thebeatles.com (http://thebeatles.com/) announced that the LOVE album is finally available in digital form on iTunes, along with two exclusive tracks.
If you've never heard of this album or thought it was just a lame compilation for the Cirque du Soleil Vegas show (it's not), you might want to check it out.
Yes LOVE is a comp but not any comp you've ever heard before because it is a mashup album. This royally pissed off a lot of Beatles purists - "You're screwing with history!!" is a common cry - even though these Beatles songs were mashed up exclusively with.......the Beatles. And despite the mashing being done by the son of the man who produced the Beatles' original tracks, George Martin. So some tracks sound nearly identical to the originals, some are mildly mashed :) but quite a few are nearly unrecognizable.
And there's a new, sort of unplugged version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with a newly recorded string section written by George Martin himself.
Another aspect even people not into audio gear and recording issues may notice is the fact most songs sound much better than the originals (fyi Youtube audio streaming is not good enough to reveal most of these differences). That's because all these mashups were created from the original multitrack master tapes, which have been pretty much sitting in vaults nearly undisturbed since the late 60s. Compare that to the condition of the stereo master tapes which have been used over and over again to make LPs, 8-tracks, then cassettes and then finally CDs over the last 36 years. Analog sounds good but those tapes can get tired!
The following is for other people who also still cling ;) to physical music formats...........
I bought the dvd-audio+CD package the day this album came out back in November '06 (it's still available) and think for the most part it's well done. I wish the mashups had been more aggressive, and had involved more than just Beatles tunes but oh well.
And for anyone into surround music or wants to find out what true surround music is all about (it is not a surround receiver's "hall" or "club" button, trust me), I highly recommend the dvd-audio version. The mixing styles go from gentle to polite to oh-wow-what-the-hell-was-that! ("I Am The Walrus" is a good example of the last style). ----> The disc contains DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks for conventional players and for dvd-audio players, a high resolution 96kHz/24bit PCM 5.1 track. And for those who own certain Acuras, GM and a few other car makes, some of them come with dvd-audio surround systems - look for the logo on the faceplate. Cars are great places to listen to surround music!
