not threads about this yet?

anyways, this show looks like it is going to be seriously awesome. the hour and a half long premiere was great. deputy grimes really got on my nerves though. for the most part, he was the biggest dumbass and deserved to get it more than once. it was pretty creepy and sort of surreal when grimes woke up in the hospital, but again annoying at the same time how he essentially couldn't put two and two together and realize some sort of societal meltdown had occured.

I saw a preview of this from dodgy download site a few weeks ago - just saw zombies and thought, ok - I'll give it a whirl.

The 28 Days Later scene kinda annoyed me to especially because he kinda had prior knowledge of what could happen. I can forgive a lot when Zombies are involved because Zombies are awesome.

Has S01E02 aired yet? I want to keep up but the version I watch was grainy and low res, it might have better potential as a 720p

It was awesome.

I have no problem with the hospital scene since I know it's not a 28 Days Later ripoff/homage.

They don't call them "zombies" in the comic book, and I think it's only Morgan who used the term "walkers" there. It's usually "roamers" or "lurkers" in the book.

I was pretty impressed with it...the FX were fantastic, great looking zombies...I'll be curious to see how closley it follows the story lines and events that transpire in the books...especially the physical transformation Rick endures...just finished this (http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x265/mcmoot/vol12.jpg) last night...(y)

I dug it, but have no idea what "book" it is adapted from. The breathing from the zombies was kinda weird, almost made me uncomfortable. I kept finding myself clearing my throat. :p

Yup.

And I highly recommend the graphic novels to all. It's under the same name The Walking Dead (http://www.hiddenrobot.com/WALKINGDEAD/).

I follow the shows twitter feed and they just updated this morning: Watch #TheWalkingDead (http://twitter.com/#%21/search?q=%23TheWalkingDead)’s series premiere Online for free. AMCTV.com (http://amctv.com/) is streaming the first episode only. http://bit.ly/dy0CNA

Actually, kirkman did that scene first in his comic rendition which the show is based on.

I think that's what TAL was getting at: "it's not it's not a 28 Days Later ripoff/homage." I love/hate all the nerd bloggers and commenters talking about the show "I don't like the 28 days later opening."

Whether or not people know that the book had that opening originally, the book is awesome and so is the show so far. Suck it people!

p.s. is anyone really curious to see what they do with Michonne in the show? I was trying to imagine her character translated on to the screen and somehow I just can't see it, but I'm hopeful.

That first episode was the shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. My girlfriend is a bit of a graphic novel nerd and pushed me to read the first issue before the show premiered, which got me really excited for it. They actually managed to work some emotion into it as well like the scene with Morgans zombie wife in the front yard and him trying to find the strength to shoot her.

I will definitely be watching this closely as this season of Dexter has turned into a wet fart.

28 Days Later came out in the US about 4 months before the first issue of The Walking Dead. But Kirkman had written it long before that since it was already at the printers around that time. He says that he didn't see the movie until later.

It's all from The Day Of The Triffids, anyway.

I'm not a great zombie-genre fan. But it's getting pretty gripping, so I'll give it a go.

Anyone remember the main character as Egg in This Life?

I kept waiting for somebody to say ZOMBIES!, instead they give them dumb names like 'walkers'. lame.

otherwise it was great.

I haven't read the comics, but judging from the first episode it seems to be following the same rules as George Romero's original "... of the Dead" trilogy. The word 'zombie' was only mentioned once in that trilogy I think. The reason it's not used much is because it makes the characters appear self aware and breaks the 4th wall. Zombies aren't real, so calling them that makes the situation seem less real and more like a movie. Most zombie stories take Romero's lead and refrain from saying 'zombie' for this reason. "Shaun of the Dead" alludes to this when Shaun tells Ed not to say the 'z-word' because it's "ridiculous". Find me a zombie film that uses the word 'zombie' frequently, and I'll give you fifty quid ;)

Kid Presentable
11-05-2010, 07:29 PM
The writer didn't want them living in a world that knew of zombies and zombie conventions because it would cheapen the drama. Fair dos. I don't have a source, but it sounds about right.

Adam

Eek, didn't mean to imply any plagiarism. Didn't know it was based on a comic. I was just saying the 28 Days Later scene annoyed me because of the same reason as saz - not that is was similar to 28 Days Later.

yep. saying that though, it'd be refreshing to see a zombie film/show that actually embraces self-awareness. Shaun of the Dead comes the closest as you mention. but you know, it's a show about zombies, it's not exactly Shakespeare.

So, I've read they are only gonna get to the part where Shane buys it in this season (which will only go up to Episode 5.)

That would make Michonne and the prison not showing up until, say, season 4.

the acting is fine. they all for the most part look like real, everyday normal people, who all have their own faults, foibles and traits. some of them you can identify and sympathize with, and others you can't stand, or feel that they're so incompetent and annoying that they deserve to get it.

boring men is the worst show ever. i'd rather watch paint dry or all creatures great and small.

It stayed down until I shit it out as diarrhea, I then ate the liquid shit which made me throw up a weird combination of puke and shit which again I scooped up and drank/ate it. Thank God I DVR'd this shit. I finally got caught up over the weekend. Man, this show fucking rules. The effects are unreal and the emotion injected into every episode is top notch. Who gives a fuck what came first with regards to 28 Days Later? Can't shit just be similar?

I think it's awfully good, but I don't know if my interest will last over a 13 episode season.

Things ended in a promising place this week though -- so maybe it will get more interesting again.

I liked that the only actor I recognized was left on the roof because he was the guy I was sure I'd see more of. I like the unexpected.

(Mad Men has been wonderful but there are times with the style has distracted from the substance. I'll put up with a lot to look at Jon Hamm though.)

*spoilers for those who have not seen it*

The Vato scene was a little too in-your-face "don't stereotype" to be perfect, but in the end I think it still worked okay.

The CGI in that last episode was SO, so, so very bad. Small things like that take away from a show for me. Especially since the zombie make-up has been so on-point. And then the RV is just perfectly far enough away to not be affected by that blast? The windows don't at least blow out? OK.

Overall though they did a good job.

I am a little sad we didn't see what most thought would be the ending (Carl). And with the direction they took things I do wonder if we'll see Michonne at all. I'm guessing we would though considering the Governor is such a key element in the books and showing the psychology of how people change in survival situations. Fingers crossed.

I think Glenn was so perfectly cast by the way. I love him.
