The best book by far is the 33 1/3 series on the Paul's Boutique era. Great detail and backstories.

That 33/1/3 book is good on PB. I have a few more but cant remember the titles off hand, but there is a ton out there. Too lazy to google right now.

the one by Angus Batey is solid, I forget the title (Rhymin and Stealin?)

and I always enjoyed The Beastie Boys Companion(?), it's like their history told through a series of chronological articles and album reviews.
