On Sunday, 10 October, at a rally in Philadelphia before a mostly black audience, Obama attacked Republicans, saying "they're counting on… black folks staying home."

Well, what the heck does that mean? What message was the "great unifier" attempting to send to black America?

I can only conclude Obama meant: "Look y'all, everyone knows the Republicans are really the KKK without the hoods. Republicans along with those white Tea Party racists are out to get me, your black president. They want to turn back the clock."

Obama and company's clever usage of the term "turn back the clock" conjures up all kinds of fearful images in the minds of black Americans. (the author is black (http://www.lloydmarcus.com/))

Obama saying Republicans want black folks to stay home on election day is a divisive use of the "race card", unworthy of the president of the United States.

on a british news related note:
I laughed repeatedly when listening to the BBC World Service cover the World Series.
"it is the top of the seventh innings"
"the phillies lead two to nil"
and a handful of others

Funny how he uses the race card to support his argument that Obama is using the race card. Anyone who says "Liberal Media" is an idiot in my book, regardless of their race or culture.

Is the contention that using the race card, or exploiting the blatant race based loyalism that exists in the black American culture being beneath the office of president wrong?

Your argument is based on false premises. First, you're confusing race and culture. Second, you're assuming that "black people stick together", you're assuming that the Obama "quote" (with its ". . ." and all) is akin to "whitey's trying to take our freedom away." Basically, your (and his) entire argument is steeped in biased, devisive rhetoric and false assumptions tailored to serve a politcal agenda. If you want to believe that this dude is "on point", if it makes you feel more secure in your political beliefs, or your stance on race relations in this country, then have at it. My chances of changing your mind are slim to none.

At best, this article is an example of the pot calling the kettle black (pun intended, no racist).

Yeah, and this is a blog post by some random dude...so what the fuck?

And is he american or british? he spelled nationalizing with an "s".

Also, dude said this:

He put words in Obama's mouth, then he commented on the fake quote as if it were a real quote. That is such total bullshit.

Yeah, it's poorly written but I got the sense the author was saying Obama also used that phrase even though the author didn't originally quote Obama before later referencing the quote.

Here's another article, about another speech, which does quote Obama making the "turn back the clock" innuendo...

But the hall grew quiet as Obama warned, "Remember, the other side has a plan too. It's a plan to turn back the clock on every bit of progress we've made."
Obama never spoke the name of the Republican party, but repeatedly invoked its policies -- and did name its House leader, Rep. John Boehner, a favorite Obama target in recent days.
Members of "the other side," Obama said, "want to take us backward. We want to move America forward."

Fear has an unmistakeable odor.

they do want to take america backward. I don't see the problem with his terminology. It is scary. and any politician would tailor his manner of speech and discussion topics to the audience.

You know, I was riding my bike last week near the ice arena before a blackhawks game and I overheard some people talking in a car with a wisconsin license plate say, "careful, there are black people around here" while they were looking for parking. they were completely serious and seemed very nervous.

People are still scared of black people, it's a fact. Maybe when it's not a fact anymore, black people will stop banding together to defend their pride.

well yes, when you consider that the tea party and those on the far right in the republican party want to abolish the minimum wage, eliminate unemployment benefits, privatize social security, repeal health care reform (which would allow private insurance companies to deny coverage due to pre-existing conditions), repeal the 14th amendment, and abolish education, that is turning back the clock to the 19th century.

Word to Big Bird, DW

That people are taking this 'turn back the clock' business as racist or offensive or some kind of negative innuendo 1) says a LOT about themselves and how they are projecting and 2) blows my mind. Seriously WTF
