if programs are cut - jobs gone - if jobs are outsourced - jobs gone - if workers are demonized - jobs gone - if hours cut back due to lack of revenue - jobs gone - soldiers shipped off to war to return to - jobs gone - if the environment is allowed to be wrecked - jobs gone

Might I also add - if jobs are gone and people are trying to go back to college to get a degree to get a better job, how the hell do people think we can cut funding to help those people and squash the further sinking of debt while they continue to be unemployed?

I really don't think those who say they're focus is on generating jobs *cough* Boehner*cough* (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoAizFm2C-4) while cutting programs that essentially provide jobs or opportunity to find jobs can be the solution. Sending more people into unemployment is the solution?

And starting small business isn't like sprinkling magic fairy dust on the sidewalk and *BAM!* you got your very own organ grinder, monkey and tin cup! Small business cost money to even come close to making money,

Remember those who make policy don't give a shit about living off your dime, but you're damned if you do. If they commit to all their headhunting investigative committees as threatened, don't be fooled - they won't do it for free!

I was hoping the President would announce something MAJOR....like say an immediate 75% travel reduction for all Federal Agencies beginning immediately.

We have the technology to do this today and hopefully KEEP PEOPLE EMPLOYED.

Skype enabled smart phones - Polycom Videoconferencing - it can be done and it would save lots of money....maybe it would hurt their tee time?

NO MORE GVT. TRAVEL.....

There are many definitions of "job." It's a testament to our lackluster representation that bills are simply tacked with "job growth" and "job killer" phrases. Every talking head politician goes on TV and says his/her number one priority is "job growth" and "growing the economy." Duh.

The question is, how does economic growth occur and what does its distribution look like?

GDP (http://www.bea.gov/national/nipaweb/TableView.asp?SelectedTable=5&FirstYear=2009&LastYear=2010&Freq=Qtr) = Consumption + Investment + Government Spending + (Exports - Imports)

To "grow" our economy (in the GDP growth rate sense that politicians are referring to - not in any more comprehensive sense of economic growth that accounts for education, health, or social well-being) we have to pull on one of these levers. President Obama wants to spur growth through government spending and increasing exports. Republicans want to spur growth primarily through consumption and investment (this is business investment in equipment, not asset investment). Both will create jobs. Our politicians must arrive at a compromise, one made in an uncertain economy - state/local debt default? inflation from QEII? stagnant housing market? 2012 election?

don't you mean republicans want to "create" jobs by continually cutting taxes for the top 1% and cutting corporate tax rates? all the while more jobs are being created overseas by multinational corporations, as opposed to creating more jobs on the homefront.

Sure, one could say that. I wasn't commenting on the merits of the Republican plan, I was just outlining the party's long-standing positions on lower taxes (more consumer spending) and less regulation (more business investment).

The video & your comments solidly contribute to the question of the distribution of growth, a critical question I think is largely ignored in public debate. We can also expect that whatever "job creation" plan is passed, it will be based on complex economic modeling filled with critical and controversial assumptions. In light of the increasing occurrence of black swan events, these economic models almost always turn out to be incorrect.
