I've heard people say that the real reason we are there is to keep South Korea from fucking with North Korea, not the other way around.
This is some scary shit though for sure

All the best to the families in the recent troubles of the past few months...

We didn't have a war after those sailors were killed other month (about 30 of em?) And although its kinda an escalation; to me its more a cry for help. North Korea are in a change of government, they'll be alliances made and lost over the past 6 months and the next 6 months. Wouldn't surprise me the order to fire came across with conflicting information from within the N. Korea camp.

WWIII - I really don't think so. There is neither a strategic advantage or natural resource advantage in kicking that hornets nest right now (like there was Iraq and Afghan) and although the US and Europe would back the South, China have a finger in every pie and the last thing they want is pressure from both sides on them as they are getting a taste of the materialistic life - which is great! Siding with the North would create all sorts of trade problems because they make the money selling plastic crap to the west. China CAN influence N. Korea, they might do it all behind close doors and will let the west worry a bit but behind those walls they'll piss out any bonfire N.Korea can make.

I think.

phew, feel free to keep reassuring me.
we're kind of at panic stations cos there's this escalating path i can envision of the states getting angry over nuclear weapons in north korea again, china siding with NK, australia unable to keep their noses clean because of alliances with the us and people here freaking out and jumping on the bomb the shit out of them bandwaggon cos its closer to home than lots of the other crap that goes on in the world.
but i prefer your vision.

I'm not one for guns over butter but I don't see why South Korea, at this point, hasn't picked a military or industrial target to retaliate and harshly. You can only condem so much before the bully relizes it can do what it wants. And it wasn't soldiers that were killed, but civilians. A missle on a nuke facility being built would be a good message. Send Israel over there. They are good at that.

The South has reportedly shelled back but no reports on the damage (surprisingly). We'll have to wait and see if the North decides to take further action. That may be all, but tomorrow is another day and if the North is feeling fruity, the South WILL take more drastic action if this continues.

North Korea is a wicked slippery slope - China definitely needs to get a grip on them if they continue to support the North. If it comes down to drastic measures (ie: the BIG War), China will have a vicious rabid bulldog in NK, so I can see why they keep them around.

It's sad though, so many North Koreans are unsuspecting hostages - brainwashed to the max. With the change in leadership this might have been a show of force and a strategy to keep their civilians under their thumb.

Supposedly a U.S./SK military exercise was provocation for the shelling.

AND

Unfortunately the South is calling for enormous retaliation

http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/11/23/nkorea.skorea.military.fire/index.html?on.cnn=1

Lee called "indiscriminate attacks on civilians are a grave matter." He said that since "North Korea maintains an offensive posture," South Korea's military forces -- the army, air force and navy -- "should unite and retaliate against [the North's] provocation with multiple-fold firepower."

They are getting fed up with them. This might become something bigger - What sucks is the U.S. has forces there - China apparently does not, so instead of keeping this a proxy war, the U.S will be directly involved.

South Korea can only bite its tongue for so long until they have to say enough is enough. N.Korea will push their luck to see how far they can, it's a dangerous game.

We all know the North is irrational and unpredictable, but hopefully China will calm them down, because even they know it's not in anyone's interests to start warring. China has far more important things right now than being behind a conflict involving North Korea.

didnt N Korea get the memo, with Obama president the potential for nuclear violence doesnt exist anymore?

wait, I thought N Korea had promised Jimmy Carter and Madelyn Albright that they would play nice with the rest of the world?

maybe we need to send Jesse Jackson over there to work everything out?

seriously, what is needed here is more pat downs by the TSA of 11 year old children

but don't worry, a speech is being prepared for obama to read from his teleprompter

.....because you know, China holds absolutely no responsibility for North Korea's actions.

Now for something that'll blow your mind

At least Democrats have tried/are trying to keep the Armistice (which a Republican President had a hand in) intact. You should thank them for sticking out their necks.

p.s.

The TSA was formed in 2001 as a branch of Homeland Security - guess who was President.

Funny, when I thought of North Korea shelling South Korea, I thought of 11 year olds getting patted down by the TSA.

Oh wait, no I didn't. Creepy.

Haha, at least you're funny. I didn't think of 11 year olds getting patted down by the TSA either. But now I'm thinking about 11 year olds patting ME down.

Mmmm, oh shit.

Things are seemingly going into the crapper. Not the thread but between North and South Korea. The tension is higher now and the talk keeps escalating.
