So, I'm going to spend the big 40 in Europe and check out Octoberfest. Anyone ever been? If so, what did you think about it? How many days would you recommend staying? Other tips and tricks? I plan on taking the train in from some other country and flying out.

I've been about 4 times. I would recommend at least a few nights. You are doing the right thing by planning now. I would reserve a hotel as soon as possible as well as table reservations in the tent (if you want to do that). It's a really good time. Then afterwards, hit the clubs. There is this place in Munich, Kult Fabrik. Check it out after they close Oktoberfest for the evening.

Yea, I'm getting the sence that i need to get a hotel ASAP.
I'm planning on a week in Berlin and a week in Munich. Every other day for Oktoberfest
I went once and I had no plan. My girlfriend at the time is German on her mother's side and she spoke fluent German. I just remember large crowds, weiss beer and huge steins. I got really drunk and we would go to clubs at all hours of the night. I think I have a photo of a soldier standing post and I am hanging all over him and he is steadfast in steely demeanor. I actually talked a German policeman into giving me his hat. I have it in my office. Ah, the days when I was in my 20s.....
Have fun!

I went to Oktoberfest way back when... at the ripe young age of 21. The sister and I did not book much in advance, so we ended up staying in Augsburg, a short train ride away. It was not bad staying out of Munich, though I had to remain somewhat sober to ensure we made it on the train. (Successfully stealing 2 Spaten steins, which we still have!)
Regardless of where you stay, prepare long in advance. It really is the beer Olympics. I watched little old ladies drink 3 steins while I could barely finish one, people being pulled out on stretchers and bavarian pretzels the size of steering wheels. Plus, if you're not sitting & drinking, your riding amusement park rides. Expect to make a million friends & a few lovers. ;)
Man, I gotta go find those photos.
