You know how they have those honorary street signs in NYC, paying tribute to various notable people? Well, we should start a campaign to get a street named after Yauch! After all, he did help provide the soundtrack to the 5 boroughs. He painted a picture of NYC that made people from all over the world admire the city. That, and his peace activism made him such a tremendous ambassador for NYC. I looked up what the requirements are to get a street named after you and found this:

"New York City Council has the power to propose a change in street name, and in fact has done so numerous times. A "street naming" bill is proposed, discussed, and disposed of, one way or the other. The Mayor of New York City must sign the bill.

Requirements for Street Re-naming: According to the City Council, "proposed honorees must be individuals who are deceased and of significant importance to New York City."

I think Yauch fits this bill, what about you? Maybe a street in Brooklyn, since he was from there?

I'm not from NYC, but still I think that it's pretty early for this. Leave it for his 50th birthday. It'd be perfect by then.

the last batch of names to honor (over 50) was introduced to NY City Council this time last year, between June and July.

so with the recent State Resolution and statement from NYC Mayor Bloomberg, it should be a question of "when" rather than "should".

I see any block in Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn being fair game for Adam Yauch Way. it looks like Ludlow and Rivington already has one.

a recent petition for George Carlin on 121st st. raised some controversy since it was down the block from a Catholic Church. the movement hasn't gained any steam and there's nothing pointing to the direction of this thing happening. Carlin passed in June '08.

I think Avalanche's idea is a good one. For it to happen for Yauch's 50th birthday would be awesome. I don't know how long these things take to get passed, but I really don't see any reason as to why the City Council wouldn't do it.

And yes, they should have one for George Carlin also!

I had a fan ask me on twitter about a statue memorial in Brooklyn. Too far? It's neat to see all of these people really wanting to be involved with honoring this great man. :o

But hey I love the street idea. I will petition and do whatever if it's what we decide on doing as a collective group for Adam.

this is a fantastic idea and all though I'm on the west coast I'd fully do what I could to help this happen. It should be in Brooklyn.

Agree! What's even more cool about this is that this is Brooklyn, not obsessed Beastie fans. The love they have for him makes me smile. :) I'll support it. I want to see something happen for Yauch, something tangible.

59 Chrystie Street should be renamed.

totally. the intersection of chrystie and hester would make an awesome "beastie boys place" someday.

since yauch was born in downtown brooklyn (brooklyn heights) that area makes sense. maybe around st anns, like mike d's blimpies on montague st and/or the fulton mall for the sneakers on his feet.

i also read that adam grew up on state street -- probably the most beautiful street in the heights.

or 100th and Broadway, for their first gig on yauch's birthday.
