How do cords and cables get so tangled?

Seriously. I can underdstand a little accidental tangle, but there are times when it's almost as if surgery is required to straighten things out. Do little tangle gremlins operate at night? It's nuts.

I know exactly what you mean and I fucking hate it. I plug one thing in, then I plug another thing in. I go to unplug one and the cords are fused together. FUCK!

I work in I.T. and my life pretty much revolves around cables, running cable, patching cat5 in the server room, moving people's computers, running more cat5 cable 45' in the air on a scissor lift, un-plugging, re-plugging, wire tying, cutting wire ties, putting ends on cat5, etc etc etc.... It's a f-ing nightmare.

Cables of any sort are knotted up by Gremlins(tm) I'm positive. I work with a guy who instead of using the little plastic coated wire ties, looooves zip ties. Don't get me wrong zip-ties have their place. But it sucks to have to cut them of with only a Leatherman while laying on my back under someone's desk.

I hate cables/cords ...

I have a ton of cords. Monster cords, mass adapters, plugs, HDMI's, optical cables, xbox gaming system crap, computer gunk, accessories and chargers. The problem that compounds all of this is the bulk of it is behind TV's & sound systems that have surround sound speakers to boot....

So they get dusty and tucked around crevices etc... at my old place I used alot of cord hiding devices and gimmicks but I'm now overwhelmed by the sheer volume since this year I've added an electric guitar, amp & assorted bs that makes the guitar sound fuzzy

Here is what i see in my peripheral as i kepboard this post,

phone cord
2 headphone cables
3 USB cables plugged into computer screen
3 way phone jack
belkin wireless box with;
printer usb
computer ethernet
external drives (3) usb's
all associated plugs
2 cable co-axials
rca car cigarette adapter
archos propriety adapter
archos propriety charger & USB
speaker wires & amp plug
about a half dozen wires to & fro from my ASUS desktop
a charger for laptop + extra speaker usb for same.
wireless router has ethernet cable, usb & outlet wire

35 wires all within 2 feet of my eyes. they're pretty much all untangled though.
