I got into the beastie boys may 1987 lti era,I was wondering if any fans on these boards actually got into the beastie boys in the paul's boutique era 1989/1990.
I know everyone loves that album now,but I wonder if they got any new fans at that time?

I got a dubbed copy of Paul's in 1990, because I was a big fan of Loced after Dark.

i got LTI when that came out and hammered it for a few months but i missed out on PB due to going down indie music street for a few years and only got into them when i worked in a record shop, it was a new shop so we had to spend a week filling the shelves up and the boss kept putting on CYH and i was hooked. I had just seen them at reading 92 as well

Snagged a cassette copy of Licensed To Ill in a Neil Diamond jewel case out of a junk car in my family's junk yard when I was 7 (1991).
Gave it to my dad cuz I thought he loved Neil Diamond.
He put it in and I think Posse in Effect came on.
He said "this isn't Neil Diamond...i don't know WHAT this is. You can have it.
So I popped it in, and have been a die hard Beastie Boys fan ever since. (I'm 25)

For me it was LTI when I first discovered them but it wasn't till Ill Communication album that I became a die hard fan. Would have been great to have discovered them during Paul's Boutique because that is first such an amazing album and second its my favorite "look" of the band especially Yauch! :o

I got into them when LTI came out. I was 19 at the time, prime age for getting into them lol. I remember wearing a DEF JAM t-shirt all the time and going to see them along with RUN DMC. I can also remember buying She's on it on 7in wax and Cookie Puss which was only aviable on 12 inch at the time ( still think it was only done as 12in ). Like alot of fans a the time PB did nothing for me, I was wanting and expecting LTI part2.
It was only when IC came out that I got back into them, then I matured and backtracked to CHY and PB in time became a true classic, way ahead of it's time.

this story blew my mind, that is a magnificent way to be introduced to a band. Its like they found you . Many forces conspired to get you that cassette. the fact that it was in a neil diamond case seems like the difference in getting you to hear it. Wonder if you'd have been as interested had it been an LTI case?

I got into the Beasties in '86 during my senior year in high school.
When PB came out there was initially a lot of hype with them doing some MTV stuff, but I think the only folks that bought the album were the folks expecting LTI pt 2. And PB was such a big change, the album sales fizzled, no tour and the Beasties disappeared quitely again until they re-exploded in 1992 with CYH.
I don't think they really got a whole lot of brand new fans in that PB era. Just the die-hards left over from LTI and then a whole new crop of fans when CYH came out.

all my friends but one, hated the beastie boys.we were 16 at the time and all into hip hop.
But with constant plays of paul's boutique and the help of the "shake your rump" video, I got two of my friends into the beastie boys in 1989.
we would often walk through subways and dance and rap in front of those curved mirrors, pretending we were in the "shake your rump video" shot with the fish eyed lens.

I originally heard the beasties in third grade. One of my friends brought check your head and the first snoop dog album to school and we listened too them during recess. Needless to say my parents did not approve of either so I rediscovered the beasties when intergalactic became a big hit and the video was all over mtv. From then I started sneaking their music along with other "inappropriate" hip hop music into the house!

To tell you the truth, had it been the actual Licensed to Ill jewel case I would have ignored it. I had no idea what a Beastie Boy was until I actually popped that cassette in. The sole reason I yanked it out of the car was because it was a Neil Diamond tape.

It's a beautiful noise
And it's a sound that I love
And it fits me as well
As a hand in a glove
Yes it does, yes it does

Heard LTI back in '87 and i thought that sh*t was off the hook. I initially liked Fight for your Right, but when i heard Time to get ill i was hooked, especially that 808 kick  . A friend of mine bought PB in '89 together with Tougher than leather of Run DMC on vinyl. We played it over and over again, man that sh*t was dope!!!! PB was new, PB was fresh, PB was THE SH*T and it still is

i am really surprised by some of the answers on here, in a good way. Obviously i dont know everyone's ages but its surprising to hear some peoples first bb album was one of the later ones. just because some are really knowledgable about all their career (i realise some have researched and got right into them) .Its a shock that i have been into them longer than some really hardcore and clued up fans. Cos i dont really know that much despite being a fan for around 20 years

How many times do I read comments online, on you-tube and other places where "newer" fans always say "Man we don't have bands like that anymore." We really don't. I think the BB's are timeless so attracting the younger fans or people who got into them much later is just another attest to how amazing they are as musicians and artists. :o

If things had gone the other way with MCA, or if they'd hung it up for whatever reason, it would be a huge loss. Because as individual as our preferences are for what they have done musically or whatever (and continue to do), you really will not get a band like this ever again.

7th/8th grade?? (Who really remembers that far back) , guy got on the bus with a small (by standards) ghetto blaster playing LTI, first day it was No Sleep Til' Brooklyn, next day it was Brass Monkey, I was hooked......
Spent the next 20 years listening to punk/industrial/goth/ etc.... But have always loved the fact that the Beastie's cover a very WIDE swath of musical genres. No matter what you're into they've pretty much got you covered.

For me it was Ill Communication - I heard it at a friend's house when I was 11 or 12. Tracks 5, 7 and 13 got me hooked!

Hello Nasty got me into BB.
I was thirteen when it was out I think. I went to a supermarket with my mom, went straight to the CD section (of course) and started to listen to Beastie Boys on the listening station, it had Hello Nasty. The cases of the CD's where in the shelf next to the listening station. I picked up the Beastie Boys one to check it out. It was open, and a CD inside of it. I took the cd and put it in my pocket.
That's how I got my first Beastie Boys CD.
I think I've bought these releases in that order. IC, CYH, Anthology, PB, TT5B, LTI, TMU, PB (Vinyl), LTI (Vinyl)

LTI, duh. FFYR, Girls, & Paul Revere were my favorites.
That being said I strongly dislike Girls now and never listen to it, occasionally listen to FFYR, but still love Paul!

In 1996 a friend at work put on Paul's Boutique. I had heard of the Beastie Boys but I had never listened to one of their albums. Everyone was singing along with certain parts of it and I just stood there with my jaw on the floor. I had probably already heard Hey Ladies but from start to finish I was really floored by that album.

Well, I got into LTI back in the day when it came out like every other 15 year old kid at the time, but it was my spur of the moment purchase of CYH in release week having not paid much attention to or listened to the bboys since LTI that really kickstarted my obsession with the bboys.(y)
PB passed me & pretty much the UK by at the time. Didnt buy it til after CYH and then could only find it on import.

I remember my older cousin having LTI but for me, it was when CYH came out when I was 12. One of the things that sold me was how cool the "So What'cha Want" video was. Still one of my favorite albums ever.

44 ain't no great shakes, pretty poor really. From my, admittedly piss poor memory, I dont recall much promotion or interest at the time over here, probably why it passed me by back then.
