Someone who has never listened to the Beastie Boys asks you to give him the name of 5 songs that they can listen to so they can hear for himself what the fuss has been about the past 25 years or so.
What 5 songs would you recommend?
I will go for
She's Crafty
High plains drifter
The sound of science
Sure Shot
Intergalactic
Just for a bit of fun, what 5 songs would you choose?

Man that is hard!!!! Just five? Okay well here are my picks but I know I might look later and want to change it lol...
High Plains Drifter
Jimmy James
Intergalactic
Sabotage
Bodhavista vow
I choose these based on the fact that I would be giving the listener a listen to various sounds the BB's can play with from punk, dance, international, spiritual and old school. I think the musical arrangements in all of these songs are pretty amazing and I can't see anybody listening to these songs and not wanting to know more about the Beasties! (y)

If I had to choose 5 songs that were going to be a representation of their sound, diversity, and growth they would be:
Root Down - Great track, great sample and tons of references to the hip-hop history and funk bands that have inspired them.
Off The Grid - A two for one. Shows of their rocking and instrumental side.
Time For Living - A song that shows off their punk side and a tribute to Sly Stone, Lee Perry and Frontline.
Song For the Man - A song that doesn’t sound like anything else they have done before. Reminds me of the Beatles and grows on me every year.
Shadrach - I think this represents who they were around the LTI-PB era. It’s shows off their classic switch off technique and has great rhymes.

What's more critical, introducing someone to each era or all of their different styles?
I am going with a combo of both:
Posse In Effect
Car Thief
Time For Livin'
Ricky's Theme
Open Letter to NYC
Boo Yaa! There it is.

I would say styles, I based mine off of that without thinking of what era they came from. Man Car Thief was on my original list. It's brilliant!!! It really is hard just choosing five.

Hi guys; I'm pretty new here. This seemed like a good starting point-HARD AS HELL, lol but here goes:
I Don't Know
Bodhavista Vow
Pass the Mic
Sabotage
Gratitude
It was so hard to choose just five but the reason I picked these are; well 1st off MCA is my favorite. And I just love the way he sings I Don't Know. I find this one to be a very thought provoking song that speaks of humility & how small we are to everything around us. Some people may know OF Beastie Boys but never actually heard them-or may have only heard Fight For Your Right To Party & this song invites them to see there's so much more depth to them. I also love how Bodhavista Vow speaks so of humility & striving for personal betterment of oneself & understanding. Pass The Mic; what can I say? I just love the flow & the guys each put their own signature out there as I often see in different ways through all their music but this one in particular feels so easy for anyone to plug in and feel the flowing message. Sabotage is just so good "I can't stand it" from MCA's bass to AdRock's passionate screams & Mike D nailin' those drums! And Gratitude? AdRock in front is so great on this song & MCA bringing us into it with his bass is sheer perfection. Flawless. I feel these songs show depth & a wide range of instrumental vocal talents which makes them TRUE all-around musical artists. Sorry a bit long winded guys. ;)
