View Full Version : I had the option of an iphone 4 and I turned it down.
I renewed my contract today with the possibility of grabbing an iphone but in the end I decided not to.
I just think apple had annoyed me with their usual process of grossly staggering technology across their products;
iphone 1st gen had no camera or 3g capabilties when there were considered the norm in even the most basic of handsets - I mean c'mon that's a little too much to 'miss off' the checklist for my liking. I can't believe people went out to buy it. Plebs.
Also I can't see myself downloading farting apps for a quid when my very own arse is capable enough to carry out the task to a satisfying degree.
Anyways I did a little research and ended up with a blatent iphone rip off with a faster clock and a better screen and my tariff was reduced by £5 so win win in a roundabout fashion.
I got a Samsung Galaxy S (http://apnajoy.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/9ffc_samsung-galaxy-s-android-phone.jpg). Pretty gay sounding but quite easy on the eye. Oh and it runs on Android so chances are those fart apps will be free.

iphone farts dont smell....yet.
But when everyone else phone is capable of of fart smells you can safely assume that the iphone is still 3 generations away from doing the same.

You made the correct choice by thinking with your arse rather than your head.

some people prefer head over arse. oh, hang on i forgot we were talking about iphones, i'll stop the silliness before the innuendo police turn up
i do kinda hate talking about iphones tho. its all that bollocks when people start showing each other apps etc and i make a noise of despair. I call it the igroan.

well if i am honest , there is a part of me that is slightly envious. I did see a good free kick game on someones the other day that looked highly addictive but i use about 10% of the functions on my slightly less showbiz nokia 5800 so i just wouldnt use it that much and there are a few people i know who regard the iphone as too much of a status symbol and it annoys me. plus like you said mark, they are ripping everyone off constantly and still they lap it up.
I found a snes emulator for an android phone so I'm looking forward to some old school gaming (y)

in fairness, you must know there's much more to the AppStore than Farting apps.

We have a work experience kid with us at the moment. He reminds me of Harry Potters' fat cousin - spoiled rotten and egotistical. Also he's fat. He has an iPhone (bought for him at xmas along with a PS3, golf clubs, stacks of DVDs and games etc) and he won't shut up about it.
He keeps showing it off as if he's the only person in the world who owns one, despite the fact that 5 out of 6 of us in the office all have one already.
When he's shadowing people in the office we all get the same questions:
"What model is your iPhone?"
"How old is your iPhone?"
"What apps do you have on your iPhone?"
"Do you think I should ask for an iPhone 4 for my birthday?"
"How much memory does your iPhone have (seriously - does anybody other than a grossly overweight 14 year old with an iPhone fetish know the answer to this one?)
iPhones are pretty good but Apple sure do make 'em with a lot of faults. I updated my 3G to the new iOS4 and now it runs like a piece of shit... i.e. going to a blank screen every time I finish on the phone :/

my contract ran out, so i upgraded to an iphone4 and tbh i find aggressively anti-iphone people just as annoying as super iphone fans. "ooh it's popular! i'll hate it! just.. because! that'll learn 'em!"
it does what i want it to do, and it does it well. meh. that's all i'm interested in. yes, other handsets probably could do x, y and z well too. but i have this phone. who cares? why is it honourable that you turned an iphone upgrade down?

that's a nice looking phone camo (y)
It's a Capitivate though? Your link says Galaxy.
I think Samsung makes great phones, I have a Solstice and my girlfriend and most of her family have the Impression - not bad for iphone alternatives

iphones are neat, i had the opportunity recently to upgrade for $100 or some shit. decided against it because i didn't feel like paying an extra 30 bucks a month for a tiny computer in my pocket. got a samsung flight with interwebs for 10 extra bucks a month. meh, it's alright. kinda miss my old sony walkman phone. the music player interface was lovely.

I've got a Tracfone that I put $20 on a month, if that. I've also got a 2nd gen 32gb iPod Touch. I love the touch and wish the wireless worked everywhere that AT&T covers, but really... I don't use the cell that much and I have wi-fi everywhere I go.
I'd love an iPhone 4, but I'm a realist, I can get by with a pre-paid phone and an iPod..
Just give me a camera on the iTouch and I'm good to go... (I love to have a camera with me, and the Tracfone camera sucks)

isn't the stance against them just that they're overpriced toys? still they trailblazed the design and the original designer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Ive) is english, so that's quite good i guess. :p
my ipod just died, so i'm a bit sad. think i'm going to get a nano again, rather than the classic.
i'm tempted to upgrade to an iphone in jan but it seems so expensive. by then the market will be different yet again, so we'll see...

Its like militant atheists, they are as annoying if not more annoying than Christians.
Simon Pegg said something on Twitter recently about how its sad that people go on and on about products they don't use. Why not go on and on about the stuff you do like?

The new iphone gets released here in 2 weeks and im pre ordering. To be honest I'm pretty excited.
I use my iphone for loads of things, even controlling my home stereo system. I can wake up in my bedroom, and without leaving the bed turn on my hifi and play an album for me to get up to.
BTW camo there is no way the Galaxy S's screen is better than the iphone 4 one. Just sayin

yep.
I've had an iphone for a couple of years but I'll be getting rid of it soon. I liked the phone but I can't stand AT&T. I've been shopping for another phone but they all huff and puff about features that I don't think I'll need. There is very little 4G coverage in the US for instance.

As it is, for a giant nerd, its odd i've never gotten a smartphone.
And for a big Apple gaybot I never got an iPhone (probably cause I got a 1st gen iPod touch)
Anyhoo, thinking of going Android for the crazy-laugh, and thinking of getting the HTC Desire.
I probably won't though, as i'm a tight fucker.

I had the option to have the best phone out there and I turned it down. This thread is less of a standpoint against popularity, but more of look at how/why I decided otherwise even though I've been bumming apple since I was 18.
There's not much honour in it but I suppose everything has it's counter culture. I just feel a little like what Aidy is talking about. I'm sick of everyone in the studio banging on about them all day and I'd sooner be getting on with work than joining in with the waffle.
Hey Mikizee the screen is apparently bigger and brighter. But it'll all be in detriment to the battery life

I have a dumb question, since all of these apps and tech savvy items are put together in a small package such as the iphone, why doesn't a manufacturer try and upgrade the slugs we have at home?
Smaller and smarter. I have a relatively modern phone at home and it's ugly.
It makes sense that people will pay billions for this tech, why not upgrade the home phones too?
I really dig the impracticability of the Vertu (http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&q=vertu+cell+phone+prices&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=3Bo2TIj3Oof2tgPXhI20AQ&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CC4QrQQwAA) made by frank nuovu (http://www.fnuovo.com/).

I have said that i like my phone and idiots at work have said "yeah but its not one of these" and produced the iphone. twats.
i dont openly barrack people who have one and have entered into discussions about them. I am interested to know why people are into them so much but have been put off by the price and the thought that i am funding steve jobs buying chester lampwicks gold house and will have to buy another one when the next model comes out.
Or is iphone 4 pretty definitive?
But when one guy at work asked a friend of mine if he had got his iphone yet by saying "have you joined the cool people yet" well that just made me vomit. And there is a bit of that about imo. When people get carried away about apps that are just nonsense that annoys me. But as a bit of kit, they are intruiging and seem good but some peoples reactions make them seem over-rated.
I just dont use a phone enough other than texts and calls to merit one. If i want to go on t'internet etc, i just wait till i get home or when the boss isnt looking. I am more inclined to get an ipad when they are bit lighter and cheaper.

I'm out of the loop on a lot of pop culture, so I didn't know there was this whole "THERE'S AN APP FOR THAT" backlash. So anyway, I talked to
a lot of people before I settled on the iPhone -- I really didn't want to give money to Apple -- but the general advice I got from everybody
was that it was the best. Okay, cool. So I settled on that.
So I was pretty delighted to see how useful it was, even as a novelty, and I'm afraid I kind of became of of "those" people until one day
someone semi-joked about me showing off. I was literally stunned. I just thought I had this cool gadget -- I wasn't thinking of it at all as
some status thing I was throwing in anyone's face. I assumed my friends would be as happy for me having it as I was to have it. Plus, it
often was useful -- we'd be in a discussion and get stuck on something and I'd say, "Well, we can just look it up!" and hop online.
So maybe I was socially naive because I didn't know there was some stupid "iPhone culture," but I'm slower to the draw these days.

I'm pretty sure when i upgrade next i'll have the chance to get one, and were it not for the free music contract i'm on i would get one out of curiosity. I've never owned any apple products so i don't know what i'm missing. But now i'm used to being able to download pretty much everything i want for nothing(providing i've got a nokia) i can't go back to not being able to do that!
My son is saving his pocket money for an iphone, i did just up it a bit but it's still gonne take hima a while!
