So, some random crap happened with my job recently which may result in me leaving. This isn't definite yet, but I've had a problem gaining the relevant security clearances needed, and without them, I'll be sent back to my old unit. This is not an option for me, so I'll leave the Army.
Now, the question is, what shall I do? I've had some ideas, but to be honest, I'm not really educated at all and have little transferable skills from my time in the Army. I do have good savings so maybe this could help me if I leave.
What do?
any interest in going back to school? does the UK have a GI bill type thing where they'll pay for university? couldn't hurt. just don't go to law school or barrister school or whatever you call it, it's a bad choice

I don't believe we have that, if you've served a certain time you are entitled a resettlement courses, most guys go for stuff in construction, working on rigs, driving and all that crap I could never picture myself doing.
Even though I have the money to pay to for my education, I've been out of real education for many years now and I have no idea what I would want a degree in!

Midwife. There's a shortage.
Is that the wife between number 1 and number 3?
It's hard to find rewarding work without some degree to show you're competent. I say take a little time to figure out what you really want to do, then go for some related education. The degree ought to at least to get your foot in the door somewhere - and at that point you can start to really learn the job you want to do.
Nursing? Seriously!
From that about midwives, the reason there is a shortage as they treat the new recruits like shit so they re-train to a different part of the health service, working with them sometimes I know this. And because I often see student nurses about I can tell you that the majority of these are hot females and know how to party. Nursing is transferable all over the world. And you get educated and a bursary to spend on booze.
Part of me has thought about nursing actually.
Depending which end you go for, you could end up cleaning up sick, poo and pee...
...after a night out if you invite any of them back to yours.

The fact that you have been in the army, learnt various skills, been under pressure, used your head, got organisation skills and probably lots of other qualities i cant think of. Thats all going to stand you in good stead isnt it. In any line of work. Go for stuff you want to go for, doing well in the army impresses a lot of people who havent.

Firstly, you're leaving at the end of your contract, right? I'm sure you know if you leave before your contract is up and get other than honorable, your chances of finding a good job would be very hard.
Were you infantry? Oh, a tanker if I remember. Try doing some security work. It's pretty easy to find a decent security job with your type of background. I'm not talking lazy underpaid security but try getting onto a government type job.

I'd completed my minimum service so it wouldn't be a problem with me leaving, but I went for a job transfer into Intelligence. Passed the course and was just waiting for my new unit but got held up waiting for the clearance required for the job. Luckily, I think it has come through and all is going to be good, but it was possible that my options were going to run out and I would have left the military.
I was just thinking worst case scenario.

get a job working for the federal goverment or local goverment. Even if you dont make that much the benefits make it worth it. People I work with that earn six figures as an independent contactor dont do as well as goverment employs who make $40K a year after you consider what the non goverment person pays for insurance and the additional medical bills that follow by crapie insurance.

tea lady.
I would have liked to spend a few years in the army maybe. Too late now. Three years at university, two years bumming around, one year training to be a teacher. Start my first job in a month. I might have been more intimidating if I had armed forces experience... and an awesome uniform to wear to formal occasions.
