edit: as a side note, to anyone who is bored and likes Street View (who doesn't) Global Genie is great fun http://web.mit.edu/~jmcmicha/www/globegenie/

edit II: to explain what it does, it randomisers longitude and latitude until it gets a match with streeview and teleports you there. You can choose to include and not include certain continents to. Antarctica is fun

Sometimes (read oftentimes) when I have a spare moment at work I start globetrotting with google. Sometimes I do it when I've been drinking and imagine I am in these faraway places that I will never visit.

I like to look up scenes of crime and destruction from news articles on BBC and visit them on street view. There's nothing like a good tour of a murderer's haunt or the scene of a really good gas explosion.

I live about 10 minutes walk from here (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?client=firefox-a&channel=s&hl=en&q=lowton+warrington&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Lowton,+Warrington,+Wigan,+United+Kingdom&gl=uk&ei=74TlTJbMDYS3hAee8sjsDA&oi=geocode_result&ved=0CBcQ8gEwAA&layer=c&cbll=53.468029,-2.552697&panoid=27zjVCkraYKSlymkWLnR5w&cbp=12,106.24,,0,-1.17&ll=53.467971,-2.55312&spn=0.038268,0.111494&z=14), but I'm not telling you where, although there is a hobo who lives in a tent under this bit of road, but it's not me.

How come do your images look so damn good?

I can only see the top of my building, which is damn ugly. I can't see the building itself, that is ugly too. But I wish I could.

Click on the A where the pin point is and there should be a link in that bubble for street view (where available - I don't think all of Brasil is done yet, but could be wrong)

Global imaging and mapping is fascinating. When I produce history and biography programs I sometimes use maps from the 17th and 18th century. I always wonder how they were so precise. They had to travel all the locations by horseback to know if an area was wooded, mountainous or if there were lakes, etc.
Now it is all about technology which is equally intriguing.

I don't know then. But when they released South America other month I played around with Global Genie in that area and it looked nothing like I thought it would.

It actually looked poorer than I thought it would be in the majority but then you'd get a few images that looked very affluent you don't quite expect after seeing the others... Its kinda interesting is all, street view is deserving a nobel prize in my opinion. An impossible project that can only evolve into the launch of other impossible projects and totally worth it in taking a little bit more of our privacy away - the trade : off I mean. I also thought DW was in SF.

Well, in Latin América there are lots of poor places and lots of rich ones, which can be pretty or not. I live in a very central area, but it's ugly. Especially because it sucks and there are no beaches and everytjing else. It always depends on where you go.

The photo of my house is really old. I've had work done to the house since. And my former car was parked in the driveway, which is odd because I rarely left it outside. The whole thing felt a bit creepy. It seemed more like a view into an alternate universe than just an old photo of my house.
