so the lineup has been announced. gotta say its relatively underwhelming apart from a few biggies.

Very interested to see the Wu Tang Clan. I dont know much past 36 chambers, liquid swords and tical. Anyone recommend any later stuff please?

It's a massively shitty lineup for a festival as big as Glasto. I'd expect a line up that wank for some Radio 1 hosted bollocks, but I'm struggling to find more than about 20 acts I like out of that whole list - half of those I'm umming and ahhing about.

yeah its not the best but last few times i have been i have just ended walking round the whole site getting bits of everything. loads of surprises. i'm only really bothered about the chemicals and everyone else i really want to see is on friday night. i'll still have a good time

yep

besides from some great jungle/dnb headliners, all there really is are primal scream, bb king, paul simon, wu-tang, kool & the gang, dj shadow, terry reid, and robyn hitchcock is okay. very underwhelming, and a shit load of trendy indie hipster doofus bands.

i will be trying to see all of these and the chemical brothers and i'd say all that would be worth the price of a ticket. IT'd cost a lot more to see all of these gigs separately.

If i can get all hippy for a minute, glasto really isnt just about the main stages.

That's true, but if you're just going to wallow around in a bunch of muddy fields for a couple of days, only listening to obscure funk-folk bands then you could probably just go to a few smaller gigs around your hometown/city instead and save yourself a few hundred quid for what's basically the same experience only with less mud.

Part of the price we pay for festivals is for the chance to see many big-name, good-quality live acts all in the same place.

I have seen Rage Against The Machine headline at T. That was truly a one-off experience worth the entry fee. You couldn't pay me to watch Coldplay, U2 or Beyonce. I'd rather cough up my lungs and use them to fashion an axe with which to bludgeon myself to death.

;)

Wow, look at all the old acts, and they weren't even good old acts. Melanie? Wow.

BTW, I'm seeing Paul Simon next month at a small club. I am not a fan but I'll see anyone who plays that club. I have a difficult time imagining him on a main stage at a festival.

thats pretty crappy for a big festival.

I'm going again. I'm missing Bestival this year, which definitely has the best line-up - again.

Don't know why no one else has responded to this. Huge news, I've been wanting to go to Glasto for a while and this tips the scales for me.

Check out Ironman, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Tical 0: The Prequel, Bobby Digital In Stereo & Supreme Clientele.

Cinematic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sfn5WMHC0T0)

Emotional (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YvVdVNNiVU)

Familiar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4QMuCEkgLo) (in both senses of the word: Dhani Harrison plays guitar along with John Frusciante)

Fresh (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6epTUBtiWw)

As you can tell, Ghostface has put out the most quality material but there's a lot of good shit to discover. Get those albums I mentioned.

I'd never go to Glastonbury because there's too many people and tents.too much exposure to too many people is bad news

thanks padster.

i presume they would do some sort of best of set, most bands do at glasto as opposed to hawking new albums.

Have they got enough good stuff to do a set of songs that are actually listed as being by wu-tang? Or is everyone going to do a turn of their solo? who has seen them live?

and freebasser, its not going to be muddy.

well i went and it was pretty good. not best ever but one of the best.

I didnt see any of the three headliners.

my highlights were:

Kool & The Gang - what a show

Wu-Tang Clan - Yes, i wasnt expecting them to be that raw, i thought there would be more theatre or spectacle but it was just straight up hip hop and it was outstanding.

Chemical Brothers - awesome, some of their older stuff has been freshened up.
Primal Scream - Yes, did all of screamadelica then did a 3 rock song encore.
Jimmy Cliff - another great showman.
Chase & Status -brilliant, they are going to be huuuugge. i mean i know they quite big but i think could go supernova.

The only shit things were Paul simon (mega disappointing) and that it rained for first three days.

I thought it was good. I, like Guy, didn't see any of the headliners and thought the Chemical Brothers show was incredible.

I also really liked SBTRKT's live set (stood next to members of The xx and James Blake before Jamie xx's performance) and thought QOTSA were as rocking as ever.

Battles were rather disappointing.

It seems like a year ago now but it was only last weekend!

i know, tell me about it. Already thinking i should have seen more but i saw shitloads. I saw more bands on the friday when it was pissing down than i did for all of the 2010 festival.

Ah well, only 700 odd days till the next one

Well there was me saying the line up was shit but actually there was loads there i'd like to have seen. Doubt if i'd have bothered with the headliners either, maybe a bit of Beyonce, certainly not the other two. Would love to see chase and status amongst about a zillion others. What a fucker it rained so much, i just always got put off by the size of it, Bestival is as big as i like it really and it's pretty small for such a great festival. Did feel a slight twinge of jealousy when the sun was out on Sunday.

tbh i've been about 9 or 10 times and its only stayed dry once so i kinda knew it was going to happen. I just dont like to tempt fate.
the mud kind of makes for a better atmosphere in a way, some people just find it harder. I think i did more walking than i ever have this year so rain doesnt put me off.
it didnt actually rain that much. pissed it down wednesday morning and was just constant drizzle on friday but not offensive rain. Thats worst , when you are trying to watch a band and the wind and rain is right in your face. That didnt happen, it was ok. it was when it got hot and turned the mud sticky that it was worst, like walking on the moon.
i saw some of the best things i have ever seen this year and some of the worst. The nobhead quota was definitely up but glasto is so big that there are plenty of places to get away from all that. Might even take the kids next time.
I have thought about bestival but not sure how family orientated it is?

gbsuey
07-06-2011, 05:24 AM
I wouldn't take my kids there, it's not all that family friendly. There's a family field and a few things for kids but i go for the music and would find it pointless to go all that way to miss most of it. I think that's why they started Camp Bestival. I took my boys there last year and because the music wasn't great it was fab to just spend the weekend doing stuff for the kids. There's plenty for adults who can organise a bit of childcare between them, but being on my own with them it's not going to happen. We did watch some music but they're not too passionate about it yet so soon got itchy feet to go see what else we could do. Was very happy they chose Dan le Sac v Scroobius Pip over Mr fucking Tumble.

Guy Incognito
07-06-2011, 11:13 AM
yeah i think we are gonna have at least one extra pair of adult hands when we go to glasto. Although its the probably the best setup fpr families, its so fucking enormous, just a bit worried about losing them. And then get some sort of mobile bed i can pull about so that i dont have to listen to headliners in a tent!

At Camp Bestival loads of families had those red wagons to pull the kids in, some looked amazing done up like a bed with fairy lights strung around them. Although Sunny was 5 and it's not that huge he would have been very happy to snuggle up in one. On the sunday afternoon he was so knackered he fell asleep on the floor in the middle of a crowd watching bmx display thing. But the kind of asleep that babies do, flat on his back with his arms up. Quite a few friends of mine go and work at Glastonbury and all the kids generally have an amazing two week holiday, i'm just not brave enough to do it really and the sheer size has always put me off. Probably said this before but the only time i went was years ago when i was a smelly hippy traveller and we lived not far away so parked a way away and legged it across fields and scaled the fence, didn't stay long, just had a mootch about and went home. But we sat on a hill overlooking the site when The Orb were playing Little Fluffy Clouds, was quite amazing to have that drifting out over the hills. It'll be something your kids never forget i'm sure.

I love Bestival but Glastonbury kills it on so many levels. Yeah it's big, but the crime rate is astonishingly low considering it's practically the same size as a small city. The atmosphere is so much better as well. Every time I've been to Bestival, people have had possessions stolen from tents around me, and I suppose I've been lucky not to have been targeted but it's very rare to hear of anything like that in Glasto. I loved every minute of it this year but I put way too much emphasis on catching the bands. If I go in 2013, I think I'll try and find all the quirky bits to the festival and check out more of the site, rather than stick to watching bands all day (although that's my job!).

it was 6 years before i really investigated the quirkier bits and this year i managed to mix it up so i got a bit of everything, saw about 20/25 acts and still managed to bimble about and see weird shit as well

theft was definitely up, lots of reports where we camped of wallets being nicked and tents raided, i've not known it as bad since the big fence went up. There was even a fight at the stone circle, unbelievable. never heard of anyone fighting for yonks there

Really? That's a bit of a surprise. Perhaps I camped in a quieter part of the site. I spent a fair bit of time in the press tent over the weekend and we were fed crime stats from Avon and Somerset Police, which stood at just over 100 arrests by Sunday afternoon, but perhaps there were more incidents/arrests not included in the official figure? I did encounter a lot of drug pushers in the dance arena, and it still puzzles me how the hell they get in with all that gear.

Guy Incognito
07-10-2011, 01:00 AM
yeah i think arrests were low but i spoke to people on our field who mentioned it, saw evidence of discarded wallets, heard complaints of people had their tents raided. Its a big topic on some of the festival forums. I have been going their for years and havent heard this amount of stuff about theft ever. Maybe the thieves were good enough to not get caught or people couldnt be arsed reporting it. Think about it, would you trudge in that fucking mud to go and report your wallet missing or would you just ring your bank and cancel your cards, ask your mates for a borrow and open a cider instead?
