Sorry if this has been asked before, but I thought I'd ask... Why no LTI reissue like the others?
I mean... It IS a good album. I actually like it more than tt5b...

because it is their only stupid album. The album is good it just doesn't compare to any of their other albums. Pop Your Balloon is a better song then LTI is an album.

well... that's the best answer we got.
i guess it makes sense...
...but a special edition vinyl with all the early singles and b-sides would be awesome.
speak to r.simmons@defjam.com he might help you out.

pre PB days, I loved LTI myself. I would have probably never purchased PB myself had I not had so many good memories/thoughts of LTI. In fact when I purchased PB I was wishing for LTI part 2. First time I heard PB, I was not sure what to think and a little disappointed that the sound was so different from LTI. Luckily I listened to PB about 5 times before I gave up on it and found myself with PB stuck in my head in almost permanent rotation in my car cassette player until Check Your Head. I have 3 songs from LTI on my mp3 player today, and my 6 year old likes those LTI tracks. So, I guess I have love for LTI, but I have moved on and enjoy newer productions more. However, LTI was my introduction to the Beastie Boys and it was a great time in my life ... 6th/7th grade, my best friend had 2 12inch woofers in the back of his cutlass supreme and we were the cool kids cruise-n down the boulevard often with a list of 8th grade chicks wishing they were riding with us. If I had to put a number on my total Beastie Boy listening, I would say LTI makes up less than 3%. And seems to me, even AIFST has some LTI tracks, so its not like theres no love...

Seconded.
To dismiss LTI as stupid and then jock TT5B w/ lines like, "What the falafel? You gotta get up awful....," makes no fucking sense.

I love my Dad for driving me around to rural Canadian hockey rinks when I was 10 and letting me play LTI and Bigger and Deffer in the LeMans tape deck without batting an eye.
Thanks Dad!!!!

I'm tired of people comparing Beastie Boys albums. They all come from different angles, different styles, none of them are similar. You really can't compare them.
By the way jayjacobson, no offense, but you have the biggest obsession with Pop Your Balloon

I love LTI. It represents the 80's, good times, partying. I think the music is still amazing to listen to this very day. The old school beats off the hook. The rapping is fierce and Fine!!!!! :D I listen to this album as much as I do their newer stuff. I mean I embrace it all and it just depends on my mood on what album for the week, day or month that I want to listen to.

Its not awful or anything, some bits make me cringe and some hint at what was to come but its not as varied in styles as the others. Nothing on LTI makes me want to listen to it a lot.
nice one for bumping this, i hadnt seen camo's line about russell simmons. Nice work.

At the risk of getting my head torn off, I personally think the varied opinion over LTI has to simply do with the fact that it's just very dated. Like most rap pre 88/89, really.
That said, being dated certainly doesn't detract from any album's degree of quality or importance. In fact, oftentimes something will sound dated sheerly because of how influential and significant it really was. When a record sets a new precedent for a genre, it's only natural that much of the community's output to follow (consequently influenced by said work) will make it sound less exciting or even generic in some instances.
Also, at even higher risk of getting snapped at, I'd be willing to bet that the majority of those most passionately defending the record actually lived it; meaning, they felt the impact, heard the before and after, tasted the freshness of it during it's day. Not to mention grew up with it too, therefore developing a nostalgia as well.
While LTI is at the bottom of my Beastie list, I can still honestly say I enjoy it, and furthermore can appreciate and respect the achievement that it really was.
Licensed to Ill is certainly one of those mega-classics that will always be held prisoner by it's own era and place in time.

Excellent post McDuff! LTI struck a chord with me as a 17 year old back in 1986. I totally connected with the album's party vibe and rebellious attitude. Then I grew up along with each subsequent album. In my opinion, LTI is a perfect album....even with FFYR and Girls.

I also agree with Brother Mcduff on this one. It's definitely more than a novelty to me. I think that even though they were young the talent was evident and the songs represented a time and era. It's like loads of artists songs at that time can be forgotten but everybody remembers what they were doing while listening to Paul Revere or Brass Monkey etc... These songs are a huge part of people's memories fans or not. To me that's pretty amazing and it's cool that they ended up just getting better and better and reinventing themselves along the way. (y)

to me its an album of great bits. i have grown to really love FFYR despite all the shit that comes with it but its a pop classic. the intro is one of the GREATEST intros of all time.

LTI will always have hold fond memories for me cos its the first Beastie boys album I listened to and without that I may not have got into them at all and missed out completely
To me its still sounds as fresh now then it did 25 years ago when I first listened to it

Licensed to Ill is hysterical. I never listen to any of those songs without a big fat smirk on my face. And don't dis girls. you think those boys weren't being smart asses singing that shit? i love looking at those times they were smart, young idiots and bless their cotton socks for it.

Well if you ask anybody outside of the fandom including critics they have nothing but praise for FFYR, even more so for She's On It actually. I've seen countless music critics say that one was perfection because it combined rock, punk and rap. I don't see anybody actually dissing the early stuff except for the fans. The guys never really diss it, they just mainly talk more so about the way they presented themselves. But to me the music always stood out more anyway. It's why I became a fan. But I was never fooled. I watched interviews during that time and they were still sweet as pie to me. :D
I never had any problems with their lyrics. Some of my favorite lines come from LTI and Paul's Boutique.
