It seems to me the Beasties were shooting something for a marketing thing for television, from reading the article...
side note - it would be sweet however if they were filming stuff on this little international tour they are taking, and later used it in a music video.

"Hip-hop outfit The Beastie Boys have commissioned Merrick and Rosso to shoot their new video clip in Sydney. / The Daily Telegraph "
The way this is put, it definitely implies it's a Beastie thing. But I don't think it's a video for a new song as that would be essential to mention in the article.

It has been a while since I have put a blog up. A little bit has happened. For starters, a couple of days ago I was in a Beastie Boys video. Not familiar with their work, but that wasn't part of the selection criteria. There wasn't much in the selection criteria really. Expect my scone and scooter to be in a BB video soon (seperate scenes). Filming of video clips are not glamorous by the way. Something to do though.

No new video clip was used in the Sydney show yesterday.
I think the band are making a mini-movie to go along with their "soundtrack album." They're definitely producing a concept album. It's going to be the type of thing that people scratch their head at. Twenty years from now, they'll be heralded for their innovative approach toward music and film because of this new album.

I'm pretty skeptical about this being a music video. I remember before TT5B came out, Minton came on here and made a big announcement in the forums about how "great" the music video was that the Boys just shot for "Ch Check It Out."
I could be wrong though, maybe it's so ill that they want to keep it super-secret from everyone.

Perhaps it's a video in the spirit of Sabotage or Body Movin' that they could just plug one of their new funky/instrumental/spy thriller songs into the video.

From what I can gather, it is part of a concept DVD. Two songs were covered and the boys played out a spy spoof of sorts across the two songs. They were shooting a car (and I think boat) chase scene on the Saturday (before their gig at Good Vibrations). The songs weren't at all what I expected from the BB - sort of a 60s psych sound and entirely instrumental. I notice someone on the BB forum thought mod, but they wanted something a little earlier than that - like a 1960 LA cocktail party, though with the scooters and us mods in it, there will be a mod feel a little. There were plenty of girls with big hair and short frocks. That's about all the info I can give, though a mate of mine's Valliant (great vintage Australian car) is featured, which I thought was a cool touch.

Im literally drooling at the idea of a concept dvd. and at a 60s instrumental music record, or whatever.
especially the
1960 LA cocktail party
thing sounds great to me.
but i definitely have a thing from everything from that ''era''
i was kinda hoping for more hardcore stuff, but this sounds great. and i have tons of sixties cocktail dresses i could wear at a bb show, if thats the new direction.:D:D

Well, if the next album is entirely instrumental, it will be the total opposite of TT5B, which seemed to me like it had too many robot noises and scratches.

The Beasties have a style that is hard to describe. In my opinion, their "hiphop" is not like any other hiphop. I don't listen to any other current rap music.
While I'm more a fan of their hiphop, their music oozes with a personality that is hard to describe. Whether it's Aglio E Olio, In Sounds, Country Mike, LTI or TT5B.
I hope this album has people confused. The same effect when people bought Paul's Boutique expecting to hear LTI part 2.
They can record themselves reading the dictionary...and it would be funny and cool. And I'd buy it. I drank the magic kool-aid a long time ago. :)

Nobody listens to the beastie boys for their awesome instrumental songs. If Licensed to Ill was an instrumental album then they wouldnt be around today. So what? I'd be let down, and so would alot of fans. No artists should make music to please the fans, they should make the music they dig. But with that being said, the fans get let down from time to time when any artist decides to do something different.

a very thoughtful and truthful statement as usual, Laver. It really is their personality that allows there listeners to travel from genre to genre with them. Right on the money, brother.
I have a feeling that a lot of the songs might sound like song for the man
yo I've been thinkin' the same exact thing, man! this 60s northern soul cocktail psychadelia talk instantly made me think of song for the man. what a treat a record of these tracks would be too. Actually, I'd say song for junior fits that same cocktail vibe as well.

this picture appears like it could possibly be doctored. Mike's head looks a bit big for the body and like it may have been airbrushed to match. "you can't truss it", just yet. (no offense Boulangerie)

What makes the Beastie Boys so great is the fact that they do hiphop, hardcore, and instrumentals.
All three styles make them what they are, not just the hiphop. If they never expanded their sound after Pauls Boutique then they wouldn't be as interesting. Its all the styles together that compliment each other, and really bring dimension to the sound. That is in part the reason why they stand out from the rest.

It sounds fucking risky, and it's a little disappointing that they weren't actually being themselves with TT5B, but rather donning another 'image' a la Hello Nasty.
I'm sure I'll like whatever it is, but I won't allow my mind to be blown for any old stuff. A lot of fans are going to pass off whatever they do as genius.
There is an off chance of rap on the album if Mike D's Outkast obsessions culminate in them doing 'concept' raps in the vein of Idlewild.
I pray this isn't an instrumental album (!)

If it's all instrumental, I guarantee it will be received en masse ( not counting the faithful of the MB community) much the same way TT5B was. Where TT5B sounded same-y to people, a whole album of instrumentals may do as well. The thing I think they're best at it is pause-tape versatility. It may be that they're now good enough at it to switch genres by the album, and not the song. We'll have to wait and see.
I am ready to be shocked and amazed maybe, but there is the chance that without a little vocal flair, we could be in line for the most anticipated background music in history.
And no, I'm not being pessimistic. Like cj hood, I always hope I'm wrong, and I'm quite prepared to be in this case. But many have already judged the moves they are making as genius before the fact. A little balance can be good, no?

I wouldn't call it "donning another image", I think they just go through phases. Just doing what feels right at the time for them.
Who knows, the recent gigs in Oz might have inspired them to loop up some stuff and put some hiphop in there.
And I think some stuff might have a "Live at PJs" vibe.

Honestly, I don't care if they don't rap on the new disc. But if it's all strictly instrumental, it'll want to be really good.

I'm not going to critique something before I hear it. I'll be honest about the subject though, I'm looking forward to a instrumental album. I honestly think it's a great idea. I don't know how many times I had played the "the In Sounds" at the records store I work at and some older person would come in and make some sort of comment like "This is some funky shit. Who is it?". I let em know its the Beastie Boys and they were like "I didn't know...they played...instruments...remember...fight for your..." and they end up buying it.

Nah...I disagree. If they really wanted to get out of the hiphop game, then why make TT5B all hiphop, and the whole Pageant tour had an old-school hiphop vibe with the tracksuits, homemade hats and t-shirts, etc. And playing the west coast shows, S. America, and Oz shows with a traditional hiphop set.
I mean...if they wanted to get out of the game, they could disappear for a few years without keeping themselves in public eye. Who knows?
I just think they're being experimental. Kinda like the Country Mike sessions...except that we know about it before it drops and it'll drop on a bigger scale.

As sad as this is, I had a dream about the new album, and there were instrumentals on it, and songs with vocals, like shouty surf punk vocals, and American Woman type singing. So it was lounge-ish, rock-ish, and punk-ish. One song I had to describe to somebody as a "Lo-Fi sort of 'Black Dog' with Yauch singing". My dreams are shit.

I'd be trully gutted if tt5b was the beasties hip hop swan song. No disrespect to tt5b but i'm sure they still have a few 'better' hip hop joints in them.
Besides, didn't anyone think that they embraced hip hop in the tt5b era in a way not seen since PB/CYH?
Surely they can't just 'live hip hop' for one album and then turn they're back on it?

People are thinking they'll like it because of In Sounds. I remember a lot of people measured what they thought TT5B would be like on PB and LTI. And they were let down.

I can listen to Paul's Boutique, In Sounds From Way Out! (which I basically bought for one song and instrumental versions of two songs that were already almost entirely instrumental), and Aglio E Olio and enjoy them all. Check Your Head is my favourite album because of the diversity.
The point I'm making is that no matter what they put out I'll probably love it. Even across genres there's a Beastie Boys "feel". They know how to put good songs together.

I knew the beastie boys from LTI and then started listening to them again with the In sound of way out and I was so impressed like" is that the same band I used to listen to when I was in school?!?"
