a helpful guide (http://www.theatlanticwire.com/features/view/feature/Tea-Partiers-Warning-Filled-Guide-to-DC-1892) to people planning to attend

* Warning: Caribou Coffee wifi "restricts your access to 'adult' sites."

* "Dupont Circle, gay area"

* At the West End Bistro, "Nancy Pelosi, Alan Greenspan, Andrea Mitchell, Clint Eastwood, and other notables, good and evil, local and visiting, may be spotted."

* On scary African people: "DC's population includes refugees from every country, as the families of embassy staffs of third world countries tend to stay in DC whenever a revolution in their homeland means that anyone in their family would be in danger if they went back. Most taxi drivers and many waiters/waitresses (especially in local coffee shops like the Bread and Chocolate chain) are immigrants, frequently from east Africa or Arab countries. As a rule, African immigrants do not like for you to assume they are African Americans and especially do not like for you to guess they are from a neighboring country (e.g. Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia) with whom they may have political or military tensions."

* On the metro: "Do not use the Green line or the Yellow line." [Editor's note: About half of the Atlantic Wire staff lives safely on the Green and Yellow line. Of course, we are all armed to the teeth. And Eritrean.]

* The eight blocks that are safe: "If on foot or in a cab or bus"--Segway riders, it seems, can safely skip this note--stay "in DC only in northwest DC west ... of 14th or 16th streets, or if on Capitol Hill only in SE Capitol Hill (zip 20003) between 1st and 8th Streets, not farther out than 8th."

* Where you can go: Pelosi's house, to protest. The guide concludes by listing the home addresses of Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Anita Dunn, and Tom Daschle. "Feel free to protest!"

also, be safe! (http://www.theatlanticwire.com/images/static/043328_Map2.jpg)

but, but...

but I thought the conservatives told us liberals not to pay attention to the talking-heads?

anyways, I'm paying attention because this is quite interesting.

1) Beck said he didn't know this rally was on the MLK I have a Dream Anniversary - but yet there is more than enough MLK praise going on.

2) The crowd is overwhelmingly white and more than likely has a fair share of people who would have quickly held up signs saying "Obama bin Laden" or "Facist" just a year ago

3) This is so transparent - as much as beck wants to pretend that he is sensitive to the plight of minorities, the poor, immigrants - he'll go back to his hate spewing on his tv/radio shows within a week.

4) Is this a lesson in civics, a "freak show", or attempt to expose the crowd to people of different colors, creeds, and cultures? All of Beck's guests have been of another ethnicity, as if to say "HEY! we're diverse too!" - this feels exceptionally contrived.

5) Beck's best bet with this - To win back advertisers

For "500,000" people this is quite a quiet crowd

Paid for and Flushed down your throat by FOX (and Sharia law)

i've been doing this too much lately but i just have to post it because the daily show nailed it (http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-august-26-2010/i-have-a-scheme)

beck's whole "we have to take the civil rights movement back" thing alternatingly baffles and troubles me. take it back? from who? and who's taking it back? did someone take it away? does beck want to take it away? what does he think the "civil rights movement" is exactly?

windbag, a goddamn windbag

p.s.

What Martin Luther King Jr. did was exceptionally Brave.

What beck is doing is just plain bullshit.

Martin Luther King Jr. was willing and did die for his cause.

if beck is wearing a bullet proof vest, then we know where he stands.

oh

and also

All the right-wing wack-job televangelists are in jail, Someone has to do their job!

I'm hoping this message is directed towards his followers to park it. If there is a silver lining in this message - it is for them to restore honor by stop acting like assholes, racists, and nazis.

2) The crowd is overwhelmingly white

Ummm.....America is overwhelmingly white bro. I bet Sharpton's rally is overwhelmingly black...oh nooooo.

Why is this an issue for you? You're such a race baiter.

I am curious as to why I did not see much video or photos of people of ethnicity in the crowd.

dude, in no way shape or form am I trying to defend beck or his supporters. By the same token I am not scared of them nor do I feel the need to attack them. I think I have good grasp of what they represent and I am no more threatened by them than I am by the AARP or Al Gore. It just seems that whenever you get more than four white people together without any minorities present people like you assume they must be planning to oppress or lynch someone of a different skin color. Like white people are incapable of NOT being racist unless someone is there to keeps tabs on them. Very petty. Yet groups who are blatantly exclusive of whites, and blatantly discuss methods of advancing their own races are A-OK with you. ( NAACP, Congressional Black Caucus, Congressional Hispanic Caucus, MIllion Man March, etc etc). Get over it. Beck supporters are white. Sharpton supporters are black. Man activists appeal to certain racial demographics. So What?

Any time you see 4 white people in DC you know something is up, like a Phil Collins concert or something.

There's only one area of DC I wouldn't want to go to, and that's only the southern HALF of the green line, in southeast. There's lots of violent crime there and it's pretty much a shithole that needs to be cleaned up. Even then, I've still gone to Nationals Park, which is located in the crap area, and I'm still not dead. It's funny that they warned against the yellow line (which starts where hipsters live in NE --the green line also parallels this area -- and ends in Yuppietown, Alexandria), I guess it's too close to the scaaaary green line. What a bunch of tools.

maybe they just wanted to be safe rather than sorry given that some of the attendees might have been dressed poorly (http://imgur.com/rEGh3.jpg)

I've seen a lot of shows in Southeast DC and I've never been murdered or raped or even mugged, or raped there. I have paid "parking attendants" money to "watch" my car (i.e. I paid mufuckas so they wouldn't bust into my shit as soon as I went into the Capital Ballroom to see a show.) This never resulted in murder or rape though.

You know, I thought this thread was going to be about Beck Hanson. I want my life back.

I wonder if the Becksters are wary of hanging out at the Eighteenth Street Lounge, the club operated by one of my fave chillout artists (http://eslmusic.com/)? :) (don't know what part of town the club is located in though).

There is a big difference between telling and urging people to attended sharptons rally, and inviting them to see thier boss (sec. Duncan) speak.

Whoever wrote that misleading line should stick thier overpaid face into a deli slicer.
