At the risk of upsetting the residents here and not starting a hate topic in these forums, I just want to say that I am happy Ed Miliband has become leader of the Labour Party.

The UK needs a proper left-leaning leader of a major party.

Probably still never vote for them though but y'know, a little bit of faith has returned that some influence on Climate Change is now actually real if he can become prime minister in 5 years.

I would guess that if he is not PM in 2/3 years he never will be. I assume Labour is hoping to break up the current coalition in that sort of time frame and force a new general election, if EM cannot force a GE on that time table and win I doubt he will last 5 years.

In my lifetime, I cant think of too many individuals who have held the position of leader of the opposition for a long time without either winning the big job or getting the boot.

Kinnock?

Good point really. I thought they'd of been an election within a few months of the last, some epic falling out but I was wrong.

When I wrote 5 years it made me realise that was a long time although Blair as PM seem to fly by and that lasted forever! Apart from him aging 30 years.

I mainly want a left wing major opposition. Lib Dems used to be that but no longer. I doubt you could find anyone north of Watford that think the ConDem coalition to be a good idea anymore.

I really wish EM the best of luck. Although read this morning it sounds like its going to be more of the same middle ground. There is still plenty of union-minded type of people out there. The workers who given the proper spark can cause some policy shift. I admire the french so much for this mentality. They know which side they are on and will defend it.

It'll take a good few years for me to even consider voting for Labour again. I need assurances that the last of the war criminals have left the benches before I even conisder it. To me, although Ed didn't personally vote in favour of the war in Iraq, he's still part of the 'new labour' brigade blooded by Blair and co, and I'd be very wary of trusting him.

I had to laugh at ITV news the other day though, when the presenter was talking to a 'politics expert' and said (with genuine concern) "There are concerns that Ed Milliband may actually take the Labour Party back to the left. Is this true?". A left leaning Labour Party? Oh dear - that'll have made a few thousand Daily Mail-reading viewers spit out their cornflakes in disgust (y)

not sure if any of the party leaders would have not gone to war despite what any of them say now. but i guess we will never know that. its going to take a good few years of consideration for me to actually vote for anyone again. shower of shite the lot of them. i'm sick of these "dynamic ,young" leaders. to me, it seems they are only out for themselves and keeping their profile clean at the expense of others.
