View Full Version : Why wasn't No Sleep Til Brooklyn on the Anthology

When I first got the Anthology in 1999 I had only really been listening to the Boys for about a year. I didn't really know a lot about their past and such and kind of branched off from there. Anyway, now I know that it was marketed as a "greatest hits/collection" package, but I don't understand why No Sleep Til Brooklyn was left off. It was a big enough hit to make SGH and it was definitely bigger than Slow and Low which made the cut. So does anyone know if they've ever talked about why it was left off?

You know that's a damn good question! Fight for your Right only made it because of the fact that it paved the way for them even though they look at it as a joke, so I wonder what the deal is with No Sleep Till Brooklyn. I personally love it.

It wasn't exactly a "greatest hits collection" which is why they threw Country Mike, Boomin Granny, Dub the Mic etc. I think it was a big hits + b-sides + random shit kinda thing.
So they had to draw the line somewhere I guess.

the anthology was made to show all the different eras and styles the beastie boys had over the years, but you're right, no sleep til brooklyn shoulda been on

Yeah but I mean it was such a big hit and then they put stuff like Soba Violence on there? Seriously? Just seems like it was kind of off is all. Whatever who knows why they do half the crap they do.

They could nt put everything on there! You could always put on LTI to hear No Sleep til Brooklyn!
I think they were trying at the time not to do a greatest hits package, so made it pretty varied, and No Sleep til Brooklyn was a casualty of this approach.
At the time it came out there were quite a few tracks I didnt have and the book too made it essential.

I'm not worried about hearing it I have LTI and SGH so I'm set lol. I just think it's odd because while it is a varied collection it also has all of their other hits and singles.

Have any of you read the booklet inside? The tracks on the anthology were chosen by each member and there is a story behind each choice, like the fairly humorous anecdote surrounding Soba Violence.
They probably don't rate it enough and feel the other choices from LTI explain the guys' journey more than the others.
It's definitely not a greatest hits compilation. That's Solid Gold Hits, surely?
I'm not sure why I'm replying as I haven't listened to the Beastie Boys properly for years.
"No Sleep Til Brooklyn" was NOT a huge hit. In fact, it didn't even chart in the US. I think it should have been on the ANTHOLOGY though. But they also pnly put 3 songs from one of the most classic Hip Hop albums ever, "Paul's Boutique". The "Check Your Head" era was represented the most here.

Well I guess that makes sense when you put it that way. Greatest Hits VS. Anthology. If I recall Fight For Your Right wasn't gonna make it but because of what this album was about and it's big role in who the band was and later became it had to be on there. So I get it now. :p

well, actually, um, you guys, ah... the real reason that song was not included is because there was a problem with the distribution main office for the parent company - the reps involved with the incident concerning said problem were super on the ball but the other guys were all "fuck that" so it just got left off in the end. and seriously, trust me, i know what i'm talking about, and i mean that.

I've always wondered who the hell are they talking about in general, whenever they diss.
I don't think I've ever slept in Brooklyn, let alone New York...
