"According to exporters there is a shortage of onions in all major areas. East Europe is also coming into the market. This can only make the price rise further. "Throughout Eastern Europe there is a shortage of onions," says Dutch exporter Jaap Wiskerke. There was much less planted because people couldn't get finance due to the crisis. This means Russia has no onions left. Looking at the stocks, it can only mean that the prices will continue to rise. Onions are not available at 25 Eurocents a sack at the gate any more, it is expected that they could cost up to 50 Eurocents per sack.”
So it seems to be true...Although my onions come from California or Mexico this shortage seems to have reached this dirt bowl, land locked dive,I call home...I haven’t seen a proper white onion (http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x265/mcmoot/onion_white.jpg) in over a month now...and I’m pretty sure shallots have become the most expensive item in the produce section...between this and the jump in rice,I have some concern...
