So - if a society wants to advance it's collective demand for modern communication, how should it be handled?
Give the corporations who claim they can make it a reality tax subsidies while adding a bit here or there to their profits or have the government do it - either way, your tax dollar will be paying for this. Once it is implemented would it be free forever? How would maintenance be handled? If a communications company handles it how much more will they charge for usage, would bandwidth be guaranteed, etc. etc.
I have read about cities/countries and the like going wi-fi. Maybe this should be handled on a state/city level rather than federal. It would also require the cooperation of the citizens/businesses for providing hotspots.
With "Cloud" computing becoming a bigger push, a highly reliable, secure, and speedy wi-fi would be needed.
Even though our need for wireless is increasing it also seems people are becoming more protective about it. I don't want anyone hopping on my router that's for sure!
what's next? government controlled mail?
Shit, stop being so paranoid.
First I've heard of this but if they introduced it in this country I'd be welcoming it.
Correct me if I am wrong but they aren't banning every other ISP from existing and you have to use the government scheme right? So you still have your beloved free market I assume?
I assume it is for those that don't have access to the web. The web is the great leveller, knowledge should be shared between all of us, not just to those who can afford the web. It's now cheap enough so the whole world should have access to it but you can't preach that until you bother empowering your own citizens.
Like I say, as much as I know about the programme is what has been put in this thread (which is nothing) so I may of totally missed the point but not everything the government does is not a bad thing. Unless they are Tory or GOP of course :p

How about for a paltry month's worth of wasted tax payers dollars on two wars that are going nowhere - we get wi fi towers/hotspots for the whole country
just imagine where this country would be if that's how things went....

my father in law is old, from a small town and he loves his high school football...
He was bitching how we are become socialist refering to our new health care law, and I asked him how he liked his socialist gov. ran high school football, then I told him our tax dollars should focus on education and let people pay for sports after school if they want it.
He could not believe what I was saying and he tried to explain to me how we needed high school football paid for from taxes.
I say wifi for all, and shit I might like this program that's why I put the question mark. but I lean toward thinking that with demand will come private, better ran supply.

If he's got problems with "socialism" he is welcome to relinquish his SS check - and his medicare and please stop supporting the socialist military.
Wi-Fi will become norm eventually - obviously there are hotter spots than other, public, private, corporate, govt, it's all gonna cross. Like I said - if true "Cloud" computing becomes a reality, the only way for it to succeed is to have a healthy, secure, powerful wireless network.
And protect the consumer - this kind of thing can get "expensive" very quick
I get what you mean now. I suppose it could be argued that porn shouldn't be allowed to pick up on these networks, then maybe gambling sites, then obviously wikileaks and those blogs about wikileaks. Oh and Domestic Terrorists obviously. And military blogs should be approved first...
where does it stop?
