What do you think are the deepest songs/lines lyrically? From hip-hop to country and anything else, post 'em up.
Delia's Gone by Johnny Cash. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1iKEPzF1Js) This gets a mention for me because the last verse never fails to send shivers down my spine. Heavy shit.
Beach Chair by Jigga & Chris Martin. This song is the kinda shit I'd like played at my funeral. Introspective swagger, and the beat is kind of immense too. [words] (http://lyrics.wikia.com/Jay-Z:Beach_Chair)
Not exactly a classic (it's a relatively new song and musically is nothing special), but I think the whole of Sober Up by Joe Budden is pretty deep (apart from the corny chorus and Crooked I's stupid shouty verse at the end). Some emotional shit as well as some light-hearted wordplay- the bit about the "honourable discharge" made me laugh out loud first time I heard it. When I first got this song I rewound and re-listened about 10 times. Deepness. [words] (http://www.joebuddenlyrics.com/sober-up-ft-crooked-i)
What do you all think?

How could I forget this (http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/p/pulp/common_people.html)... in my opinion the greatest social commentary song of the last 30 years.
One summer evening drunk to hell
I stood there nearly lifeless
An old man in the corner sang
Where the water lilies grow
And on the jukebox Johnny sang
About a thing called love
And it's how are you kid and what's your name
And how would you bloody know?
In blood and death 'neath a screaming sky
I lay down on the ground
And the arms and legs of other men
Were scattered all around
Some cursed, some prayed, some prayed then cursed
Then prayed and bled some more
And the only thing that I could see
Was a pair of brown eyes that was looking at me
But when we got back, labeled parts one to three
There was no pair of brown eyes waiting for me
And a rovin' a rovin' a rovin' I'll go
For a pair of brown eyes
I looked at him he looked at me
All I could do was hate him
While Ray and Philomena sang
Of my elusive dream
I saw the streams, the rolling hills
Where his brown eyes were waiting
And I thought about a pair of brown eyes
That waited once for me
So drunk to hell I left the place
Sometimes crawling sometimes walking
A hungry sound came across the breeze
So I gave the walls a talking
And I heard the sounds of long ago
From the old canal
And the birds were whistling in the trees
Where the wind was gently laughing
And a rovin' a rovin' a rovin' I'll go
For a pair of brown eyes

Deep as in it's meaning to me?
The only song that has ever made me cry.

Hope there's someone
Who'll take care of me
When I die, will I go
Hope there's someone
Who'll set my heart free
Nice to hold when I'm tired
There's a ghost on the horizon
When I go to bed
How can I fall asleep at night
How will I rest my head
Oh I'm scared of the middle place
Between light and nowhere
I don't want to be the one
Left in there, left in there
There's a man on the horizon
Wish that I'd go to bed
If I fall to his feet tonight
Will allow rest my head
So here's hoping I will not drown
Or paralyze in light
And godsend I don't want to go
To the seal's watershed
Hope there's someone
Who'll take care of me
When I die, Will I go
Hope there's someone
Who'll set my heart free
Nice to hold when I'm tired

I think Paul Westerberg penned the most defined song about complete resignation to alcoholism when he wrote "Here Comes a Regular (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKWjFa_36L8&feature=related)". Utterly bleak and depressing. "Here Comes A Regular" is a triumph of songwriting. Westerberg and The Replacements created a true gift of a song here. Westerberg has the ability to make you feel like you're right in the car with him, alongside him at the door, drinking from the same bottle.
"I used to live at home, now I stay at the house" is enough lyrical imagery to make it forever connected to my life, but the clincher is the genius of the line, "Everybody wants to be someone's here" ...wanting to be someone as well as "belong to" someone...
From the outset this song is nothing special, it's regular.

Me and Mia by Ted Leo
A very sad and complicated song. And what great guitar playing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWutgbqLel8
As I was walking through a life one morning
The sun was out, the air was warm
But oh, I was cold
And though I must have looked a half a person
To tell the tale in my own version
It was only then that I felt whole
Do you believe in something beautiful?
Then get up and be it
Fighting for the smallest goal:
To get a little self-control
I know how hard you try
I see it in your eyes
Call your friends, because we've forgotten
What it's like to eat what's rotten
And what's eating you alive
Might help you to survive
We went on, as we were on a mission
Latest in a Grand Tradition
Oh, what did we find?
It was Ego who was flying the banner
Me and Mia, Ann and Ana, oh
We'd been unkind
Do you believe in something beautiful?
Then, get up and be it
Fighting for the smallest goal:
To get a little self-control
I see it in your eyes
I see it in your spine
But call your friends, because we've forgotten
What it's like to eat what's rotten
And what's eating you alive
Might help you to survive
Even the nights that could get better
And even the days aren't all that bad
And after a week of fighting
As more and more it seems the right thing
Do you believe in something beautiful?
Then get up and be it
Fighting for the smallest goal:
To gain a little self-control
Won't anybody here just let you disappear?
Not doctors, nor your mom nor dad
But me and Mia, Ann and Ana
Know how hard you try
Don't you see it in my eyes?
Sick to death of my dependence
Fighting food to find trancendence
Fighting to survive
More dead, but more alive
Cigarettes and speed to live
And sleeping pills to feel forgiven
All that you contrive
And all that you're deprived
All the bourgeois social angels
Telling you you've got to change
Don't have any idea
They'll never see so clear
But don't forget what it really means to hunger strike
When you don't really need to
Some are dying for the cause, but that don't make it yours
And even the nights, they could get better

She came from Greece she had a thirst for knowledge,
she studied sculpture at Saint Martin's College,
that's where I,
caught her eye.
She told me that her Dad was loaded,
I said "In that case I'll have a rum and coca-cola."
She said "Fine."
and in thirty seconds time she said,
"I want to live like common people,
I want to do whatever common people do,
I want to sleep with common people,
I want to sleep with common people,
like you."
Well what else could I do -
I said "I'll see what I can do."
I took her to a supermarket,
I don't know why but I had to start it somewhere,
so it started there.
I said pretend you've got no money,
she just laughed and said,
"Oh you're so funny."
I said "yeah?
Well I can't see anyone else smiling in here.
Are you sure you want to live like common people,
you want to see whatever common people see,
you want to sleep with common people,
you want to sleep with common people,
like me."
But she didn't understand,
she just smiled and held my hand.
Rent a flat above a shop,
cut your hair and get a job.
Smoke some fags and play some pool,
pretend you never went to school.
But still you'll never get it right,
cos when you're laid in bed at night,
watching roaches climb the wall,
if you call your Dad he could stop it all.
You'll never live like common people,
you'll never do what common people do,
you'll never fail like common people,
you'll never watch your life slide out of view,
and dance and drink and screw,
because there's nothing else to do.
Sing along with the common people,
sing along and it might just get you through,
laugh along with the common people,
laugh along even though they're laughing at you,
and the stupid things that you do.
Because you think that poor is cool.

This song is CLASSIC also one of my favorites. (y)
Probably one of my favorite lyrics. Not to deep.
Janes Addiction - Pigs in Zen
Oh, I know about war
But I just wanna fuck
I know about pain and suffering and being cold
But I just wanna fuck.
