Definitely a highlight. Lots of grit from MCA in those lines. Not sure if it's "bitchin" or what. Originally, I thought "pissin" but that can't be it. I'ma have a go at deciphering the lyrics when I have time tonight. This shit has me emotional today.

Yeah I heard "pass me the sample" which I thought was a really nice comment on making hip hop. But scalpel makes a lot more sense.:)

also on a seperate tangent. I'm pretty sure the vocoder in the hook is "You Can't Won't Stop" but I've been wrong about stuff before.

You can really tell from all songs we've heard from HSC that they were completely inspired by the Gala Event shows after TMU when they played their beat live and rapped on top of it (So Watcha Want, Flute Loop, Do It).

All these new songs are played live.. they went pretty fast back to studio after the tour to do the "TMU remixed" and probably ended up inspired to do that mostly live played record instead. That's the theory I had for a long time and this songs definitely confirms it more :D

Makes me wonder if the original plan was to tour playing the beat live as well..

The best part is that this is actually happening right now. We are so deprived of Beastie Boys song leaks and releases that it's even more awesome to hear one. Especially a single that dances on others' songs in awesomeness.

i have had a shite day at work, really busy, not been able to check on here till now. made my day. nice one.

i like it, although i hope its not best track on album but i think its a good pointer to the direction and i am very hopeful, sounds like they are enjoying themselves and i didnt always get that impression on TT5B.

Dope. Doesn't sound live. Sounds like they chopped and looped their own playing. Definately has a similar sound to the instruments and efx used in The Mix Up.

When you compare this to their previous singles (as in the singles that immediately preceded the album releases themselves...more specifically ones from before TT5B) it's kind of underwhelming. But I'm not mad at it. I'm sure it will grow on me.

yeah i agree, its not a big statement or big impact number but i think its more encouraging to hear that type of sound as opposed to one like TT5B, sounds more beastie like and i as i said i hope its a pointer to the sound of the rest of it

i can see what mickil is saying... the shit is still dope though(y) weird as hell(y)

its possible that this song is the single because it was the best one they could use when they had the opportunity to make a video with that giant list of actors? not because its the strongest track?

bands nowadays make records so they can make their living touring, they don't make a lot on album sales. so considering there probably won't be a tour, this album is pretty much a gift. could explain why so little has been put into promo? i can't understand why the track wouldnt be available for a $1 download, im pretty sure most people would buy it if that choice was made to be easy. BUT its cool that d put it up..

i have no idea how they would go about playing these songs live anyway

its cool that the song is out there now, but i STILL want to hear the album the way they and zdar intended, crystal clear sound. im definately buying this shit and bangin it on a good stereo asap

how many more albums till they don't owe capitol any more?

Thanks Mike for throwing it up on the main page. So what's the rest of the plan?

jayjacobson16
04-06-2011, 01:21 PM
I wonder what the second single will be if there is one cause TMR was the original first single but was probably intended to have the second single status. I hope there is another single to be released before the album comes out. I'm not expecting one though considering we have already heard so many songs from the album. Even if they are different in this version.

Even though it's been out for two years Lee Majors should be a single. That sounds like it could easily be on the radio. Just not on Swagg/Pop stations.

The tracks I'm most exited to hear based on title would probably be

Nonstop Disco Powerpack, Long Burn the Fire, Crazy Ass Shit.

I'm going to adore this album when I hear it.(y)

Nice question. I would like to pay for a .flac version of the track. Also I would be keen on paying for a 1080i HD downloadable version of a video. Five to eight dollars seems fair for both. Actually, I think a bonus dog with light eyes t-shirt would be fly as well for a total of 20 dollars.

MSN > CIO
-it's better than the 30s snippet lead on to....no surprise there!
-chorus could have been better...'PFYRTF' been there/done that!
-same doo-doo rhymes...carbon copy of BBITC and 25 other beastie trax!

-definitely agree with the post about the TMU influence...i love the beat, muzac, cowbell...the break's fresh!
-and this is why HSC2 will be much better than TT5B cuz they're doing the music.....sampling themselves ala CYH, IC but a different sound!
-if you put the lyrics/rhymin of LM over a regular breakbeat it's just another doo doo track...but the way they did it: A+

-i still feel that if this album dropped a few years ago MSN would not be a single let alone a lead off track!

LM: A+
HLSFY (numbers version that'll never be released): A+
PYB: A
TMR: B
BBITC: B-
MSN: B

get well yauch!

The Mix Up influence is almost stronger than the 'IC' thing people keep talking about since the break is long and live (ie a considerably longer sample of themselves - more musical) unlike anything on IC or CYH. It would be the equivalent of them rapping over large chunks of Futterman's or In 3s.

It was always meant to be the lead single, by the way. And yes, Yauch, hope you feel better soon breh.

EDIT: So fucking late for work listening to this hahaa

I have been everywhere today reading people’s thoughts on Make Some Noise and one thing I found out is that the majority who have been the most critical are the Beasties hardcore fans. But I am not saying that is bad because you know being a long time supporter I think you have that right to do that! Anyway my take on this is that when I listen to rap now it’s either tooooo cheesy or too violent. Beasties balance that. I don’t mind that it has a classic sound to it. It’s a new decade and each decade music changes and sometimes it brings old school back and sometimes it doesn’t. Luckily we have a band who stays true to hip hop. I mean aren’t a lot of rappers doing collabs with Justin Bieber? Shivers at the thought of where rap is today. Ha ha well I could be all alone here but oh well just my thoughts as of this moment!

Nice nod to Walk This Way in Ad-Rock's verse after the break.

It's so awesome to get to discover and dissect a new Beastie Boys song again.

It's going to be quite the moment when Yauch gets on stage again. You're gonna get goosebumps.

It's definitely different than anything out there. Yauch sounds great - I'd buy his record. But I find Mike's delivery annoying.

The chorus could have been better.

splendid. lovin' the universal appreciation for this jam around these parts. feels good. (y)

just some thoughts:

- i love that each bboy has gotten specific shout outs on this thread as to the strength of their lyricism on this joint, sounds like they're all on point
- wouldn't consider the drums a "sampling of themselves" so much as Mike played live and they just edited them here and there, particularly the fills
- definite TMU influence
- the kick is HUGE. hits really hard.
- maybe Yauch and Adrock are doing their own scratches again. love MMM to death, but that would be a really cool scenario too
- Thanks for the new sig, Darko. :)A Ted Danson mention and a cowbell solo: what more could you want from a Beastie Boys single?

To be fair I only said that in response to SirSkratch who claimed the whole thing is just samples and loops of themselves. I'm venturing that if they are samples, they're much longer than normal sections of music and hence more song-y than loop-y. See the break and the outro, could have been spliced in, could have been played live. Wahey minutiae

I've been listening to the track at work today, really digging it. Random thoughts, for anyone interested:

- I really like the style of their new stuff; rapping over instruments. I think it gives the songs a real kick which TT5B kind of lacked, and I think it helps take the songs into slightly weird directions, like the intro, outro, and bridge in Make Some Noise.

- MSN sounds really 70's. It could almost be the theme tune to a shaft-like 70's cop show. From TT5B onward the band seem to have become more and more nostalgic for the 70's, which is weird because they're more identified with the 80's.

- Rhyme highlights for me: Adrock rapping about seagulls and eagles, Mike D rhyming about Ted Danson, MCA explaining his brain surgery technique.

Why do some people say "keys"? I thought the main beat was Adrock on the guitar. Unless they chopped it and used a keyboard or something like that.

I loved this song from first listen, but the hook wasn't really doing it for me, now its growing on me too.

Seriously strong single.

in the clips, i originally suspected the main line was guitar, but i'm sure it's keys now.

sounds like a tone from a Moog Little Phatty, though considering the recent video of Adrock workin the Slim Phatty I would assume maybe its that. chained through a wah pedal and perhaps the maestro for that buzzy distortion?

who knows.

pretty sure the vocoder line is "dooon't stop", i second that notion.

really like the drum mix here. it's fat, it's dirty, and it's rollin

also, seein all this funky lingo goin on (synth line, breaks, modulations, bass punctuations, cowbell) makes the track very jammy and positive-vibed, and that style is all beastie no doubt about it
it's funky, lovable, juicy.. makes you wanna listen & enjoy it..
it's a great track :)

For the record I said

Dope. Doesn't sound live. Sounds like they chopped and looped their own playing. Definately has a similar sound to the instruments and efx used in The Mix Up.

To say I said "the whole thing is just samples and loops of themselves" is poor paraphasing. It's hard to tell but I gather they're some third party samples in there too. In any event, you guys are misreading my post and then disagreeing with your own misreading of what you thought I said.

I do think it's safe to say that you are not hearing a live jam session by the Beasties with them rapping over it. They might try to play em that way if they tour. It's a lot to bite off though . . .

To say I said "the whole thing is just samples and loops of themselves" is poor paraphasing.

Is it? Or is there some kind of cultural thing at work here? You said it doesn't sound live. It does (outside of the samples, which I too can hear). Moreso than So Watcha Want, Alright Hear This or even The Maestro. I should have guessed you were talking about every third bar only. As such I think it's pretty nice paraphrasing, to be honest.

Yes it would be too much to recreate live, I agree.

Now you're just confusing me dood. I think you're messing up your terminology. Live means played live without looping or sampling. The musician plays the shit and its not 2 or 4 or 8 or 16 bar loops, its played through from beginning to end. It's played and recorded and played back pretty much as it was recorded. Back in the old days they wouldn't even edit the shit in mastering. Miles Davis would record a whole album in a night and they'd just record and pretty much press it up. They are definately sampling chopping and looping in this track.

Even if you are looping your own live playing, you're still "sampling". "Sampling" does not mean that you use someone else's sounds. It' means that you record a sound and play it back. Sometimes you even loop it. Like you said, the beasties did lots of this in the Check Your Head era. They just samples shorter segments a lot of times.

Anyway, it sounds pretty clear to me that they're looping in this track even though they're using some longer loops. The instrument sounds sound a lot like the mix up sessions. Which is why I said it sounds like they sampled themselves and looped up segements. There are all sorts of other elements in there as well.

It may sound "live" to you because they're looping longer segments but it's looped, so it's not live. Lots of hip hop samples longer loop segments, it may not sound like that to you because sometimes the players are so good that you can't tell.

Wait, I'm not even sure why I'm writing all this. I stand by whatever it was I said the first time and not your interpretation of whatever it was I said.

Haha I knew you were too precious to let it go. I mean, who cares in the end? You misinterpreted what McDuff meant, which was what motivated by something I said and blah blah blah. You think I'm a complete idiot regarding the terminology, too. Nice. (y) It still sounds like it was played (largely) from beginning to end. Loops = repetition, and I'm not hearing a lot of it outside of the keys. That's why it sounds live to me. Sounds.
