So far I'm about twenty-five minutes into this thing and I can't imagine it going on for another 2.5 hours.
I'm suddenly resenting wanting to know all this pop culture stuff I should know but don't really.

I forced myself to watch it last year because so many of my friends rave about it. What a fucking terrible movie. Turn it off now.

i think there's a certain window of childhood for people to enjoy it. if you haven't seen it by 9 years old, it'll suck.
i watched it over 3 or 4 sessions a few years ago cos i couldn't sit through the whole thing. it sucks balls for grown ups.

That was my favorite movie when I was little. As an adult, it's cringeworthy.
A doe, a deer a FU people!
When I visited Salzburg I imagined the Von Trapp family running through the streets. I love Sound of Music, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Wizard of Oz and a bunch of other musical films.

this reply surprises me
what exactly is it that you people think makes it so terrible? and what else do you really expect from an adapted musical in the 60's?

You've got the orphaned virgin who marries the creepy old guy. You've got mischievious nuns. You've got Nazis without any real indication of how fucking scary they are. When I was a kid, I just liked the singing kids.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was another favorite of mine when I was a kid but it's actually pretty bad and overlong.
The thing was, when I was a kid, you couldn't throw a video in. It was an event when you saw a favorite movie. They re-released Sound of Music in theaters every so often. I had Sound of Music Dolls (only Maria and three of the girls though -- Gretel was the cutest). And it Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was rarely played -- not like Wizard of Oz that was on TV at least once a year.
I wore out three copies of the Sound of Music soundtrack by the way. I apparently played it over and over when I was a tot.

The puppet show is still classic BTW. And the making play clothes out of curtains.

i still watch the wizard of oz every now and then and it's still freaking awesome. the songs sucked in the sound of music. as does the plot. there's no magic. it's a three and a half hour long episode of the nanny.

Supposedly The Sound of Music is based on a true story? That is, at least, according to my girlfriend. I suppose I am on the internet and I could look that up...
If it is though, I seriously doubt all those people randomly broke into song together.
Oh, and I didn't absolutely hate it... but I'm sure not in any rush to watch it again.

Even as a kid, I didn't love it. It was alright. Mrs. marsdaddy loves it, to this day.
A few friends visited Salzburg and took some kind of tour which they said was awesome. Of course, that was after they visited Amsterdam so...

We're loving The Sound of Music in this house these days. I love the whole "You Are Sixteen" scene in the garden, it's just beautiful. We're big on old musicals in general right now - The King and I is a big favorite; also Oliver, The Wizard of Oz, and even West Side Story, which I would have thought M is a little young for, but she loves the music and the choreography. She walks around the house trying to snap her fingers going "Boy, boy, crazy boy."
