Looks like Pennsylvania is on the cusp of being cracked open. There is also an anti-hydrofracking movement building in NY state. This is quite a dangerous procedure for humans and animals alike. The area also falls under the Allegheny National Forest and NY State Park - this could easily destroy those beautiful and beloved natural areas.

Deregulation has allowed the companies protection from disclosure of the chemicals they use.

Once these areas are depleted of the natural gas the companies will move on, the economy and environment left unhinged for the citizens.

There is a town in PA that has been abandoned due to contamination (actually a massive coal mine fire) - does PA want more of this?

I'm very concerned about this.

Corbett and Toomey are going to ruin our state.

This has become a real issue in my hometown in upstate NY. The gas companies are paying individual landowners big $$ for the right to do this on thier land. The figures are hard to ignore for most rural residents in this economy regardless of dangers. Vultures is definitely the right word.

absolutely - Won't people learn!?!

Look at the wicked damage occurring in the Appalachians, these mineral/energy companies are locusts - they'll chew up the land leaving behind a poisoned mess for the residents.

And look who has just jumped into the action!

Chevron Corp., the second-largest U.S. oil company, agreed to buy Atlas Energy Inc. for $3.2 billion, giving it access to the natural gas-rich Marcellus Shale formation in Pennsylvania.

Other excellent resources addressing the dangers of hydrofracking

They're going to get what they want regardless. All it takes is one person in each neighborhood to accept the offer and then these companies roll in, drill down and spider out under everyone's property anyway, so people are starting to think that they may as well get some money for it.

Oh is that YOUR drinking water?

Well let me put my chemicals in it - enjoy your birth defects and cancer rates!

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/01/pennsylvania-gas-drillers-dump-pollution-drinking-water-supplies/

The natural gas boom gripping parts of the U.S. has a nasty byproduct: wastewater so salty, and so polluted with metals like barium and strontium, that most states require drillers to get rid of the stuff by injecting it down shafts thousands of feet deep.

Not in Pennsylvania, one of the states at the center of the gas rush.

In the two years since the frenzy of activity began in the vast underground rock formation known as the Marcellus Shale, Pennsylvania has been the only state allowing waterways to serve as the primary disposal place for the huge amounts of wastewater produced by a drilling technique called hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.

Looks like NY has a moratorium, but the dumb and desperate are wringing their hands in anticipation
