Says it was an ATM withdrawal. Considering I made a deposit inside the bank with no ATM activity, that's disturbing.
Just in time for my rent check to bounce. This should be fun. :(

I have my card on me. The teller said it was an ATM withdrawal, so I'm waiting to talk to one of the managers or whatever. I feel like I'm gonna puke.

how would anyone get into your acct @ atm without your card? you didnt walk away from the atm in the middle of a transaction. you'll get your $ back.
There's devices that people stick on atms. Card skimmers. They copy your details as you put your card in the machine. Some even have cameras to capture your pin number. Not sure about your laws but over here its the banks fault and we get reimbursed (I believe)

Yeah, the bank will credit my account in a few days they said. I left a message for the landlord asking if he'd already deposited the check but I haven't heard back.
The thing is, I haven't used that card at an ATM in weeks. Maybe it takes them some time to process it.
Thank God I saw the withdrawal today or they might've done another $500 transaction today. The card is canceled, so hopefully the next ATM they try snaps a good clear picture.
I really don't need extra stress right now.

Too soon.
Landlord called back and my check already was banked. He says he'll work with me, but this just flatly sucks.
Turns out I did use the card at an ATM June 28, so they must've gotten it then. I'd forgotten about that.

Did it say what ATM? My account was charged with something from "LIRR", which I found out was Long Island Railroad. This has happened to quite a few people apparently. And I'm nowhere near the LIRR.

They said they couldn't tell which one.
Wha!?
But, yeah, the location doesn't appear like it usually does.

yuck! I recently rented a van and they were supposed to charge $400 and then refund $200 of it when I returned the van. Well...they didn't. and they charged another $189. I called my bank to find out why I was missing $389, and they told me it was "on hold", and due to be released on the 16th (I'd rented the van on the 12th). total bullshit!
anyway, then my bank flagged the charge and blocked my card from use, but didn't tell me. So my debit card was declined at the GD Family Dollar! and then again at the bike shop. ugh, embarrassing.
it all turned out alright, but it was a stressful few days.
Hopefully your bank can pay out your check, I've found as long as you let them know the money would normally be there, people are pretty reasonable.

fyi: the lirr doesn't show up in credit card as lirr, it shows up as mta. that is really scary that these things happen, it freaks me out. :o

Happily, the bank got right on it and credited the money within a few hours. They had said it might be a couple of days, so I was surprised to get an email about three hours later and when I checked the balance, it was there. Good job, bank! I know it's not their fault, and that helped a lot.
Banks are great. Never done a thing wrong in the history of money. Keep up the good work banks (y)

They had people skimming cards here. I got a call at work saying someone in Canada was trying to access my account. It was obviously a ne'er do well of some description and the bank suspended my account as a precaution. Had to get new cards and all that shit. Fucked.

I don't think I'll ever use an ATM again. I knew about skimming and thought I was aware enough of the telltale signs that a face had been attached, but apparently not.
In this case, my bank really came through for me. The amount was credited and my rent check went through that night. I think most banks aren't particularly helpful, but these folks did it right, and I'm really grateful. I have no idea if they have any legal obligation to even do this, and $500 is a big chunk of change.
