?

Shit was so stupid at my polling place.. the ballots were NOT secret, there were these new electronic machines, there were two questions on the other side of the page that were not pointed out by elections officials (EVERYONE i talked to missed them), I wasnt asked for ID and no one compared my signature to the one on record. (n)

I noticed there was an anti-prohibition candidate on the ballot (not in CA) and that the local family court judge had no opponent... wack!

Did vote though...

it is a little weird, yeah. all you'd have to do is steal someone's mail (to figure out their name and address), get to the polling place before them and boom you just disenfranchised someone

if the poll workers take shifts you could show up again later under your own name (or another stolen one at another polling place if you have a fast car) and vote multiple times

Voted on the way home from the job, was not electronic this time. This time I got to shove the 2 page ballot (CA) in the box myself, without the aid of the 17 year old viewing my voting for 30 seconds before HE shoved it in the box for me like last time.

Prop. 19 is dead in Cali. Not to fear, it wasn't the right bill for the job, http://www.jackherer.com/archives/potheads-say-%E2%80%98no-to-prop-19%E2%80%99/

Not a smoker myself, I wanted something to make it easier for MEDICAL smokers to get what they needed, Prop. 19 made life much rougher for people who need medicinal marijuana to obtain and cultivate it. It's much easier for them to deal with the current laws in Cali. than it would be under the "Tax and Regulate" laws that Prop. 19 would impose upon them.

Yeah, I thought It might be "Cool" to be able to go and buy legal weed, but really, not being a smoker, it wasn't my main concern. Freeing up people who NEED, and not WANT legal pot was my concern, and Prop. 19 was not in their best interest I felt...

Oh, and they didn't check my ID either... Just a "Sign Here".

Flame all you want, but I really stressed over this, and I did what I thought was right by them. Read up on the actual proposition, and see what I'm talking about.

Anyway, I think something will eventually pass to make it legal, but I just hope it makes life easier for the people that actually NEED it to help with their quality of life.

You know what? I don't give a fuck! My neighbor saw me voting, he knows I'm a true American, so I can light off all the Roman Candles I want right next to his house on the 4th of July and he can't say shit to me. That's all that matters

secret ballots aren't all that necessary. people are actually more responsible about theirs votes when it's not secret.

also, any sort of identity fraud that would make a difference in an election would have to be on a huge scale. I just don't think it would be easy enough to pull off effectively. there's more fraud in absentee voting.

they didn't check my ID, but Ishowed my voter registrationcard.

I agree with everything you said here, and tried to explain some of the same points to deaf ears in the Prop 19 thread.

The only difference, is I voted YES knowing it would not pass.

prop 19 was a poorly written bill, period.

CA will try again in 2012.

there were some medicinal marijuana initiatives in South Dakota, Arizona, Texas, Colorado, and Michigan, as well as the big Prop 19 in CA, mostly all failed because of low turnout in the midterm elections...

some local ordinances did pass. California voters agreed to tax medical marijuana but not legalize it full out...

So that's good news, I guess! I was watching the illustrious Brian Williams last night and the panel was joking that "who cares" if it gets legalized over there "everyone's smokin it anyway!" That was interesting.

I wonder if anyone else saw any irregularities at their polling place? I'm still bothered by the no ID thing

the only time i had to show my ID was when i moved to my own place. all the other times i usually went over with my parents who had been to the same place for 30 years.

in any case, i don't think anyone i voted for with opposition actually won....

The problem I have is that I live right on the border of Wisconsin and Minnesota (Hudson is right on the St. Croix River) and get all my local news out of the Twin Cities. They do cover some news from here and other border towns but only if it's newsworthy.

So when mid-term elections roll around I seriously have NO IDEA who is running/what they stand for, or even get to see their campaign commercials or debates.

Hell, since I've moved here I didn't even know who the governor of Wisconsin was.

Lame.

voters can put ballot initiatives on the...ballot which, if they pass, have the effect of legislation (meaning they're law, but the legislature can overturn them just like any other legislation if the initiatives (or lawmakers, depending) are terrible enough)

massachusetts had 3 this year: one to halve the sales tax (failed), one to repeal special tax on alcohol (passed) and one to repeal a law which requires developers of subsidized housing to pass muster in front of a central government agency rather than getting permits from local zoning boards (or something like that - it failed so who cares)

i voted no on all of them - even my broke booze-loving ass isn't terribly burdened by sales tax and cutting revenue at a time when the state is having budget problems seems kind of irresponsible to me but whatever, i guess people know best how to spend their money (on negligibly cheaper booze now, apparently)

there was also a fourth, nonbinding question which had something to do with asking the legislature to demand that people in the middle east be allowed to live free from laws which discriminated on the basis of religion or something useless like that. i abstained on it

I agree with everything you said here, and tried to explain some of the same points to deaf ears in the Prop 19 thread.

i take the testimony of judges, and current and former law enforcement officials seriously, especially when considering that a prop 19 victory would have dealt a severe blow to mexican drug cartels (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-10860614).

they'll also support the next legalization bill in 2012, one that Californians will be more supportive of as well...

Prop 19 was not the bill Californians wanted.
