It'll probably just end up being camo and I in here but whatever.

The title is a little... meh. But this album. Holy shit, what a return to form. I was looking for something to set me on fire and fuck me if this isn't doing it in a major way.

Even on the questionable tracks I'm throwing caution to the wind and just going with it.

It’s like Steph and Chino finally found a way to satisfy both of their natural musical leanings and the balance is lovely. A fitting tribute to Chi that they came back from the land of the lost and hopefully this will inspire his spirit and they'll give it their all on the tour for him.

I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL OCTOBER TO SEE THEM, IT'S HORRIFYING.

oh hi :-)

I love the album, it's fantastic and has been on rotation solidly on my ipod for the last two weeks.

My faves so far are Prince and You've Seen the Butcher (y)

I'll have to check it out. The lady is still a big fan. They lost me after White Pony, but if it is a legit return to form, I'll give it a go. I still go see them live here and there. They always seem to give a healthy dose or Adrenline and Around the Fur.

Btw, when did Chino get obese?

Holy shit, have you heard the songs from the deluxe version? Ghosts is the closest thing to Depeche Mode they've ever done (including their cover of To Have and to Hold). And in a very good way.

camo

I couldn't see a deluxe version in the shops, I didn't know there was one, so I bought the straight up one :(

hpdrifter
05-05-2010, 01:54 PM
Ah, it's a cover of some British outfit I've never heard of. Either way it sounds like Steph took the leash off and let Chino get his goth/new wave on.

Edit: I think the deluxe edition exists only on iTunes. Three songs, really good, all covers of way-out-of-left-field shit.

Please tell me this is an inside joke as this was a HUGE controversy when White Pony came out and was lame then.

It is somehow both a return to form and a step to the next level, go with it.

I am going to go out on a limb and say I think it might be better than White Pony. But I'm pretty excited right now because I just got it, so don't hold me to that. Give me a coupla days to come back down to earth.

I liked ATF better than WP (though I loved WP) and I think I might like this better than both of them.

The blend of Chino's Smiths/Cure/Depeche Mode and Steph's Slayer/Helmet musical influence is balanced the best I've ever seen them do it.

In terms of current favs I am madly, passionately in love with This Place is Death, Risk and 976-EVIL.

But it's hard to choose, this will be one of the first albums I've bought in a long time that I can't see skipping anything.
Prince and Royal feel like they could have been on ATF, gorgeous, dark, sexy, moody
CMND/CTRL - love the Adrenaline homage in the production, birthmark/nosebleed/one weak anyone?
Rocket Skates - a little bit of the self-titled
You've Seen the Butcher - fucking brilliant, where did this come from?
Beauty School and Sextape are going to polarize but I'm on board

It's like they took the best of what they've already done and made something better than the sum of its parts.

Yeah, buddy he's had that double chin for going on four albums now.

He had first gained the weight while they were making White Pony and the buzz from the fans at the time about his new look was louder than that about the actual album. Which is a shame because it was (is) a great fucking album.

People get older and he's a heavy drinker (or at least he was). He's bound to get puffy.

I still need to get this.... I love rocket skates. and unfortunately i've only heard wp and the selftitled along with the bsides one. but aahhh damn u crappy pay check and mothers day. (granted i am not pissed that i have to get presents for my mom.... i love her very much.)

Get this and Around the Fur. If you can only get one get Around the Fur first, you can probably get it used for cheap somewhere.

But definitely get Diamond Eyes as soon as humanly possible.

My burning passion for this album has not waned by much, though I have come to the conclusion that I will probably skip CMND/CTRL more often than not.

It always sort of annoyed me that they got lumped into that whole "nu metal" genre and were routinely mentioned alongside feces like Korn and Limp Bizkit.

I'll (il)legally download this and listen.

hpdrifter
05-10-2010, 12:43 PM
Yeah, me too. deftones were always in a class by themselves to me and (with the exception of Back to School) managed to keep it legit.

Anyway, tix for the tour go on sale soon. Bummer they're not headlining their own shit. I've got to pay to go see what will probably amount to half of what they would normally do in a set sandwiched between Mastadon and "Alice in Chains".

well i just did, listened to their version of ghosts. pretty faithful to the original, i was expecting some sort of rawk crescendo but it never happened, kept it pretty minimal like the japan version, singer even sounded like david sylvian.

I may listen to more but would like a good starting point please? I cant be arsed just trawling thru deftones stuff on you tube so somebody pick a tune, prefarably something with some sort of groove if thats possible

hpdrifter
05-12-2010, 03:12 PM
Well, it depends on what you're into. Their version of Ghosts is not representative of their sound. They are, for all intents and purposes, a metal band. Loud, screeching guitars, screaming vocals. Though they're the only metal band I've ever been into.

That said, the ones that really get me pumped and/or I find wildly sexy are as follows:

Adrenaline
Root
Engine No 9
Most people would also say 7 Words and Bored but I've heard them too many times.

Around the Fur (this whole album is so sexy)
Around the Fur
MX
Lotion
The two singles were Be Quiet and Drive and My Own Summer which I also love.

White Pony
Korea
Knife Prty
Street Carp
Most fans will also say Passenger and Digital Bath, some might even say Elite, though that's not one of my favorites.

hpdrifter
05-12-2010, 03:14 PM
That's a lot so.... I guess

Root was the song that hooked me so try that on for size. But it's really really old now so after that listen to a few minutes of Around the Fur and then Korea.

May not be the same for all deftones fans but those are the ones that make the hair stand up on my arm when I hear them.

well i just tried a couple and its ok. my rockin days are pretty much behind me and i can only compare to 90's stuff cos thats all i know. Be Quiet and Drive i really liked, sounded like early smashing pumpkins. i listened to some off adrenaline and it did sound a bit dated or perhaps ot was low quality sound. but the 6 tunes i just checked out definitely exceeded expectations(y)

I once put on Digital Bath while i was waiting for my friend to come back out of a cumberland farms while i was blazed out of my mind..... it was kinda life changing and i've loved them so much more than i did before hand.

^ Crazy story, dude.

I never really got into these guys at all. It's not that I think they're bad. I just don't love them or anything. Same with Tool and Faith No More, if they're considered similar.

BUT, I do own a couple of Japan albums.

i cant remember anything by them apart from ghosts and thier cover of I second that emotion. i know david sylvian went off and made loads of ambient instrumental shit and married ingrid chavez who was quite hot if memory serves.

i listened to some more deftones, its ok for that kind of thing but i couldnt get too excited about it

I'm not really in to them much. I bought their Tin Drum album on a whim. It was a 20th anniversary edition of it. It had pretty packaging. And I don't think it had aged all too well. Apart from that, I found an old copy of Quiet Life on vinyl for a buck. Again, nothing special. I'd rather devote that time to something along the lines of Can or Roxy Music if I'm going to listen to something so arty.

I too think they shouldn't have been lumped in with the nu metal stuff.

I don't know everything they've done but I did enjoy White Pony and Around the Fur. I think I had Change and Shove It on constant repeat.

I can remember the moment I got hooked as well. I was listening to Root in my car and there's a drum fill on that track that is placed so perfectly and is so right for the moment that it just drives me out of my mind every time I hear it.

LETS GET BACK ON TOPIC PEOPLE.

So, another one that may or may not be interesting to folks is their cover of Skynrd's (yes, Skynrd) Simple Man. I happen to love it.

B-sides and rarities ftw!

But I did add Japan to this list of bands that I carry around in my purse so I will remember to purchase something of theirs the next time I am in a music store.

Okay, I have recovered from my mania. I busted out Around the Fur and I take it back, it's still my favorite.

But I'd put DE on par with WP for sure and both are not far behind ATF in my heart.
