View Full Version : Any other brands as good (and comfortable) as Doc Martens?

I've never owned their shoes but love the way they feel, but cannot afford their $120 price tag. So I'm getting tired, and running low on gas, of trying to find anohter brand of boots that are similar to Doc Martens - something along these lines (http://www.drmartens.com/ProductDetail.asp?PID=13141201) (the dark brown version) - and was wondering if anyone had any advice on this?

FYI: at most, I can afford up to $80.

Thanks!!

Wait another 2 months, save up the 40 bucks, and get the docs.

I traded in my 2 pairs of 3 eyes (actually I think I donated them to the local humane society thrift store - shit, the ultra hip consignment store wouldn't even take them) for a pair of exceptionally comfy and cheap Deer Stags and my well overused 6 eye industrials for a pair of Columbias

I can honestly say my cheap dress shoes and Columbias are far more comfortable and I have absolutely no interest in buying Doc Martens again.

this is correct. The $40 is well worth the durability of the doc's. you can have them for years. When I buy them, I typically purchase 2 pairs that are the same, or close to it and alternate them. they last much longer this way.

Thanks everybody.

Yea I know shoes can be really personal items and have found out the hard way that really cheap shoes really suck and can be *physically* painful. :(

Sort of offtopic here but I would have liked to own these Pumas (http://www.shop.puma.com/Speed-Cat-SD-Shoes/pna884376234654,en_US,pd.html?cgid=23110) but damn they're so narrow I could barely get my foot in there! :(

Dude, srsly... DON'T buy those Docs. They're quite possibly the ugliest boots in their collection.

i absolutely love my georgia boot (http://www.georgiaboot.com/) work boots.

not sure what sort of non-work related shoes they have, but i imagine they are just as comfortable

just go to a store that sells them, they'll often have a pair or 2 on sale. that's how i kept myself in docs in high school at least. they were around 120 then, also. i got some copper ones that were on sale for 60 because the color wasn't popular, but i thought they were pretty awesome and they always got compliments when i wore them (bear in mind, this was in the mid-90's).

go to a department store that carries them, see what kind of in-store you can get.

Those look good. I have a couple of pairs of these Wolverines (http://www.shoesontheweb.com/store/product.asp?Itemnumber=M01195), one for work and the other for just a good winter boot. They stay super warm and dry while being awesomely comfortable. I beat them up real good at work and the first thing to go are the shoelace metal grommets, even after the grommet gets ripped off the punched hole in the leather holds out basically longer than the sole of the boot which so far has never worn out. I finally bought a new pair after 4 years because of ugly factor.

They sport nicely with the jeans.

i have had doc boots, shoes and sandles...

A pair of boots that come to mind is a pair of Red Wings ... 1 105D 107 is stampes on the back of these.

I have had these for 14 years. I wear thim in mud and snow. If I polish them and wear slacks I always get complimints. dressy also western/casual.....

I still have them and love them. Not good for golf.

Dude, srsly... DON'T buy those Docs. They're quite possibly the ugliest boots in their collection.Actually those aren't the ones I *really* want - the ones I want share nearly the same name but have more detail to them and are a darkish brown color rather than what's pictured in my link........except when I clicked on my bookmark for the ones I want the page no longer exists. :(

yeahwho: I bought these Wolverines (http://www.wolverine.com/US/en-US/Product.mvc.aspx/G-W-C-H/9018M/0/Work/Categories/Heavy-Industrial/Mens/Exert-Wolverine-DuraShocks-Lace-To-Toe-6-inch-Opanka-Boot) a year ago and they're built really well and look nice with shorts & a t-shirt but also with a pair of Dockers while looking for/interviewing for more casual jobs, but they aren't kidding when they say it's a WORK boot - it has broken-in some, but still can't wear them more than an hour before my feet start to ache (they are shaped well but are quite stiff). I guess I thought they would be less of work model since they looked so "upscale" vs. a normal work boot. Btw I didn't pay the MSRP listed there and right now I couldn't even pay what payed back then - damn this worst-recession-since-the-30s!!

Dorothy: yea I've been all over the place (and Houston is spread waaaaaaay out, much more so than cities say in the Northwest I've visited so this can be a major trip) and am hoping now because school is starting up, they might lower the prices.

jubumbo: Thanks, I'll see if anyone sells those around here. Maybe they have a sale going on. I don't mean to sound like a cheapskate & know 99% of the time you get what you pay for when it comes to shoes, but I bought a pair of work boots from Sears back in the early 90s for a summer lumberyard job that cost less than $50 and they turned out to be one of the most comfortable of pairs shoes I ever owned, not boot-wise, but just foot wear *period* (and kinda looked like a hiking/work boot hybrid, dark chocolate brown suede & just looked badazz overall).

abbot: Red Wings? Oh wow, the Rolls-Royce of boots. :) Not sure if I could swing those right now.......

I don't like the DuraShocks® sole either. The insulated waterproof suede's (http://www.shoesontheweb.com/store/product.asp?Itemnumber=M01195) are completely different in fit and arch, like a hush puppy shoe, extremely light and comfy. As you can see from the pic it is a different sole altogether. Like a pair of New Balances with a nice spongy bouncy feel even on the harshest surfaces, like ladders and metal deck plates.

I used to be Timberland Boots only until I tried these.

I've got about 8 pairs of Docs, Been wearing them since 87 or so, have gone years wearing the same pair every day, they f-ing wear like iron. I haven't bought a pair since Guess Jeans bought them and they started making them in China.

Do any of you who have a China pair and an original pair, have any input on quality differences since the move to China? I've looked them over in the shops, but the only difference I can tell by eye, is they no longer say "Made In England", of course.

i found that my wolverine's didn't break in very well either. i wore them for work daily for a good year before they were to a good comfort level, and even then my feet were usually throbbing if i had to pull a shift over 8 hours.

if you go to a good and proper shop that sells heavy work apparel and boots, they usually have a good selection of the previous years models on sale. i got mine for 30-40% off. if they don't have any, ask them when the new series will be out and plan for it then.

some of these are actually really cool. i like the no lace style. in the winter boots are the worst, tying and untying really crimp my style.

however they are all like $180. it didn't look like it was americans dollars tho, and i dont really know the conversion so maybe its not as bad.

I got my last pair for about $150 after tax but on sale here: http://www.gravitypope.com/shoes/mens

Worth every penny, when they break in (which takes about a only a day!) they're amazing...with a little care, cleaning and protection you can get 2 years out them and they tend to look better the more worn they become...(y)

Nice for both catch’n it...so to speak...the first time I saw the campaign promo I thought it was one of their freakin parody bits...;)

Although D.W...the first 2 years of the mag were very exciting/encouraging...then it became a victim of it’s own success in a lot of ways...currently it serves mostly to espouse a really bias anti-Israeli slant and a absolutely repetitive narrative...no real measures of tangible success or progress...yep...the only interesting aspect is that they publish reader criticism unabashedly...issues that are heavy on photography and some prose like stuff are all right as well...

I was always surprised - in a good way - that Docs were made in England and realized that's partly why they were priced the way they were. But then about three years ago I was checking them out and noticed the made in China tag........but the friggin' price was still the same.

Yeah, I noticed the same thing, like $90 for three hole docs coming from the original factory is one thing, $90 coming from China where the 12 year old girls making them get like 75cents a day seems a little off. I really doubt I'll buy another pair.

It's really hard to find anything actually made where it started out being made. My clothes pretty much.... Levis' (China), Converse/Chucks (China), T-shirts (Guatemala), Docs (China) Dickies!! Still made in the USA!! (Probably with foreign fabric, who knows)

Need a non-relative/non-close-friend opinion on these :):

"Reed", chocolate brown (http://www.dmusastore.com/p-3189-reed.aspx)

Are they O.K. for casual use with say a Ralph Wiggum/band/college sports team t-shirt and baggy cargo shorts (I wear this pretty much 90% of the time), or are they more appropriate worn with a nice pair of jeans and a polo-style shirt?

also, cargo shorts? really? still? :confused:When did they go out of style? The Dickies outlet store I shopped at (it closed a few months ago :() had lots of them & I was just at Kohls a couple days ago and they have several racks of them too.

Please don't tell me those corduroy 80s-era Ocean Pacific shorty-shorts are coming back in style.
