View Full Version : Beastie Boys show @ 9:30......Sucked

What a LET DOWN. Not sure who to blame. Personally, I think it was a pre planned corporate radio scam. Doors open at 6:30....show starts at 8:30....or so you think. HFS announces at 8:20 that the show will not start till 11:15 because of travel problems with the Boys. Hmmmmmm. Well the show was a win your way in, so the 9:30 Club was not making any money at the door. So what is a great way to offset the money lost at the door? Try to keep a crowd of 1,000 people drinking in your club for 4hrs and 45min waiting for the Boys. All the bar sales will surely offset the money lost at the door. What a great idea. Originally when you entered one person was issued an arm bracelet and their guest just walked in. Isn't it very INTERESTING that on the way out the 9:30 Club just happened to have 500 extra braclets to issue to the people leaving the venue after it was announced the show would not start till 11:15. They knew that shit was coming. The 9:30 planned the whole thing with HFS. Even the morning DJ on HFS said this morning he knew at 7:20 the show was not going to start till 11:15. So why did they wait an hour till tell everyone??? So you drink and run up a fat tab!
The Boys were great as usual......when they finally got on. But a 50min set is weak. Go on as scheduled at 8:30 and play your 50min set....FINE. Make people wait and extra 3hrs to see you and then play only a 50min set.....GARBAGE. That shit was so planned!

I heard the flight got cancelled due to bad rain which I don't doubt considering the weather that suddenly dumped on DC. I got drenched after I got off work. I don't think that was planned. Perk up a bit, dude. At least you got to see them in such a small venue for 50 minutes. I would have loved to be there, even with the delay.

I feel very fortunate. Just feel a little weird about the way the evening played out.

was a great show. you'll probably never see them in such a small venue ever again. be happy. what's 3 hours after waiting 6 years since the last tour?

btw, i've never heard of such a reputable club and a reputable band being so shady. afterall, Mike D did apologize for the delay. you think he would've played second fiddle to HFS/9:30 management to cover some sort of "scam." i don't buy it. besides, event planners always have extra bracelets/posters/crap for the fans. at least they let people leave and come back. you could've walked down U street and picked any bar to drink at, not just the 9:30 club bars.

There was no scam. I talked to several HFS guys and this was real. The weather was mad crazy and I was even late on the Metro coming there because it was so wild. Nothing like those southeast dc t-storms.

HFS even got knocked off the air a few times from it.

C'mon, no scam here, just bad circumstances. Just be thankful the show wasn't cancelled, which would have been much, much worse!

Let's try to stop with all the conspiracy theories around here. It's making this community look a little less credible.

That was some funny shit last night when they took the 99.1 banner down from behind the stage before the Beasties came on. Every one started cheering. Makes the people realize how much that station sucks even if they did bring the Beasties to town.

but you know those bad circumstances I thought turned into good karma.

Good karma got me into the show.
Good karma brough the Beasties to DC.
Good karma delayed the show--little biased on weather---I work for NOAA (http://www.noaa.gov),
which in turn good karma gave everyone free pizza and vitamin water
Good karma gave us collectors memorabilia (wristband, commemorative ticket, poster and sticker
Good karma introduced me to some new cool friends.

In essence, good times.

Well, I don't think it was a scam. Otherwise they would have had the kitchen stocked to sell! :) The pizza was free? I ate beforehand down the street and didn't need it. Free beer would have been better, but a great gesture. Showed up at 8:20 right when the crush of people leaving was max and was WTF?

It's just too bad. Right when I was getting amped it ended. I'd like to know the details. Can the club not play live acts past midnight per something with the city? I would have happily stayed another hour. I also would have happily left and come back weeks later for a "full" show, but that's just me. Can the webmaster give us the original setlist so we know what we missed?

I'm thrilled to have seen them at 9:30. But the short setlist was on par with the other two times I've seen them at outdoor multiact gigs. So that was a major boohoo cry. Like the postshow ticket tho. I was wondering what I would have as a memento. Upon entering (tickets.com), neither I or my guest got anything at all. They just checked me off the list and security said don't use my phone to take pictures. Tho I swear I saw some guy up front sporting a miniDV...

Pizza. A big Dominoes order came in and went to the righthand bar (facing stage). Then a bit later a Papa John's (I think) order came in and went to the Food Food ordering window. I just assumed they were selling cause the kitchen ran out of food because it wasn't stocked for 3 hours of people sitting around. But if it was free, that is pretty cool. I'd still like to know exactly *why* the show had to end. Part of 9:30's city use permit for shows? Would seem stupid to have to end at midnight, but because it was a weeknight?? Who knows...

Well I left to go to that little morrocan joint up the road. But they brought in over 200 pizza's and were giving them out to who ever was inside. I was full when the second 100 came in. The water is cool, I drink it at work everyday.

And yes outside you could get a sticker (Beasties), commemortive poster (the one HFS is having a contest for on the site), and your special "ticket".

And my bartender, Leon or something, was ultra cool... not only did he store my umbrella, but my tab was very hooked and he even bought me a few drinks.

Attitude is everything... patience is a gift.

dude, that was a press guy. there were a bunch of them throughout carrying mini recorders or cameras. i had one by me for a bit. i treid to make room for any legal or illegal people taping or taking pics becasue i figured maybe theyd be posted online and we all would benefit from it. dude by 'taking it out' you desearved the karma that came your way. maybe the show ending so quickly was a result of what you brought upon us. instead of us all getting to see what he recorded we are all out now. thanks dude. youre a real jackass. im surprised youre proud of it. if i was you i wouldnt tell anyone.

plus what was up with all the people boo-ing a few times? i didnt get that. we were all lucky to be there and boo-ing them isnt gonna make them want to do soemthing like that again much less come back to dc. i thought it was way super uncool of the crowd.

be appreciative. it was an awesome experience. even though there were bumps, it was memorable and got me siked up even more. we were lucky to be there. not everyone in the world is out to gyp ya. sometimes things just happen. stop your complaining everyone!! im sure there were plenty of other wishing they were there instead.

to the the beasties: thanks a lot for coming and putting on a show for us all. it was great!! please come back and do it again!! it was def worth waiting all these years to see yall again!! yall rocked and i wish i could do it all over again!! thanks!!!!

Well its not my place to speak for the reason why... as I am not an official representative of any party, however I was told the reason, by someone of that nature. Essentially, it was because the set-time. Not the fault of HFS or 9:30 club rules. I have been to shows that have gone on later than midnight at the 9:30.

One more thing I think needs to be said, and I think "Video Mike" will back me up on this one......

The manner in which tickets were given out, ya know, you had to win them.
Well, I think that situation kinda affected the overall energy of the crowd. Let me try to explain....I spoke to alot of really nice people that were not big fans. They thought it would be cool to go and they won tickets. I was up front at this show and have been up front at many others, when I looked back into the balcony several times the people were just kinda chill. I was a little shocked. Having been to several shows in bigger arenas and the 9.30 club I have seen much better energy. Off course down in the front was different, but as I have previously posted there were idiots down there to. You could just kinda tell some people were there just to say "We saw the Beasties". I'm not saying that all people were not hardcore fans because clearly some were just as I am. But lets face it. If the tickets would have gone on sale like a normal show and there were scalpers every where, the energy would have been a little better. This is not a complaint post, it is just an observation.
Oh and one more thing about the rude Beastie Chic's, did anyone see the little "I love N.Y." chics. They thought they were models with their matching T-shirts. They tried to bogart the front more than once. I jacked em. They weren't gettin' by me.
Hey Video Mike what was up with the dude in the blue smok and the hair net and glasses? That guy looked liked MCA. He seemed like a hardcore fan!

vindictivimmune
06-19-2004, 12:50 PM
Since I was up the in balcony, trying to represent my energy, I was hoping it would spread. Since I was also close to the VIP area, most people around me were probably close to my age and composed drinkers. That being said, just because there is not a lot of outward energy being expressed, does not deminish the fact they are not a fan. I mean I was jumping and dancing around at some times, but also at times, I was just wanting to try to focus on the music and drink my drink. I think this has become a trend for me at shows as I get older, I can enjoy the shows on another level. And since those surrounding me were mostly in their late 20's - early thirties... I think they feel the same way.

Also I believe had the tickets gone on sale, maybe a wider demographic of fans would have been representing. I did see a sea of white men in the crowd. Good for me, as I am now single... having an opportunity to meet someone, bad as those people who thought there was no chance to get in, who are fans, probably detterred from the thought of outside waiting to get in... weather probably turned some people away from doing that too.

As for the guy in the scrubs, I saw him from behind. If he really looked like MCA, I would not be able to tell. But if he did, rrrrrrrrarrrrwwwwrrrr... just kidding. He was probably like 20. Too young for me. I am a little biased to MCA, my last boyfriend, whom I was with forever... bears a strong resemblance. He is also a fan, but I guess was not able to make it in.

DYNO-MITE-

I musta missed that dude, but....

I agree with your observation re: fans up front. Many we're hardcore fans, many more were lucky mofos who got in. either way, when we're all at a show, I know that these so called other fans wouldnt let me ruin m y experience. I was stuck at one point between 2 fat guys who wanted to do nothing more than just squeeze me out. Whatever. I slide back an extra foot, but my concentratyion is in one place...THE STAGE WHERE THE BEASTIE BOYS ARE PLAYING.

Thats it. My own expeiernce was chaneling my lover for the BBoyts on stage, and them sending the energy right back. No drunken whores, annoying fat guy, or quasi fan could get in the way of me screamin out lyrics, jumpin up and down, and enjoying myself see the Beasties Right Here Right Now ;)

Pizza!?!? When did that come in? I left to go to a ghetto carry out place for 30mins. I never saw any free pizza.

It sucked to wait and to have some sweaty idot in front of me wipping his arms all over the place (I was in the front 1/3 of the floor). The concert was great, my first time to see the beasties live.

How long does a Beastie Boys concert go for usually? I'd be really pissed off if I payed to see someone and they only went for 50 minutes. Especially for the Beastie Boys to only go for 50 minutes. These guys have been around for ages and all they can pull off is a 50 minute show. I spose they couldn't go for too long due to their late arrival. So when a Beastie Boys concert goes as planned how long does it go for??

Yeah Mike, I'm with ya. A couple of times my wife thought I was not enjoying the show, But I told her that I just love to watch them, their performing, expressions and stuff. I have seen them 7 or 8 times. So as I get older I just love to watch them. I'm older and I have done the whole jumping around crazy thing during a show. I could just stand there and watch in amazement for hours. I'm like a junkie staring a bowl of crack. Hard to explain. Anyway, my observations were only that.....by no means did any one ruin the show for me. I was just shocked at the nerve of some of the chics there and a little shocked the energy level seemed low behind me. It was an older crowd, which is a good thing. That probably explains it.

Yay! I can finally post!

I have been a huge Beasties fan since I was a kid, but I had never gotten to see them live. I don't care if I would have had to wait for another 3 hours...I still would have stayed, regardless of how short their set was. I feel really lucky that I got tickets at all! (y)

I took my best friend with me and we met some really cool people in line that we hung out with during the wait...everyone took turns buying beers, so it passed the time. For the most part everyone seemed really nice, aside from the really drunk people that were standing near us and being kind of irritating.

We were down in the front for the first couple songs, but then we decided to move back after some big guy who should not have been jumping around the way he was smashed my friend into the person in front of her and she got a fat lip. I got tired of trying to shove him off her (we are both kinda small girls, so there was only so much that we could do) so we decided to actually ENJOY the show from a little farther back.

Overall I had a really fantastic time! The whole thing was just kinda surreal to me....you know, finally seeing artists that I have loved forever performing some of my favorite songs and me being that close to them. (y) (y)

to anyone curious to the curfew for the club.....naaah the 9:30 doesnt have one, i spent most of the day outside talking to the big dude with tats [Josh], who is in charge of security and almost eveyrthing else at the club.....he informed me [right after the announcement that the boys would be late] that to not worry about the show being forced to end early...it would go for as long as the boys wanted. and AWOL had the setlists taped to the floor LONG before the boys got there, the setlist was already set, and they didnt fool around with making it any shorter

on a side note...PEACE TO ALL THE FATHERS UP IN HERE!
just spent an awesome afternoon with my pops, bought him NE Patriot tickets for an ESPN sunday night game....word.

Regardless of the circumstances, the show was great. How many people get the opportunity to see a show like that. I had a great spot on the balcony near the railing with a view and the people near me were all really into the music. Regardless of whatever happened, it was extremely cool of the Beastie Boys and Mix Master Mike to make it there. To the four of them and to the countless, nameless other people who help make the music, the shows and the website great -- THANK YOU.

I saw a lot of things in the crowd near the stage that seem like they are ways to NOT make a show fun. For example, if you keep trying to get near the stage and it takes two people to keep you off of the stage, that can't be safe. And if security tells you to move, move. If they say stop, stop. One guy got arrested because he refused to give over a camera phone and tried to run away.

If one of the Boys does not shake/slap your hand, then don't keep trying to stick your hand in his face. Even worse -- don't keep trying to get in the way or in their faces. And don't start fighting. Or running over people to get into a better position.

No matter what the circumstances, we were lucky to be present at a Beastie Boys show in a club. Remember that.

Yeah, this is what I do too. I'm one of their hugest fans ever, yet I have a serious problem with crowds. I get panicky and stressed, and mosh pits are the epitomy of idiocy in my generation. Yeah man! I'm having so much fun I gotta SHOVE PEOPLE! I don't care if you do have a lot of energy, mosh pits are retarded. Dance, jump around, scream, whatever - KEEP IT TO YOURSELF because other people don't enjoy spiked bracelets slashing their cheeks (which yes, I've seen).

I usually just grab myself a spot away from people and start screaming the lyrics and dancing by myself cuz I keeps it real. (y)

So this was my first live show and I worked my ass off for those tickets. I got mine from being on TV. I tried last Monday and was kicked off the set by the TV guy. There were 6 of us there and only one of us actually got on TV good enough to count as a win. So I had to try again on Wednesday....not to mention the hours spent trying to be caller 9. I don't listen to the radio often so it was painful not playing my CD's for all of that time. Well after a lot of back and forth with the station....my best friend and I got a cameo. They did a little interview and voila! We raced home, grabbed the tape and headed to the radio station. The weird thing was, after confirmation that we won...we still had this need to be caller 9 so we could get more friends in. Anyway we got to the 930 club and waited in the rain, no umbrella, white T-shirts. Guess I should have paid attention to the forecast but I was too psyched about anything other than getting to the 930 Club. So they were late. Really all that meant to us is that we were going to have to guard the prime real estate we THOUGHT we had near the front for 3 more hours. TV station hunted us down for another interview...that was cool, but man I suck on TV....I look like a deer in headlights! Pizza was great. DIdn't really drink b/c that means bathroom trips and the possiblility someone tried to squirm into my spot. I saw some posts regarding what the audience looked like. WHat in the hell is a beastie fan supposed to look like? When I told my coworkers I was headed to the concert they were surprised....I guess b/c I don't look like a beastie fan???? I never had a physical image of a beastie fan in my mind, so I thought that was just really interesting. I am your late 20's professional....devoted b-girl of around 18 or so yrs....I can be that "sorority girl" or I can throw on my sneakers, T, and jeans and show up for the most awesome concert ever. OK, enough of that.

SO what I noticed about the crowd was it was WAY too wild in the area of my "prime real estate". I had to bail and move back. Typically I am always in the front of any venue....and I can handle some rough bands, but I felt like the b-boys show was too much and I was surprised. I couldn't breathe..and too many sweaty drunks were up in my face. ANyway I moved back and enjoyed the show from the front of the bar. I should have been there the whole time b/c I could actually dance, listen and watch. I think watching them was the best. They were amazing.

The shows was handsdown incredibly amazing. But why didn't they say good night? Hell I didn't even know the show was over. I turned around to fill my cup with water and they were gone. Is that there "M O"? Sisnce I have never seen them live, thought maybe not saying goodbyew might be their thing.

I dont know why people are complaining, the show was fucking great. It took me soooo long to get tickets though...i really didnt think i was not going to be able to go. Me and my best friend are totally in love with the beasties and they are our fav band so when we heard that they were doing a free show for hfs we freaked out. We tried to call in forever....literally forever....and we never got through to hfs even though w had about 10 of our friends call for us too. So after many failed attempts of calling in and through Ebay (we were willing to pay up to $1500 for two tix) i found out that if i got on tv with a sign i could win the contest that way and after going down to two tv stations and spending two days on the phone with 6 other tv stations I was so upset because no one would let me get on camera for even a second. At this point it was like 4 days before th show and me and my friend were freaking out because we still had no tix and 99.1 was bragging on the radio how much of a great show it was going to be and how they were almost out of tickets...it was pissing us off so badly and the fact that most of the people who won didnt even sound like they wanted to go they were just like "whatever" when they found out they won. By then we were out of ideas and we didnt think of how else we could get tickets until it dawned to me that i work as kings dominion as a costumed character. So i went into work talked to a few people and was able to spend a whole day filming Scooby doo, spongebob, patrick, and the rugrats dance to ch-check it out and it was hillarious! my friend back home said he would edit it for me and make it look real good and then our plan was to go down to the station and be like fuck the contest, look what we made! but like everything else, we were screwed because my friend that was going to edit it TAPED OVER IT. So, after a swift and hard kick i gave him to the balls me and my friend that was trying to go with me to the concert left and we pretty much accepted defeat...of course we were still going to the concert but we were just going to wait outside the club and just listen :(
But the day of the show we got there around five with everyone else lining up and we just stood in front of the front gate of the 930 club and just stood there. Even when it started rain we stayed there. Even when we reaaalllly had to pee, we stayed there. Even when the beasties said they were going to be late, we stayed there. After 6 hours in the same spot and many failed attempts of trying to find someone who would sell us their bracelet (by this time it was 11:10) a lady from inside the club finally walked out to us and asked us "do you guys want to buy tickets?" After the multiple orgasms we experienced we ran to the ticket booth she pointed to and we were able to get in for $15, i guess some people might have left after they heard the show was going to be delayed. We immediately pushed ourselves to the front and had the greatest time ever. that, my friends, is called devotion.

THE END

yah it was a bitch trying to get to see the boys but it paid off in the end. the only complaint i have of the show are the dumbass people in the front who were complaining about people jumping around! well WTF do you expect if you are in the front AND on the floor?! u have about 500 people behind you that want to have a good time and would KILL to get closer. I guess a lot of people that were there didnt go to shows a lot because they were really being pussies about people moving around and having a good time. anyways i wrote my essay for the nite.......

You can have a good time without punching someone in the face because you are so excited about seeing a band. And noone from the back was shoving forward....I know because we moved back a little after my friend got a fat lip.

Maybe you or your friend were the one who gave it to her...who knows...but we have gone to lots of shows in our lives and not been injured by idiots throwing their fists around.

OMG I LOVE THE BEASTIES SO MUCH I FREAKIN NEED TO PUNCH A STRANGER!!!!! (n)

Word...I have no problem with having a good time. But there were some people there that were like FREAKING out (ie - dude that smashed my friend's face).

I probably could have stayed up there longer...I really like being that near the stage, but I know she was pissed and I was about to have a heatstroke.

yeah bro smile!!! I would have loved to have been at that small venue. I saw them at the Mt. View, CA show at Shoreline in the nose bleed section.
I wouldn't of mind to of waited that long for them in a small venue drinking beer being merry. Plus, have you checked out their touring schedule, its brutal. Give em some slack -Peace out!!! (y)

(we were willing to pay up to $1500 for two tix)

Glad to hear that you did not have to pay that much to get in. I was fortunate enough to win tickets but my guest bailed on me. I decided after A LOT of second guessing that I was going to go to the show and hook a fellow fan for free. I had to really think hard about it on the whole trip into the city. I hooked a really greatful fan up and in turn he hooked me with $20 for beer (unsolicited).

As it turns out I guess good Karma was on my side. The stupid HFS DJ did not write my info down when I won. I was not on the list. After several minutes of pleading my case they gave me a wrist band anyway.

The Boys where on point and I was glad to share my good forture with a fellow fan.

I waited up front the entire time till the show started, thought MMM was the MAN... Sure shot freaking ROCKED!.. then some dude, for no aparant reason, went insane and decided to kick me straight in the nuts!!! I fell to the floor gasping for breathe, my gf pulled me to the side and tried to get me up.. ended up I had to leave I was in SO much pain..

We worked so hard to get those tix, and I have been wanting to see them for so long.. and something like this just had to happen.. I have been to probably at least 60 different types of concerts and shows in my life... and I have never seen a crowd that was so 'odd' in my life.. you had insane/trashed people all the way up to really young kids to thier fathers/mothers.. it made for a very misplaced crowd.. and I just happened to get nut kicked my some stupid ass dude..

I was so upset that I missed 95% of this show cause of this ive not been able to post this till now.. it fucking sucked!

but from what I saw.. THE BEASTIES ARE ON POINT!!!!

Oh, I was not disappointed. I finally got to see my favorite Boys after trying for six years! Every time I try to see them some cosmic, chaos butterfly event prohibits it. Tibetan Freedom concert '98: Could only get tickets for Saturday, the day a bolt of lightning hit RFK...my parents and my lack of cash flow (I was 16) prevented me from going back on Sunday to throw money at the scalpers. Summer of '99 (i think)...my friend and I went to ticketmaster psychotically early on the day tickets went on sale for the beasties/rage tour, anticipating a huge line and a rapid sellout (we were the only ones there). Got our tickets and got freakishly excited for the show, the way only 17 year old girls can. Then Mike D, God love him, falls off his bike and breaks his arm??!? Does anyone else remember this? I was thinking darling, get a driver! You're Michael Diamond! So the whole tour was cancelled, and my friend and I bitterly went back to Ticketmaster to get our $45 back, or whatever it was.
So based on past experience, I was not optimistic about getting tickets this time. I knew I wanted to, I mean the 9:30 club is the ideal venue for this show, Beastie Boys is the number one group I would ever want to see live. But I was experiencing "learned helplessness", as my psychology classes taught me. I didn't even try to call in to the radio because I knew I wouldn't get through...I tried maybe once, but I hate that game, trying to beat the busy signal, using up my cell minutes, being stuck listening to the same station all day. I thought they were being kind of cruel and unusual too..."sure, we'll give you tickets! Just make a very specific sign, get on network TV, get a tape of yourself on TV, and hand deliver it to our office!" I'm sure it can be done, but I have better things to do. Then I got some magical emails telling me I could buy tickets, and I was all over it. Thanks to high-speed internet, I got on the website right as it opened, and despite my hands shaking and entering my credit card number wrong, the tickets were mine, and only $15 each.
When we finally got to the show and those HFS dudes came out and played the "good news/bad news" game (another peeve), I thought I was once again going to get screwed, and I was going to seriously consider the possibility that God just hates me and does not want me to be happy. But I was so grateful that I only had to wait a few hours and they would in fact deliver a show. Think about it, flights out of NYC were not happening (it was storming that night), so the Boys totally could have been like "f it"...but instead they got on a train and booked it down here. I thought that was really fantastic of them. And then they got us pizza?? (was that actually the Boys' idea? That's what I heard.) Free food is totally the way to this girl's heart, and furthermore I seriously don't know if I would have lasted without it (after all the alcohol and other substances I really needed scooby snacks).
So the fact that they only played 50 minutes was almost completely fine with me, I was ready to go home anyway after being there that long, drinking and smoking and jumping around with sweaty dudes. I thought Mix Master Mike was nothing short of phenomenal, he even had the Boys going "oh shit!" a couple of times. And I hate when critics are all like "wow they're old, look at MCA, his hair is gray and his voice is worn." These people obviously have not been paying attention for the past 18 years. MCA's hair has ALWAYS been gray, his voice ALWAYs sounds like that. I never noticed how skilled he really is (usually I am blinded by my huge crush on Adrock) but I thought MCA sounded soooo tight. They all did, and I was so happy they closed with "whatcha want" (my fave).
So basically this is a love letter to the Boys...I know some people might disagree but personally I was thrilled. I was cheesing through the entire performance like a dorky kid. The only thing that would have made it better would have been you know, pictures and autographs and high fives, but I know how to quit while I'm ahead. ;)

I missed the Beastie boys at the '98 Tibetan Freedom concert too. What's with Beastie shows in DC and Lightning!?! They could have easily cancelled the show all together but they didn't. There are so many bands who have been around for as long as the Beasties and they charge hundreds of dollars for a nose bleed seat in a huge stadium. For a free show for many and a $15 ticket for me to see them that close and be a part of the show, I would gladly do it all again. I would still feel the same way if they only performed for a 1/2 hour! Thank you Beastie Boys!!!!
