As much as this sounds very cool, I hope the new album concept isn't too much rooted in some kind of retro Beastie attitude. We already had that with TT5B, I really hope they can move forward a little bit :p
Kid Presentable
12-06-2010, 11:12 PM
There was nothing 'retro Beastie' about TT5B. Some old samples aside.
And yeah, I guess this short film will incorporate/be incorporated with the music video. Or not; it all seems very Kanye - and I must say the 'star power' is still a bit weird.

Ya know, I'd be kind of glad if the stars only appeared in the short film and not the music video. Videos with guest stars tend not to age very well. Like that 80's Michael Jackson video. Look it's....Lou Diamond Phillips....and...uh...Mayim Bialik....and...uh...who's that guy? Fabio?

i think i get why you think this but as i said before, they do what they want. Plus its not like mike d is on Dancing with the Stars or Ad rock is on Celebrity Total Wipeout. They seem to be doing stuff on their terms with people they want to work with, not selling out for exposure. I'm guessing thats why you might be uneasy with all this.
At the end of the day, Yauch has had a life changing experience and he might have decided on trying certain projects or working with certian people that he has thought about for ages.

Something's really going awry with my communication here - I'm referring to the whole Kanye short movie of tracks from his new album. In fact it would be sorta cool if this short film incoroporated tracks from HSC, although it's been done by now.
And I don't think they're selling out. It's just unusual for them to lean on star power.

It's just unusual for them to lean on star power.
its hard to say before seeing it, but I would imagine it's less 'leaning' on star power than 'utilizing' it. its not like they need these other stars to be relevent; they're just capitalizing on their option to collaborate with them.
secondly, if this piece is moreover a short film than a music video (as it seems to be shaping up as), then who better to act in a film than actors? a video would be a different story, but even still I think the bboys have proven themselves many times over that their intentions are beyond cheap press.
thats my two cents, at least.

Maybe someone at the record company wanted to get this news out before the voting is tallied for the Rock and Roll HOF. That is a mighty big publicity boost on the eve of your first "proper" studio album in more than half a decade. We dont know who/why this is what they decided to do, but I just cant understand how anyone can see this as a negative. We haven't seen enough videos of just the three of them rapping into a fish-eye camera over the last 20+ years?

Thats a bad comparison. Every single person listed for the Beastie Boys video is a legitimate A-list star who has had a sustained/very long and successful career.
Yeah, it does depend somewhat on how cool your stars are.
But another thing with celeb filled videos is they can come off a bit random and like; look how many famous people we know. There was a Vampire Weekend video a while back with Jake Gyllenhaal and Lil Jon and others that was kind of like that, a bit random and slightly grating.
But the thing is, it depends on how you do it; if the video's like a movie with a story where the characters are played by famous actors, something like Body Movin' but with stars, then it could work well. And for a short film, like McDuff says, it would work fine.
Bottom line is I have no idea what the video is going to be like, so this is all idle speculation. And with a track record like Hornblower's, you should give them the benefit of the doubt.
There is a new Beastly Boys video coming out, and I'm excited, and I hope for something splendid.

nah I wasn't even aware you'd mentioned kanye or his short movies, i was just pointing out that having a 'star' in a video doesn't automatically make it big. and that was the only previous beastie example i could think of. i'm not even fussed either way so i have no idea why i chipped in to be honest. but your communication is just fine.

Totally agree. Only Adam can really make Hornblower amusing as he is. What was that 90's interview on the rooftop where Yauch is dressed as Hornblower. I have it on tape somewhere. I know it's on you-tube but it's also a favo of mine. (y)

I'm pretty sure that was when the Beastie Boys were on MTV's House of Style. And I believe a snippet of that interview appears on the Sabotage home video.
