View Full Version : californians should be very pissed off
california has two senators in the us senate, who each represent approximately 18.5 million people. meanwhile, delaware also has two senators in the us senate, who each represent approximately 272,000 people.
something is very wrong with that picture.

isn't that what the House of Representatives is for?
what about New York, Texas, Florida, and Illinois?
they only have two senators as well.
Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas.... (sing along!)
oh and Delaware has approximately 885,000 residents.
the senate is where legislation, initially passed by the house of representatives, essentially goes to die. highly populated states such as california, new york, texas, florida, illinois et al deserve more representation (specifically via proportional representation, as the two party system via first-past-the-post is antiquated and undemocratic).
i think this issue was fairly well debated by the founders

Darn you people who know about laws and things! Always messing stuff up for regular hard working Americans! Take your knowledge and go back to Africa!
though now that i think about it, slavery was pretty well-debated by the founders too and look how they came out on that one

the population and the number of states within the union obviously aren't what they were in the 18th century. the electoral system currently in use (in which the winner takes all and shuts out everyone except dems and repubs), as well as the complete lack of representation by population, is a farce.

... as you soon remembered to take into account: the founders and writers of the US Constitution were Wealthy White Men.
it's also worth noting that the issue of Representation in our bicameral legislature is an ongoing debate.
article 1, section 2 outlines the creation of The House. It was amended by the 14th amendment "Citizenship Rights" in 1868. This amendment also eliminated the "three-fifths" representation for slaves.
article 1, section 3 outlines the creation of The Senate. It was amended by the 17th amendment "Senators Elected by Popular Vote." Prior to 1913, senators were chosen by the Legislature thereof.

apologies. We have much more important things to be pissed off about here than the fact that Delaware has the same amount of reps in the senate has California. I'm pretty sure a California senator has much more pull than one from Delaware.
