The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame show on HBO was dedicated to him, they put his picture up at the end.
Saturday Night Live played a Yauch verse from the Beastie's performance of Sure Shot on SNL in 94.

when Jimmy Fallon introduces The Roots on Fridays monologue, Questlove takes MCA's "respect to women" verse from Sure Shot and finishes with "MCA Rest in Peace... the sure shot" at the 4:00 mark
http://www.latenightwithjimmyfallon.com/video/friday-may-4-2012/1399990/
it's been so hard to keep up with all the links and news stories, I've been online the last few days rather than tuning in to broadcast and cable outlets. I hear they play the So Whatcha want Clip and honor Yauch but I haven't seen the whole thing yet.
edit: around the 13:00 mark when they come back from break Jimmy adds one more "Thank You" to his list, holding tears back and simply said "I love him"
and of course the Roots play Beastie Boys in and out of all commercial breaks.

STOCKHOLM
A friend in high school gave me a C90 cassette with The Beastie Boys Licence to ill on one side and RUN DMCs Raising Hell on the other.
- This is something completely new and you will never listen to music the same way again, he said confidently.
It was 1986 and as a cocky teenager I didn’t take him seriously. But he was absolutely right. That tape changed in so many ways my whole life.
I know that music journalists have the ability to use just that the wording a little too often, sometimes without really thinking. But this tape set for the first time the door wide for hip hop. At least for me, and it seldom left my Walkman in the school hallway in Jacob's school.
This cassette also changed what I had called rap to hip hop. And as a rather lonely modernist, with a head full of arguments about pop music, and without anyone to really share them, I could not stop listening.
This was the future. So it seemed. Everything happened almost exactly the same time: The Style Council and Robert Elms made me discover modern contemporary soul, The Pet Shop Boys and David Toop did the same for house music and the Beastie Boys and Stuart Cosgrove was the portal to New York with its hip-hop and street fashion there was no turning back from where you've gone into it.
All the pilgrimages to the Beastie Boys store for clothing label X-Large at Lafayette in New York - and whence came the furious sampled flutes on Check your head? Forever so underrated album Paul's Boutique, their ingenious magazine Grand Royal, and world domination that followed.
Somewhere in the late 1990's, Beastie Boys and me lost the connection. We grew in different directions but respect for their original offense, I will never lose.
Adam Yauch, better known as MCA, the so-handsome graying third of The Beastie Boys, lost his three-year battle with cancer on Friday. He was 47 years old and thus was the same age as me when he first received his diagnosis.
As a new father in the same generation are affected perhaps harder than the injustice and sadness of such a kind-hearted champion of Tibet's freedom - and also the father of a young daughter - snatched away before their time.
When I just the other week was unpacking a cardboard box after moving I found a small box of old photos, saved postcards and letters from long ago. At the bottom of it there was a Rolex replica from X-Large.
The battery of course, had run out since several years, the hands had stopped at a quarter to seven. But this afternoon it is me who takes it to the first best watchrepairer and wear it like an armband in memory of Adam Yauch.

Pelosi Statement on the Passing of Adam Yauch
Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement on the passing of Adam Yauch, 47, a founding member of the Beastie Boys and an advocate for the people of Tibet:
"As an artist, Adam Yauch changed the course of music; as a humanitarian, he changed lives. He was a creative genius who used his powerful platform and celebrity to address the cause of human rights for the people of Tibet. Adam Yauch was devotee of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and an agent of change.
http://dccc.org/blog/entry/10598/
"Adam Yauch's concerts raised awareness on campuses across the country; what a beautiful sight it was in 1996, when he drew 100,000 people to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco for a concert to benefit the cause of freedom in Tibet. His knowledge of issues and his activism were deeply rooted in his values.
"I hope it is a comfort to the many who loved and admired Adam, especially his wife Dechen and his daughter Tenzin, that so many grieve their loss and are praying for them at this sad time."

We've lost one of our greats. A true gentleman with the strongest resolve, humor, and energy to spin the world on its axis...and that is exactly what he did. Let's not forget he did it with panache and style and beats and in various costumes. Even while dressed as a Swiss mountain climber. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Beasties and to Adam's family and fans. Michael Stipe and REM

V Exclusive! D.M.C. Praises The Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch aka MCA
Posted May 4, 2012
www.vibe.com/article/v-exclusive-dmc-praises-beastie-boys-adam-yauch-aka-mca
D.M.C., legendary emcee and member of the iconic hip-hop group Run-D.M.C., offers his memories of fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and late Beastie Boys great Adam “MCA” Yauch. --Keith Murphy
“When we first met MCA and the Beastie Boys back in the early ‘80s it was almost like we were in a movie. These guys were outrageous, spontaneous, funny, loud, confident…they were so real. We thought MCA, Ad-Rock, and Mike D were some of the coolest cats on the face of the earth. It was just their energy. The Beasties didn’t care. They would dress up in the sweat suits [laughs]. They had the whole rebellious thing of, ‘We are who we are.’ It was the same feeling that hip-hop had. MCA and them wanted to be unique. It was like that for all of us, including Run-D.M.C. We wanted to standout; we wanted to have fun. And although the Beasties were punk rock, they were still able to be hip-hop. They weren't white rappers trying to be black. They weren't rapping about Cadillac’s and 40 ounces. They didn’t where the fat gold chains and the Godfather hats like Run-D.M.C. and Jam Master Jay did. We thought we were crazy, but MCA and those guys were crazy with their sneakers, their leather jackets, their Budweiser beer and all the stuff they did. Real recognizes real.
The Beastie Boys were giving the same feeling of hip-hop, but with a different expression. And MCA was an important part of that. His voice was incredible. It was deep, rugged, it was powerful and it demanded authority. MCA’s voice was like the flipside to Chuck D’s voice! When you listened to a Beastie Boys record, he made you say, ‘Who is this guy?’ Because Ad-Rock and Mike D had great voices, too. But they had a crazy twang and higher pitch to their sound. MCA’s voice was the father figure of the group. When you listen to the Beasties, MCA’s voice basically told everybody, ‘Y’all can think we are a joke all you want, but we are real with what we do.’
I remember touring with MCA and the Beasties on Run-D.M.C.’s Raising Hell Tour and the one we co-headlined with them, The Together Forever tour. There is one story about MCA that I always mention. I remember we were touring in Europe and the stage had gotten really wet because they were throwing beer around all over the place. So we are on the side watching the Beastie Boys’ show thinking, ‘Yo, somebody is going to bust their ass tonight.’ Sure enough, MCA slipped and flew about 20 feet in the air [laughs]. He came down real hard. We all thought he was severely hurt. We were like, ‘Yo, call the ambulance!’ But this motherfucka just gets up and keeps rapping! We were shocked. That’s the type of performer MCA was.
What is MCA’s legacy? It’s the legacy of the Beastie Boys. MCA is from a legendary group that helped change music. You can’t talk about Eminem without talking about the Beasties first. The Beastie Boys made it possible for not just Eminem to have the courage to do hip-hop, he also made it possible for Vanilla Ice, 3rd Bass, and for any white guy to pick up the mic and be accepted. They are true pioneers. And not just white rappers…black rappers should bow down to them. Because the Beastie Boys accomplished so much for the entire hip-hop culture. These rappers nowadays can’t even approach what they did. They will never do what the Beastie Boys did. They changed the world. Run-D.M.C. will always be connected with them. We traveled the world together. We laughed together, we slept in the same rooms together, we cried together, we got drunk together…we changed history together.
It’s a sad day for music, a sad day for MCA’s family and friends, and a sad day for hip-hop. But it’s all good because at least we got some Beastie Boys records we can go listen to tomorrow.—As told to Keith Murphy (@murphdogg29)

By Rob Markman
Adam "MCA" Yauch leaves behind a throng of mourning fans, and those who knew the Beastie Boys member personally have continued to share their final messages. Yauch's pals Madonna and Mix Master Mike shared their goodbyes with MTV News. "The Beastie Boys were one of a kind! And so was Adam! They were all an important part of my musical history. And integral to the musical revolution that was happening at the time," mega-star Madonna said in statement obtained by MTV News after Yauch passed away on Friday (May 4) after a long battle with cancer. "I'm very sad to hear about Adam's passing. G*D bless him and his family."
Madge included the Beasties as an opening act on her 1985 The Virgin Tour. Madonna had already established herself as a formidable pop act with her first two LPs and the Beasties were just getting started. Their iconic debut album License To Ill wouldn't come until a year later.
Mix Master Mike didn't start out a Beastie, but his legacy before his work with the Boys is well documented. A world champion turntabilist, Mike got the call to work with the Beastie Boys on their 1998 Grammy Award winning album Hello Nasty and has been rocking with the trio ever since. He too was hit particularly hard after Yauch's death. "The music world has lost an Icon and i lost a brother. I give thanks to Adam Yauch for allowing me to be apart of the Beastie legacy. I am so honored to have graced the stage with my idols for 15 historic years," he said in a statement issued to MTV News. "Thank U for your friendship and thank you for picking me to be your DJ. forever I will hold you close to my heart. My Condolences go out to the Yauch family."
There were a number of tributes on Friday night. During Coldplay's concert at Hollywood Bowl last night, Chris Martin and company performed a slowed down, piano-laden rendition of of the Beastie Boys' anthemic "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)."
The Red Hot Chili Peppers also paid their respects during their show at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Friday. "We're playing this show tonight for Adam Yauch," RHCP frontman Anthony Kiedis said to the crowd as reported by Rolling Stone.
Yauch didn't just inspire musicians, last night during their home baseball game against the Arizona Diamondbacks the entire New York Mets team paid tribute to the fallen Brooklynite by playing the Beastie's music as they each walked up to the plate.

I will repeat myself for this sticky.
The Mets batters used beastie boys songs as their walk up songs, the giants and mariners did something similar. the UFC fight had a dedication to him, and within the past ten minutes the Madison square garden dj did something for yauch during game 4 of the knicks-heat series. I am unsure of what it was, I'm just looking on twitter, but something definitely just happened at the garden.

Listening to this now - thanks, Paul!
Always love listening to Huey's shows - it's so obvious that he loves his music. His tastes really shine through unlike most of the DJs on BBC radio.
It's also quite obvious how downbeat he is when he's talking about Yauch's passing at the start but once the BBoys music starts playing he cheers up and becomes his usual chirpy self - who wouldn't? :D

Dear BBoys Brothers and Sisters,
I'm a message board noob and I usually keep my mouth shut and let Khloe, Turch, Scooby and the rest of you take the reigns--I know my place on the totum pole. I have to thank the contributers to this thread, though. My whole weekend has been a blur of Adam. It consumes every part of me that's left after the diapers are changed and the mouths are fed, and the house is (not really) put in order. Thank you thank you thank you for being the community that I turned to when my friends, coworkers, and family think I'm over-reacting to a huge loss in my (ours, yours, the world's) life.

Dear @all,
truthful sincere words of Mr LL Cool J and the others.
The whole weekend I was overwhelmed about Mr Yauch`s going home. Not only because of the fact, that the beastie boys are still one of my favorite "gangs", but the truth is, the 4th of may is the anniversery of death of my father, just 15 years ago.
(The truth, I promise).
So I didn`t get out of melancholy until today and thought about a real big tribute for MCA.
I know, it`s to early for stuff like that and it sounds maybe out of place for some of you.
But wouldn`t it be extraordinary, if Mr Diamond and Mr Horovitz would think in the future about a cinema movie, titled of course, "PWR 2 MCA". This film could not only be a historical view back, about the beginning and the sensational success of the bboys and other participated old schoolers.
It could be a movie for peace and international understanding. I really could imagine, everyone in the near environment is involved in that "project".( Maybe Including a speech of his wife, an explanation of the tibetan conflict, showing a bridge which was built to our black bros and sis, some episodes out of the heart from Mr Horovitz and Mr Diamond, fusioned and all mixed up with good, good music....).The benefit could partly be donated to human organisations or whatever you believe in.
Once a time I read, the best thing you can do, is to bother yourself, if you`re filled up with real big concerns, including a process for such a lost without trying to push it away.
I hope you could accept my rash thoughts and don`t misunderstand them.
Thank you.

I just wanted to add my two cents because I've been contemplating a Beasties tat forever and I haven't pulled the strings due to money and not knowing exactly what I want. Now I've been thinking even harder about it..these last few days have definitely turned that on...

About a month ago, I told my husband that I wanted a new tattoo. He asked of what? and I said idk--I'll just have to wait for the inspiration. I never thought this sadness would be the inspiration I sought. I have a few ideas rattling around, but it would mean a lot to hear your (you amazing fans) ideas of a great Adam tat. Please and thank you.
I am on the same page as you. I've never had a tattoo and I've wanted one for years. Up til now the best idea I had was a 45/7" spindle. But F that. It's got to be Beasties. Should we start a new thread?

I always felt like Adam was a brother from an east coast mother: bass, hoops and Bad Brains.
A crazy talent whose contributions with his band were inspirational and consistently ground breaking.
Our thoughts go out to his family, friends and his Beastie brothers.

Beast In Peace MCA.
A friend of mine did a simple Tribute to MCA before his own one man show last Friday. I took this photo and thought it sort of represents all of the anonymous DJs, MCs & Bar Bands who rock parties, murder dance floors and make our Wedding Receptions bearable who on that same night were all probably dedicating their sets to Adam.

The Nation: The Gritty Legacy Of Adam Yauch
by Dave Zirin
May 7, 2012
Dave Zirin is the sports editor for The Nation magazine.
"Born and bred Brooklyn U.S.A. They call me Adam Yauch but I'm M.C.A."
In the '60s they said, "don't trust anyone over 30." When it comes to remembering Adam "MCA" Yauch, who died on May 4, I don't trust anyone under 30. Adam Yauch and the Beastie Boys stood for more than just hip hop and their personal "sounds of science." They repped the soul of a city that no longer exists.
The Beasties were global ambassadors from a lost New York City since smothered under the weight of police violence and gentrification. It was a city that churned out hip hop and basketball legends with arrogant ease. It was a city where the question "what do you do" was less about your job than what you did after work. It was a city where the clubs you could get into were less important than the neighborhoods you could get into — and out of. It was a city where if you could see over the counter, you were getting served. It was a city where a scuffle on 42nd and Broadway might spark and you would not even blink.
It was a city that's remembered as being "divided," and those divisions were real. Few realized it at the time that these divisions comprised two competing visions of the city's future, particularly who would live, work, and die in it's borders. Those of us on our side of the barricades might not have gotten the seismic shifts about to take place, but we were never less alienated, never closer. We ran from the police, drank and smoked on corners, and slept on each other's floors in rent-controlled apartments. (Younger readers can use Google to learn what "rent control" means.)
We stood together because the city was breaking apart and we were clutching each other on the same piece of floating earth. There were the names we all knew: Michael Stewart, Eleanor Bumpers, Yusef Hawkins. Places like Howard Beach. Bensonhurst and Crown Heights weren't neighborhoods. They were crime scenes.
This was my New York. I was the 12-year-old Jewish kid on the Upper West Side who played basketball, listened to Kurtis Blow, UTFO and Whodini and was called a "rap nerd" in my overwhelmingly white school. My teachers told my parents that my music, my awkward anger, my awful grades, were just a phase. For me, the Beasties were like a sonic liberation army playing the Battle Hymn of the Misfits.
From the first time I saw them, in the 1985 movie Krush Groove, it was clear: They were Brooklyn, but they were Jewish. They were outsiders, but they were down. If you got the Beastie Boys, it meant you could get underground hip hop, get anti-racism as more than a pose and, f- -k it, get some damn friends. They taught us that you could fit in just by being true to yourself.
As DMC, of the great RUN DMC said of the Beasties, "The thing that worked with us was it was the same feeling but different expression. Their sneakers could be dirty and muddy and they could've had them since fifth grade, and our sneakers had to be clean, but we both rocked the music, the presentation.... You know what was good about them? It wasn't an act. It wasn't white rappers trying to be black — they were themselves, and we respected that. Real recognized real."
MCA, Mike D, and Ad Rock, were my gateway to Public Enemy, Rakim, BDP and — of course — more Beastie Boys. Paul's Boutique. Check Your Head. Ill Communication. Root Down. Hello Nasty. Always innovative, but never disconnected from their roots, even as the old neighborhoods were bring uprooted.
Over time, from adolescence to adulthood, the Beasties showed that being true to your music and politics didn't have to be a phase but could be a way of life. For me, it was never about keeping up with them politically the way I did musically. It was just noticing out of my eye's corner that we were on the same s- -t. They were against war whether launched by Clinton, Bush or Obama. They were anti-racist as a way of life. As the Beasties grew up, they recognized and publicly renounced the homophobia or sexism in their early music. Yauch rhymed famously, "I want to say a little something that's long overdue/ The disrespect to women has got to be through/ To all the mothers and sisters and the wives and friends/ I want to offer my love and respect to the end."
Over one weekend in 1998, I was protesting Clinton's bombing of the Sudan and Afghanistan. That Sunday night, there was MCA at the MTV Video Music Awards going out of his way to denounce the attacks from the stage. He spoke about anti-Arab racism in the United States and, in frighteningly prescient fashion, the dangers of what such indiscriminate bombing could eventually bring back to the States.
They stayed true to themselves but even more importantly they stayed true to ideals forged by a forgotten city. Now that New York of the 1980s is as gone as a thirty-five-cent subway ride. Manhattan is an off-shore boutique and Brooklyn is where everyone wants to be and no one can afford to move. If there was any kind of conflict in today's Times Square, it's easier to imagine Navy Seals rappelling down to break it up than any kind of scuffle. Our last hoops all-star was Ron Artest. 98.7 Kiss FM with DJ Red Alert is now as of last week, ESPN radio. The Yankees and Mets play in publicly funded palaces while the city's public schools and social services rot from neglect.
This past year, however we saw some daylight in the darkness: the Occupy Wall Street movement represented the city's first visible fight against the generational urban priorities of Mayors Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg. And there, marching with us, in between cancer treatments, was Adam "MCA" Yauch.
MCA leaves us something more valuable than memories. He leaves a compass we need to move forward. It's a compass that points to how you can grow up but still stay real. It's a compass that directs us to fight for the future of the Five Boroughs and not just revel in the past, because the old enchanted city is never coming back. It's a compass that speaks to the best parts of ourselves: to stand up, to be heard and to always never forget that there is no sleep 'till Brooklyn.

Hello,
I'm new and just want to pay my respects to MCA. I have loved the Beastie Boys since they first came out in the mid 80's over here in Ireland. I am the same age as MCA and just cannot believe he is gone. Back in the 80's we had no internet of course and hardly ever saw them on tv. So we heard them played on the radio and bought the records. Their music was (and still is) so uplifting.
This past weekend i have been looking at dozens of videos on youtube, videos we never had the opportunity to watch back then. And mourning the loss of lovely, lovely Adam Yauch. (Gawd, why can't we find a cure for this scourge that is cancer?!!)
Anyway, I found this lovely tribute by a dj here in Ireland, telling about the day he spent with the boys back in 95. Thought you guys might enjoy reading it.

PS. at the 18 second Mark, Questlove shouts Yauch, Yauch, Yauch.
when Jimmy Fallon introduces The Roots on Fridays monologue, Questlove takes MCA's "respect to women" verse from Sure Shot and finishes with "MCA Rest in Peace... the sure shot" at the 4:00 mark
http://www.latenightwithjimmyfallon.com/video/friday-may-4-2012/1399990/
it's been so hard to keep up with all the links and news stories, I've been online the last few days rather than tuning in to broadcast and cable outlets.

A Band Of Brothers (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1684708/adam-mca-yauch-beastie-boys.jhtml) - article from mtv
That "Band of Brothers" article is beautiful, and so true. There will never be another group like the Beasties. They weren't just about the music; they were also about humor, friendship, and LOYALTY. When I was watching the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions, it was so glaring how bands like Guns N' Roses had members who hated each other, who didn't show up because they couldn't even be in the same room together. Yet you saw how REAL the Beasties were as a group, with Mike saying how Yauch couldn't be there, but they wished he could have been, and with Adam reading Yauch's speech so movingly. Truly, a band of brothers. You will see no Yauch hologram, rest assured.
Wow...this sounds nice! I believe this is their pe-pageant show...right?
Yeah the ICA London in 2004, I won entrance from a BBC radio 1 when they had contest, really tiny place and was really close to the stage, they were occasionally giving out hand slaps and our man MCA grabbed my hand and pulled it and wouldn't let go for the for a time or maybe I was gripping on subconsciously.

Adam was incredibly sweet and the most sensitive artist, who I loved dearly. I was always inspired by his work. He will be missed by all of us.
In his passing, I want to share a yogic prayer.
This experience is tough for all of us to accept, but we know that we have only lost Adam in the physical world. His gifts will live forever. Adam is not dead because we're not. The eyes behind the eyes will always exist...your soul will always live. Even though our bodies rejuvenate every single cell every seven years, our consciousness will exist for eternity. There is one living, breathing journey of consciousness and we are all connected. God is the everlasting ocean of consciousness and we are just cups of this ocean. RIP MCA.

I never worried if Johnny Rad or Flippy McFlipperson was going to think I was cool enough to talk to, because I knew what true greatness was. It has nothing to do with talent and everything to do with heart and with taking the time to be nice and fully engaged in the moment, even when you don't have to be.

DJ Hurricane's statement about Yauch's passing:
http://allhiphop.com/2012/05/09/beastie-boys-dj-hurricane-remembers-mca/
"As I mourn my friend, Adam Yauch, aka MCA, I send my heartfelt condolences to his wife, daughter and loving parents. I think of all of the good times we shared that I will cherish forever. We rocked so many stages together: from Jerusalem to Italy to North America to South America to Japan to Australia and New Zealand; we toured the world several times over and I thank you for taking me on that journey. I am heartbroken, but will never forget the times we shared, as we grew from being kids to responsible adults. R.I.P. MCA I LOVE YOU...You will be missed dearly."

Hey Everyone,
Some of us got together and are quickly working our asses off arranging a simultaneous international event for this Saturday called "Intergalactic Brass Monkey Pour For Our Homie" in honor and commemorance of MCA. Yes, no kidding, the event name is that long. Please check out or FB page "Intergalactic Brass Monkey (http://on.fb.me/IBMPFOH-Intergalactic-RIP)", join the page, sign yourself up for the event and then send invites to all your friends on FB (you may be surprised how many of your friends are BB fans but the subject never came up). We also set up a Twitter account - @Galactic_Monkey you can follow on there and help spread the word to others who'd be interested in the event. Basically post about this everywhere in all languages you know. :) We don't have much time left to invite the entire galaxy -- We need you!!
Oh, yeah, the page is also a place where anyone can post anything BB and MCA related. One subject of interest is to hear people's best BB stories. Also, there's some debate about which Brass Monkey "recipe" was the one of their choosing. Love to get an answer to that... Finally, we're hoping people record their memorial parties and share them with us to post next week so we can all see each other's faces.
That's all for now, but don't be surprised when I repost about this so that people reading at different times of day have a chance to find out about the event. Feel free to ask me anything you can't find on the page or anything at all...

well maybe time was a factor for triple j. It was only the day after, at least the the thought was there. zane lowe had a few days and did admit that they were still fiddling with the 15 minute mix right up to broadcast.

this is what got me:
Adam Yauch was a regular kid, who sometimes needed to be pushed to do his homework—but not always, and sometimes came late---but not often, and who ultimately worked and learned some stuff about reading and writing in my class. He liked his fellow students, he enjoyed a good laugh, and he had depth and humanity, even then. When we discussed biographies for book reports, Adam read and wrote about Tony Hawk, the superstar skateboarder. Thirty years later I still remember it for its unbridled admiration of Hawk’s talents, and for his respect for Hawk’s philanthropy and good character. It never surprised me that Adam himself became a man of prodigious talent and who was concerned with people and philanthropy.
but the Tony Hawk timeline doesn't quite add up. Hawk was born 4 years after Yauch, and went pro when he was 14 in 1982.
http://skateboard.about.com/od/proskaterbios/p/ProTonyHawk.htm
Began Skating: 1977
First Sponsored: 1980
Turned Pro: 1982
edit: I guess that could have been Adam's senior year, but was Hawk doing charity work at such a young age? I myself was obsessed with Hawk in 1989, and you could say that I was a similar kid who always needed to be encouraged to reach my potential.

Adam Yauch, a founding member of the Beastie Boys who died of cancer last week, attended Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn. One of his teachers, Judith Berezin List, remembers having him in her class as a gangly freshman in 1979. She wrote this piece for the Murrow Network, the student newspaper. It has been lightly edited.

Some of you might remember me. I taught Communication Arts (English) at Murrow High School from 1978 until 2007, becoming the department assistant principal in 2004. I left my beloved Murrow to become the English department chair at Brentwood High School, in Suffolk County. I would like to share my reminiscences of “MCA,” Adam Yauch, my former student at Murrow.
Edward R. Murrow High School yearbook
Driving home from work last Friday, I listened to the news on 1010 WINS and I was deeply saddened to learn of the untimely death of Adam Yauch. I had often spoken about Adam to my son, Joe, now 21 years old and a college student.
Joe, a longtime Beastie Boys fan, had previously told me that Adam had been battling cancer. So, through my tears, I called Joe, not only to tell him the sad news, but to ask him to help me understand my great sadness. After all, I had not seen Adam in about 30 years, but my grief was almost overwhelming.
Adam was my student in Writer’s Workshop. I can still remember where he sat, near the window in the front of the class in 210A. He was thin and so his jeans and sweaters always seemed big on him. That year Adam seemed to grow much taller, and his face became more masculine and less of a boy’s face. He was quiet and unassuming, but always a presence in the class.
Was he an angel and an ideal student? No. But then, I never did favor those angelic types!
I’ll tell you what he was: Adam Yauch was a regular kid, who sometimes needed to be pushed to do his homework — but not always — and sometimes came late — but not often — and who ultimately worked and learned some stuff about reading and writing in my class.
He liked his fellow students, he enjoyed a good laugh, and he had depth and humanity, even then.
When we discussed biographies for book reports, Adam read and wrote about Tony Alva, the superstar skateboarder. Thirty years later I still remember it for its unbridled admiration of Alva’s talents.
It never surprised me that Adam himself became a man of prodigious talent and who was concerned with people and philanthropy.
Often Adam and I would ride the subway together, as we lived on the same Brooklyn street. On those rides home from school, he spoke about his band and the gigs they were starting to get.
One day he excitedly told me that his band would soon be getting a record contract. I really liked this kid, and so I cautioned him about not being too disappointed if it didn’t work out, and that he sure had plenty of time to find success.
Oh boy, was I wrong! Adam and the Beastie Boys became, well … you know how great and influential they were.
On the day that Adam died, I explained to my son that my memories of “MCA” were not just of the performer who helped revolutionize late-20th-century music and poetry, the public figure who memorialized E.R. Murrow High School and the Avenue M station in his hip-hop love letters to New York City; no, I still see Adam’s sweet face in the classroom, at the age of 16 or so, writing from the heart whenever possible.
As Joe said, maybe my sadness should be mixed with pride for perhaps influencing this man a tiny bit. Maybe it is good to remember the hopeful teenage Adam Yauch and recognize the cleareyed goodness and humanism he possessed, evident still in all the later publicity photos.
To Adam’s parents, wife, child and family and friends, I am so sorry for your great loss.
To all his Murrow family, let’s remember him and honor him for his creative and optimistic spirit, for the good he brought to the world, and for his passionate commitment to life and the arts.
And to teachers all over, I share my stories of the late Adam Yauch to remind you that we can never know which of our students will bring about the next revolution or create the next new idea and inspire a generation; therefore we must passionately believe that every student will surely be the next one to move us all forward and bring us that unwavering message of hope.
Thank you, Adam.
Editor’s note: A previous version of this post misidentified the skateboarder that Mr. Yauch wrote about. It was Tony Alva, not Tony Hawk.

I don't know if anyone listens to the Stuff You Should Know podcast (it's awesome, you should), but on yesterday's one - 'What is a shotgun house?' - they had a listener mail about the Beastie Boys.
Stuff You Should Know (http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/stuff-you-should-know/id278981407)
They read the mail at the end of the podcast, around the 20 minute mark.
The mail was about a girl who hung out with the Beastie Boys for a day during the License to Ill era, with stories about going to the Seven Eleven with Adrock and being kissed on the cheek by MCA.
The weird thing is, they recorded the podcast just before Yauch passed away...the timing is just a coincidence.
But the story is the same: Yauch was, and always has been a cool guy.

I was just thinking that maybe there should be one more Tibetan Freedom Concert in Yauch's memory, but then I thought that it couldn't happen, because a lot of the people who went went because of the band, so what if Adrock and Mike D don't want to continue the Beastie Boys?

We have a tv show here in australia called Rage that goes from midnightish to 6-7am on fri and sat nights, and it's just music videos. It's been going for decades, and a different band/artist hosts it every week and they pick the playlist. After just about every song it goes to the artist/s on the couch and they explain why they picked the next song.
The Beastie Boys hosted it in 1994 and 2007, and tonight Rage is playing both of their shows, its cool to see them sitting on the Rage couch at two different ages. MCA looks fucking suave in the 2007 one. It's playing right now, hopefully it will be available online. Do a search for ABC TV Rage.

That's bullshit but the cover may have all ready been set. Hopefully next month. Lesser musicians have gotten the cover after their death (I'm looking you, Kurt Cobain. And I love Nirvana).

In the Jewish Religion when someone dies we either send food, make a contribution in their name, or both. I was thinking since Adam was so amazing in his efforts to make the world a better place, it would be really cool if everyone on the board made a contribution to something in his name. He was involved in so much I am sure there is already something he has named, which possibly someone on here could inform us of ,or we can use a fund we already know he was involved in. Just a thought to honnor and pay respect to a man we all loved so much.
peace,

From Funky 16 Corners - nice write up:
http://funky16corners.com/?p=2755
Greetings all.
Welcome to another week here at the Corners du Fonque…
As has been mentioned several times recently most of what you’ve been reading here in the last few weeks was – due to necessity – prepared a few weeks in advance so as to facilitate the massive amount of commuting and other life-disrupting activities involved in my wife’s treatment (which, now that I mention it seems to be going well, so let’s keep those fingers crossed).
This weekend has been especially tiring, but the news of the passing of the mighty MCA, Adam Yauch could not be ignored, so as soon as we got home and rolled out of the Funky16Corners-mobile, I rolled into the record vault and got to work.
I have listened to hip hop, first passively (way back in the day) and then as a lightweight consumer with a focus therein on what I would consider dynamic use of sampled material.
You can’t really talk about that aspect of the game without giving props to the Beastie Boys.
Over the years the Beasties have played a big part in piqueing my interest in samples and by association the sounds sampled (why else would I have owned a copy of Alphonse Mouzon’s ‘Funky Snakefoot’) long before I was spinning (or writing about) funk, soul, jazz and rare groove.
Sampling/cut and paste is an art in which it’s not terribly difficult to separate the lazy slobs from the masters, i.e. being able to differentiate from someone who can lift a song wholesale and slap something new on it and someone who can hear a really interesting sound within another piece of music and re-purpose it in a way that makes your ears (and brain) perk up in admiration.
One of the dangers of trainspotting is that the listener runs the risk of getting lost in the component parts, losing sight of the forest for the digitally borrowed trees.
However, secure in the knowledge that good taste is sometimes its own reward, the best samples sound as good (or better) in their original form as they do when placed as a cog in another ‘machine’. Often (not always, obviously) groovy bits of sound are not sui generis, and are traceable back to an equally groovy “whole”, which is the case in the music I bring you today.
I like to think that the first time I had my mind blown by ‘Paul’s Boutique’ or ‘Check Your Head’ my crates (and ears) were deep enough that I recognized some of the coolest stuff, but at the same time I’m honest enough to admit that the ensuing years witnessed my recognition of some of that music for the first time (like the time my man Marshall down in DC dropped Jimmy Smith’s previously unknown – to me – version of ‘I’m Gonna Love You Just a Little Bit More Babe’ and the light bulb went off over my head).
It was in those moments of recognition that new digging targets were registered and I followed them into flea markets, record stores on onto the interwebs.
The cuts I bring you today are examples of some of my favorite Beastie Boys samples (drums, bass and guitar) out of my crates.
Some of them were things I already had, others, like the bass in ‘Big Sur Suite’ and ‘Yo Yo’ or the guitar in ‘Machine Gun’, I picked up first and discovered/recognized the sample(s) after the fact.
What all of them have in common, aside from the fact that they appealed to the Beasties, is that they are all worth listening to in their entirety.
Maybe some of you will be hearing the complete songs for the first time.
I hope you dig them all, and I’ll see you later in the week.
Keep the faith
Larry

Pushin’ Up The Daisies Festival’s Mix of Musical Stylings Raises Money for Historic Cemetery
By Jim Testa • May 14th, 2012 •
The Historic Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery came alive for Pushin’ Up The Daisies, an all-day benefit on Saturday, May 12 that transformed the solemn memorial park into a joyous festival with music, food, and dancing, as a multi-generational crowd of hundreds enjoyed a picture perfect Spring day. Eileen Markenstein, who has led the volunteer crusade to restore and preserve the grounds, said it best: “This is the way this place should feel,” she proclaimed to the multi-generational crowd. “Cemeteries are for living!”
Organizer Dancing Tony Susco announced that the benefit had raised $3,500, which will go to much-needed repairs as well as routine maintenance of the centuries old cemetery, which receives no private or government funding and is entirely dependent on contributions.
The day started under bright sun and good spirits in the early afternoon, featuring ten local bands who volunteered their time to perform for the crowd. As children scampered around the grounds and older patrons explored the historic monuments – some of which date back to soldiers of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars — the crowd enjoyed a mixed bag of folk, country, soul, Latin, and rock n’ roll.
New York City’s Scott Wolfson & the Other Heroes kicked off the day with folk-influenced pop. Jersey City’s Ace Case, usually the king of sarcastic country swing with his own group, displayed a more earnest side with his new project the Gully Hubbards, with James Dower and Amy Elise. Another Jersey City-based group, Leaf Pile, delivered a set of pretty indie-pop, highlighted by violin and lovely male/female vocals. Brooklyn’s Bob Parins and his trio entertained the crowd with sophisticated set of tunes that combined the best of 60’s pop and Great American Songbook classics.
The Awkward Girls revved up the energy level with their old-school punk rock attack, recalling the era of Black Flag and the Descendents with a no-nonsense delivery heavy on attitude and tattoos. Jersey City mainstay MrBlackman Junestar mixed hip hop and soul in a project called Winner Takes All Collective, while local folksinger Deivis “Deivito” Garcia and friends brought a funky Latin flavor with their group, the United States of Bugaloo. The Nico Blues and Cicada Radio followed with strong sets of original indie rock.
After the sun had set, Jersey City punk rockers Wyldlife finished the night with a fiery set of rock tunes that culminated with a tribute to the recently deceased Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys, as the entire crowd rocked out and sang along to “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party).”
During the day, the crowd enjoyed barbecue from Lucky 7’s Tavern and baked goods from Made With Love; between live sets, DJ’s William McCamie and ScottFREE entertained the crowd with mixes of classic new wave and punk. Brennan’s Flower Shop donated dozens of potted mums, which were sold as Mother’s Day gifts to also benefit the cemetery.
Anyone interested in volunteering or contributing to the Historic Jersey City & Harsimus Cemetery can contact Eileen Markenstein at www.jerseycitycemetery.org.

adam yauch dies
> The Beastie Boys 1992 album Check Your Head soundtracked the period in my life when my closest freindships were formed. My freind Bob brought the tape into our smoky college common room one hazy afternoon and from the minimal black and white cover alone, I knew this was something new and different.
At that time we were all too skint to be part of the dominant youth culture of the time - namely popping esctasy and going to techno raves. And even if we did have fifteen pound for a pill and the rest of the money needed to get to raves, none of us would have been into it. So when I opened up the multilayered inner sleeve of CHECK YOUR HEAD and soaked in the DIY mish mash of collages of what looked like a bunch of mates who spent loads of time just hanging out, I saw a mirror of what we were doing at the time (minus making groundbreaking music)
> > And the music was like nothing that wed heard before. Theyd had another album out calls PAULS BOUTIQUE that some really cool kids talked about, but this was the first time most of us had such an incredibly groovy mix of rap, rock, comedy and meditation on two sides of tape. Each song was at once simple and dense with layers that even now, twenty years later something new will pop out. The album opens with a shuffling hip hop beat looping in over what I later found out was a jimi hendrix sample. “People how you doin there’s a new day dawning” begins the rap of the now deceased member Adam Yauch, prophetic words indeed “Call the earth mother its a brand new morning” he goes on. And it was a new day…
On one level The Beastie Boys had harnessed a spirit of independence and expressed it creatively in a way that inspired many of the people in that common room. Some of us went on, like myself to become directors, others became writers, and notably some of us who discovered that album became the band Elbow. Because it is a work of art so inherently born of a long term freindships, CHECK YOUR HEAD was the validation we needed that what were doing at the time - mainly spending hours each day hanging out with each other - was worthwhile and productive.
> > I remember summer days spent in that common room with that album on repeat, and in the evenings hanging out in car parks, CHECK YOUR HEAD was the album that got the party started, the album we headbanged to, the album we breakdanced to, the album we watched the sun come up to and the album we set the world right to.
As well as effortlessly blending genres, we could actually afford to wear what they wore. Puma States trainers at the time were being sold on the sale rack at TIMPSON in Bury for 7.99. A year later they were 39.99 at JD Sports. The Beastie Boys helped us understand what we believed in and showed us how we could express our beliefs and succeed. For the kids of my generation, the passing of Adam Yauch is a sad day. > > Irshad Ashraf is a documentary director. www.irshad.tv > > > > > > IRSHAD ASHRAF > > www.irshad.tv

Adam was a true American saint.

First negative comment I have seen was on this article. Attacking Adam and the boys for their early day lyrics. Whatever. Still a great piece about his activism.

here's something that wasn't made for Yauch specifically but nonetheless, was made by my good friend and yours truly, ferrisbueller2000, some time ago.
it only has about 200 views so obviously people haven't seen it
