View Full Version : This Is England 86
Just watched the first episode, anyone else catch it?
I loved the film so was interested in the TV series and it does remind me of the Yorkshire in some ways when I was a kid. Well I was 6 in 86 but I mean with the old county buses, the accents, the grim oop north(ness)
tee hee...
I might watch the film again now.
I will watch it in a couple of hours. (very slow download)

just been discussing in film thread. i watched the film on monday and watched the first of the series last night. Both brilliant.
I'm uploading to hotfile now - if anyone is interested and having trouble getting the download, pm me.
Oh, I don't often visit the film thread GI.
I originally watched the film cus of the clash song "This is england, this knife is sheffield steel" but realised nothing about clash but loved it all the same.

I really liked the show.
Bit slow to begin, but i think it was setting the scene.
Damn, that was great! And Chanel Cresswell looks even better than in the movie.

Oh yeah, I'd make them more than a cup of tea.

It was filmed in Gleadless apparently.
I love the film and had high hopes for the series, it didn't disappoint. The bit on the motorbikes when they were trying to turn round was so funny.
Yes! I thought I recognised it which is why i decided to go and look online where it was filmed and it said grimsby. But I've had it confirmed since. Its like half a mile from where I live

even though i thought it was good, the series is going to have to do something special to top the films immortal line in the middle of a tense scene where they all turn up for smells birthday. "Gotta go now and watch that thing about aardvarks!"
2nd episode was also great, except for Nena in English. That will always sound wrong to me.

its good, but they are doing a bit too much of the slapstick comedy.
Meadow's takes over directing for the last 2 episodes, I wonder if it will get darker.

deffo, combos not come back yet and a few things happened at end that are pointing towards darker times
Watching ep 2 now.
It's so cool seeing where I used to mess about as a kid filmed as a time set when I used hang out as a kid.

loving this, more than the film i think. liking Woody seeing how far he can lunge in tights. Spent loads of time in Grimsby growing up, loads of family there...always felt a wee bit grim...faded Wonderland and all that. Went back with a friend to visit when i was 16 and got pissed with the skinheads in town, was really struck by how miserable and in a rut they felt. Great that this shows it doesn't take much to make people happy
Loving it to. I should point out, that although its filmed where I grew up, I was raised on the posher estate further south so I'm more middle than working class thus why I can be a total snob now (y). But like I say, half a mile if that.
You do forget how grim is was back then. I mean, it was the norm that my parents was in and out of work all the time, I still remember getting our first colour TV and it being taken away because my parents couldn't afford the payments. Handed down clothes was the norm, but I think we was happy :)
Dance, drink and screw, because there is nothing else to doooooooowoooooooo...
Yay, I'm still liking it.
I don't think everything will be solved in the last episode.

My thoughts too.
Combo was left way too late to be re introduced :-(

not sure. i think he has only come back cos he was the only one who knew about lol's dad. she mentioned something in first or second episode.
I think there will be a few things left but it should be action packed hour though. its been brilliant. the scene with lols dad and the girl was one of the most intense and disturbing things i have ever seen. and the geezer in the blue shell suit is piss funny

Yeah, I totally watched that at the wrong time. I was bored and feeling sorry for myself and wanted something to watch, I remembered I had an episode to catch up on and boy I wasn't ready for that - emotions and shit, glad they only come once in a blue moon for men.
I then watched QI and it made things better (y)
I think it ended pretty well. I had a discussion with my mate during episode one about how I think they will play out combo's part and I was pretty much spot on (y)

I've just got hold of the film, i think i missed loads of it judging by some of the things in this series. I do think it ended well but it did feel a bit rushed, like 4 parts just wasn't enough. I wanted more anyway, and despite hating any violence i was so totally cheering on Lol for getting hold of that hammer, Shane Meadows certainly doesn't hold back.

it was pretty intense. i had to have half an hours quiet reflection time (and a spliff) to deal with it all. Got myself thinking about some loose notion that combo coming back to see his mum and thus being involved was all the "the hand of god".
the only issue i have is a picky one. timeline.
England v poland was when lol's dad raped trev.
it then appeared to be next day in TIE, and they were playing against argentina in the QF when in reality there was about a week and a game against paraguay in between.
but apart from that its the best thing i have seen on tv since Lost.
Just watched it now so been avoiding this thread today.
Ending was good. The timeline was right (because the even gave the dates), but like gbsuey said, they rushed the end - to end it probably. You could fit another series into week that was missing. Combo wouldn't of been tried and charged within a week tho.
I really enjoyed it, was a good story and that is all you need in any entertainment but what is missing out of a lot of it.
But powerful stuff.

what week that was missing? and when did they give the dates, i missed that. It looked like trev was up all night waiting to speak to Lol and that milky and woody had had a messy night together after the Poland game.
As for combo, the way i saw it was this - he was in prison or perhaps parole, he buggered off to try and see his mum, he went round to lol's and then when the police came round he fessed up to the lot to protect Lol and they just slung him back in and increased his sentence. not sure if thats possible legally but it seems plausible to me

I thought it ended brilliantly. The first and last episodes were really strong.
Middle two were OK
Some of it was some of the heaviest / depressing / hard-hitting shit i have ever seen.
The final scenes did look as though they were happening the next day, but it also could have been a while later.
The Combo prison scenes weren't necessarily there and then, just showing what happened to him.
Over all I liked it, but I had two issues.
The comedy stuff was a bit put on at times.
And Combo's return seemed really rushed. His redemption and all was a fine plotline but he just 'showed up' and fulfilled his part of the story. It would have been better if we'd seen him through out (in small bits, or in the periphery)
Gave the dates when covering the Poland match and Argentine match.
So the week between that.
edit: 11th June and 22nd June 1986 the matches was on

It totally seemed as if she'd been up all night waiting to talk to Lol, and as for showing Compo back inside, i don't think that was meant to coincide with the timeline of the episode, just tying up what happened to him, that he did say he killed Lols' dad. I watched the film last night, actually hadn't really missed any but found it almost harder to watch than the series. Woody has to be one of my favourite fictional characters ever.(y)
That was the best 4 part series of the year.
I hope they do one for Italia 90 :)
