View Full Version : The Santigold Song will Dominate the Summer

BeastieAlbum07

Each time I hear the :30 preview for Don't Play no Game that I Can't Win, I get the instant vibe that this song will absolutely dominate the summer, for everyone.

Remember the song, Paper Planes, by MIA where the Beasties appeared in the video, and how it dominated the summer?

I get the same vibe around this one... I would love it if this happened.

I am cool with any SONG dominating the summer just as long as it’s one of the Beasties. I am so tired of that blackandyellow turn it up DJ crap. New decade needs new music imo and the BB’s can change hip hop again.

BB’s can change hip hop again.

Hip-Hop doesn't need changing. You just need to find better Hip-Hop to listen to.

Just because it's mainstream doesn't mean it's great. There is a ton of great Hip-Hop going right now!

Hot Sauce will dominate 2011 not just one song, one season. Maybe even the decade. (imo)

thanks for the youtube vid!
first time I have heard the pre-views.

They are positioned very good right now from a marketing point. classic, fresh, linked with Hollywood.

HSC is a masterpiece created by 3 musicians who have poured three decades of experiences into a flow of sonic bliss to wash the grim off our sometimes filthy society.

Why can't this be their best album yet?

I like a lot of artists that are not on the radio but it would be nice to hear them on the radio. I am just tired of club rap. It's just overkill for me. And really I don't have a lot of time to go on a mad hunt for music, maybe one day. ;)

i really hope it will be the single, and get a video! santigold is so good, and together with the beasties on their track, i thought it could be something great, and it is! the snippet sounds world class !! i can't wait the album for that one song alone, not to mention the other 15

Santigold just released her own single today: http://lifeandtimes.com/american-dreaming.

Maybe since their schedules seem to be lining up we will see a single release for Don't Play No Game.

is no one else feeling this one?

sideman sidenote:

reading the liner notes I noticed the saxman Neal Usatin got credits under sidemen next to King of Lunch The Rapper Mike D.

Usatin was of course the lead editor for AIFST, Fight For Your Right Revisited, Gunnin For That #1 Spot, A Day in the Life of Nathaniel Hornblower, and almost every video from TT5B and the Mix Up if I'm not mistaken...

some bands make a living at trying to prefect a reggae'ish type of sound like this.

the beasties make a sublime (no pun intended) song on this effort in a genre that is not their main type of music.

I doubt it will dominate. The Beastie Boys are a cult band now. Too many kids listen to bullshit rap and don't care about 3 white dudes. HSC2 will NOT debut at #1 for sure. Adele most likely sold a billion more CDs this week as Now 38 probably did. Jennifer Lopez also has a new CD out and with her being on American Idol, is sure to sell a ton. It can't be their best album yet because they released "Paul's Boutique", "Check Your Head" & "Hello Nasty" already.. :/

Well this is just something "we'd like to see happen." I'd say request it on your radio if you have the time because that seems to help create buzz when fans get together and do stuff like that.

Nah not even; it's a tight song that outdoes both the Mix Up and the proposed Re-mix Up in one fell swoop. Feel bad for ya if you're not enjoying it. Hip-hop conventions are like blinkers, man. This is just a good tune.

these songs would bury this record if they were pushed as the singles. they are the definition of album cuts.

regardless of whether you enjoy the song or not, I can't believe how difficult it is for some people to see why this song is the obvious single choice. this is industry 101 here.

The only reason it surprises me as a single choice is because they usually like to play their singles live but even if they happened to play a show with Santigold I don't really see it working live. I really hope the next single is Say It or Here's a Little Something For Ya

respect, but consider this: if you look at the rest of their single choices in the past, it's always the (most) marketable choice, this album just happens to have a more marketable song than usual up for selection. know what i mean? the glaring exception IMO would probly be intergalactic as the lead single for HN, but that was predictably followed up by Body Movin. If a pop-oriented song is there to be pushed, that's what the label is gonna push, and DPNG is that song. (plus Santigold touts a well-established fan-base at this point to add to the mix as well)

also, while the beasties may have a bit more promotional clout with the label than alot of other artists by way of say, it's still the label's money being invested thus their final decision. especially as the record industry declines more and more, the label is going to be more and more strategic and frugal with what they choose and what they think is going to make stronger rounds.

Genius... no sarcasm. This is it exactly IMO. I don't like to editorialize, but the only song I would more quickly skip on this record is The Bill Harper Collection. I don't hate the original, but I don't really care for it. I don't hate the ML remix, but I really don't care for it either.

Honestly, I feel lucky to get more singles off of the album. (Technical Point here. Often people have interpreted "I feel lucky to get more singles off of the album" to mean "you should feel lucky to get more singles off of the album", but I am only speaking for myself here). They have put out LMCA, TMR, HALSFY, MSN, BBITC and now DPNGTICW as singles associated with this release. The other side of the coin is that it sucks that instead of getting to hear LBTF or SI toyed with for remixes I get remixes of the song I least enjoyed.

Sure, sure I kind of agree. But, somebody else on these boards said it's their favorite line on the album because it's delivered with so much utter seriousness. I hadn't thought of it that way before. I kind of like the line when I think about it that way.

You're spending an awful amount of energy hating on this song. I think it's cool that it's so different an experimental. especially as their singles are concerned. It deviates from the you take 4 bars, I'll take 4 bars etc etc style the radio hits have used since 1992. And now we have two pretty bad ass remixes. Have you heard the z-trip one yet? it's nuts.

Try being happy that they have a 2nd single at all, and put some positive vibes out that it'll do well and they get to put out another single. Preferably one you enjoy.

Yeah, I disagree w/ the theory that they were trying to make a single from the get go on this song. But simply as a track on the album, I love it and think it's one of the more interesting tracks they have done. Even if the lyrics are kind of corny, but really they aren't that bad. aside from that tartar sauce line.

I know 'singles associated with this release' has been quite carefully worded, but I am not in the least bit surprised they are putting out another single. I'd expect another after DPNGICW. Make Some Noise is the only 'proper' single that's been released. A few 7"s or 12"s don't really count in my mind. And... HALSFY?

I agree, that's why I said it was the perfect one for release right now. I'd hate to see one of their good live rap tunes get released with no band to back it up.... I am actually hoping they don't release anything after this one until they can be together again. We have the album, that's enough for me.
