I've decided to go visit my best friend in NY over Christmas/New Year, and need to start looking at airfares & accomodation etc in the next few months.
I'm pretty clueless about the geography of the city, so help finding a good area to stay in (I'll be travelling alone, moderate budget) would be mucho appreciated, as would any food/entertainment ideas.
Excited!

i really like the setup of bryant park (42nd & 6th) during Xmas time. Plus, free* ice skating.

I usually stay at the http://www.hotelbelleclaire.com/rooms.php in the upper west. Its a nice area and worth the bit of extra dough.
The best thing about Manhatten is that you dont need to know where to go. You just start walking and things find you.
I researched chocolate shops and spent a whole day walking around the city and finding plenty of unexpected things. Whatever your hobby is, look for that and other things will follow.
There are more food places in New York than you can shake a stick at. Lombardi's has great pizza and is old school. You should check it.

Spend a few hours playing GTA 4 and then you will know your way around the city no problems! Yeah!
On a serious note... do some streets in NY have steam coming out of manholes just like the movies?
