Considering a security guard job - anyone have any advice?

The subject line pretty much says it all.

BTW as far as personalities types are concerned I'm not really an "alpha" :) so I was thinking more along the lines of a position that does not require carrying a firearm. But I did wrestle for my college's club so that could come in handy.

I worked security for a while when I was in the service and I work in Corrections now. A lot will depend on what shift you work and the location (warehouse, office buildings, hospital etc.)
Security is a very broad occupation, it can be very boring or very demanding. The main thing is you are to observe and report, when an incident occurs you are the eyes and ears that will aid in the police investigation.

First: Apply for an armed guard license. You better have a good and clean record. Compare prices to get the license. People will rip you off over this. $700 max is all you should pay.

Second: Look for jobs that are looking for armed guards.

Third: If ya just wanna be a security guard, I'm sure Macy's in NY has some quick openings for you.

Try something federal as well. Don't just think security guard. If you have had no federal prior experience, jump onto a federal jobsite like usajobs.

There's federal park ranger jobs and such. You could be lucky and get picked up.

Once in feds of any type of work and believe me, there's tons of different jobs, you can advance into whatever work you want after a few years.

If what you're reading in your local newspaper is "wanted security guards- no exp necessary- G.E.D. welcome".....all that crap, you need to steer clear from it.

Yes, and in most cases in armed positions, there's potentially chances that you'll be put into more sensitive type jobs which increases your salary as compared to regular security guards.

Getting an armed guard license is a good thing to keep on to. It will eventually pay itself off

Still, the motto is, if you want to have a job regardless for the reason, you want to at least be in one that you are comfortable in. In these hard times where jobs are more scarce, maybe you can find an ok job and feel good with it and possibly do something with it.

At my job, there's us- "spec ops". We run the whole show. Our duties are pretty vast.

There's also interior guards, basic Macy's type guards. Doormen, lobby security, inside building security..etc. They're not happy with their work and trust me, the types of people that get that job aren't really the most goal orientated people.

I ride the train and see some of these regular security guards in uniform and I want to vomit. Looking all jacked up and yet they're representing the company they work for.

I get lots of emails from them but for jobs that I have absolutely no training for despite using their search engine's filters, or good jobs in places that I cannot afford to move to.



Definitely keep up with it and in fact, try even getting on with TSA. That will eventually grow into something that could help you job history. USAjobs can go to hell though. I hate the whole thing about it. It was so much easier just going to whatever job's website and applying directly.

If you want an easy gig, find an overnight job. If you like reading, it'll be a good fit. You sit, do rounds every so often, and little ever happens. It really depends where you go and who you work for. Overall, its typically a slow job without much action and occasional paperwork.

We have a liquor store in town that has an armed guard, and it attracts an interesting crowd of people. I bet thats an interesting job :p

And yes I would like to find a job that has some kind of future (and would be nice if I actually enjoyed it too but don't want to push my luck), even if it isn't what I went to school for. I am much more into that than how large my paycheck is.

Maybe this is just my middle class white british bubble I live in but it seems crazy that normal stores need armed guards. Security guards in the UK generally involve a padlock and an alarm if the building is closed or if it's a night club or similar, a couple of guys with walkie talkies and clipboards.
