View Full Version : What's wrong with wristwatches?

In the latest version of the Beloit College Mindset List (http://www.beloit.edu/mindset/2014.php), there's this line:
......and with cell phones to tell them the time, there is no need for a wrist watch
Really? For me having to pull out my phone and either turn it just the right way to see the time on the outer screen's display or having to flip it open to see the time is a hassle. A watch? Lift arm slightly and roll eyeballs downwards. Done!
And in the interest of full disclosure, I don't collect them but I have always been interested in clocks, watches and anything else to do with measuring time.
Anyone here not own a watch because they use only use the one on their cellphone?
BTW: for other safety nerds :) while wireless (home) phones have pretty much taken over - something else alluded to in that survey - personally I make sure to have at least one wired phone in the house in case the power goes out, and also because cellphones or rather cellphone service has lately not always been 100% reliable during certain natural disasters.
My wired phone of choice? It was designed in the 1960s  but bought new just a couple years ago, the Trimline (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trimline_telephone), which is of the so-called mid-century modern school of design. Cost me a whole ten bucks - things that aren't "cool" don't cost much these days - and like the original, even includes a groovy lighted dial. And because its earpiece is made to fit around your ear, it sounds much better than the sleek looking but ergonomically-crappy designs that have pretty much taken over in wireless land, plus the phone's shape makes it much easier to hold between shoulder and head if you're cutting a pizza or typing out a forum message. :)
I stopped wearing a watch in 1991. And I usually don't bring my cell phone with me when go somewhere.

i tried wearing a wrist watch for a few months at one point in life. but it was just never something i could get used to. i was always fidgeting with it and taking it off most chances i had anyway.
as far as a landline phone, i haven't had one since i got a cell phone. i hardly use my cell, so i'd never use a land line.
oh, and:
personally I make sure to have at least one wired phone in the house in case the power goes out
that doesn't make sense

I stopped wearing a watch in my early twenties after I'd lost maybe the third nice one I'd gotten. I'm not someone who loses stuff like that,
but nice pens and nice watches for some reason, I could never keep.

I used to wear a watch all the time and felt naked without one. A couple years back the battery died and I never got it replaced...but I have been on the lookout for another watch as I've missed it so.
I have a land line as well...but only because Comcast had a deal with cable, internet and phone.

that doesn't make sense
When there's a power outage, a wireless phone won't work because the base unit's tranceiver (transmitter/receiver) circuitry won't work. Hence, no calls to the power company.......or anyone else. :(

I never went back to a watch after my watch aided in breaking my wrist, I just never bothered.
It shattered the crystal as well, massive SMASH!

I always wear a watch. Soldiers always wear watches.I'm not a soldier, but I am also outside a lot :) and my next watch will be this Casio G-Shock (http://www.klockit.com/products/dept-78__sku-87203.html) with solar power and "atomic clock" automatic time/date setting system.
Btw speaking of atomic clocks, here's where people can get the EXACT time, as measured by an actual atomic clock: www.time.gov. For those outside the U.S., click on the "UTC" option, which is basically Greenwich Mean Time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenwich_Mean_Time).
I think that, as a man, a wristwatch is the closest one can come to wearing jewellery.

Wearing one does make you look like a man always on the move.

It's a statement to wear a watch also, I don't quite mean in the 'look at me I have an expensive watch' way, but if you're wearing a suit or similar smart attire, a watch is part of the look.

Amen brother. I'm not allowed to even pull my phone out while working so I have to have a watch on. One thing I hate though are people who don't have either a cellphone or a watch and they ask me what time it is. I don't get it. I'm not Big Fucking Ben.

me.
I could never get around wearing a watch. Like Jabumbo, I find myself taking every opportunity to take it off.
Problems with watches:
-can't go swimming
-gets caught on backpack strap
-let's people know I care what time it is
-can't play sports
-hand gets caught awkwardly in pockets
I think really, the ultimate reason is just a stupid rebellious (read: irresponsible) streak that tells me to ignore what time of day it is, live in the moment, whatever bullshit.
