Or maybe they wanted to end it like that.

Was hoping for a show announcement... Oh well
Great album
A very clever marketing thing to have the record listening party at Madison Square Garden broadcast over the internet.
Someone said "Their production skills have increased tremendously since TT5B"
The new album's production is a lot better than TT5B but I could have produced TT5B on a Casio keyboard in Radio Shack. I don't think they were going for anything beside bringing it back to the early 80's on that album. Their production skills were on top notch when they did "Hello Nasty".
"this is the best reason i've woken up to an alarm in years."
That's awesome!!
"is anyone else shocked that there aren't more viewers on the livestream? I'd expect that counter to blow up!"
I think more people would have if they knew exactly what the BBoys were gonna do..
"I'm not sure that counter is all that accurate. I've seen it go backwards."
Those were people who weren't feeling it..
"So baked... This may enter my top 2 favorite albums and the shit aint even over yet."
That is because you are so baked. Listen to it straight, that'll change.
"one of the best OF ALL TIME."
I wouldn't go there.. unless you are comparing it to the other 8.. Then it is in the Top 10.
"dare I say, perfection?"
WHAT??? Ok seriously people.. This album is pretty good but you're already saying it is their best and that it is perfect? I mean, it is gonna sound even better when you hear it out your speaker minus the MSG echo etc.. but.. Some of the same people who said TT5B was their best are saying it again about this one and that album kinda.. wasn't that great.
"I preferred MCA's original rhymes on TMR, but over all its sounding better."
Agreed. The originals were lodged in my head forever already..
Overall, I see this debuting at #1 but not staying their too long at all which make it a cult classic fast. The Beastie Boys have thier own style of music. This is not the same Hip Hop they play on the radio, this is better. But people don't get it. You WONT hear this on many Hip Hop stations but WILL hear it on your college radio stations.
By the way, dudes listening to it at WI-Fi spots in cafes and in their cars out in LA is pretty impressive. I salute you.

Multilat is too dope. I'm half loving the fact it's instrumental, half disappointed they didn't have a crack at rhyming over it. Shit would need it's own cadence, with nothing less than 100% focus; it's one of the best beats they've ever come up with.

I wanted to reiterate what I told my friend... I think the Beasties didn't want you-tube to be the place that premiered their album and so I think they thought okay how can we turn that around and get some control over this and so the live listening party idea was born. I think it's brilliant and I am so happy for them because I felt bad each day reading their messages "We wanted you to hear it from us first, or okay since the bad rip is out here is our version." I was on the hub back in the day. Haven't been on it for year's. I tried to connect but can't and can't remember how to change the setting to to make it work etc. (it was always kinda a pain in the ass).
So who's gonna share an mp3? I need some Hot Suace on the I-Pod and in the car!
Oh and I already bought the $90 deluxe and the $20 Beast Buy CD and Tee package, plus I'll pick up a $13 copy at midnite May 2nd from my local inde record shop... so I'm all for supporting the artist

Just got done separating all the tracks from the livestream. I wanted to be able to listen to them on my ipod wherever i go, because it's all that i'm going to be listening to until May 3rd haha.
The quality sucks and is no substitute for the real thing, it's like listening to a bootleg concert somebody recorded, since it was just a boombox @ center court. But it will do the job until our CD's come.

"Still got mad love for a record called 'Beat Bop.'" Me too, Adam.
I really, really like this album. I think it's as good as anything they've ever done. Obviously, it doesn't have the collage sample-based aesthetic of a Paul's or Check Your Head, which is my own personal musical sweet spot, but I love it nonetheless. I've been listening to the livestream steadily since 10:35 am. Eventually, I'll have to stop and get something to eat.
Just want to say thanks for sticking it out and making this album. Hope they're as happy with it as I am.

10. Long Burn The Fire
Ad-Rock is in combative mood here, boldly offering “I check my rear view/Emcees ain’t getting closer”, while a superhero-ish element imagines biting through haters with sharks teeth, clawing them with tiger’s claws and shooting poison out of their eyes. Rage Against The Machine-worthy bottom end and rampant organ seal the deal.
Disputes the notion one of the recent reviews brought up regarding MCA penning these lyrics in regards to his own mortality.

Does anyone else know where the "Roller Rink down in Virginia" is?
I do.
Newport News, VA.....I live in Chesapeake, VA which is next to Norfolk and Virginia Beach..Newport News is about 12 miles from me across the water.
I've heard the story around here and I've seen Mike D talk about in an interview he did with Pharrell Williams.
What was the actual rink though? I love how he says my homestate though, he did on the Get Out and Vote Tour too, when they played Richmond...VirGINIA!

just double dipping here now with a pair of headphones. I didn't realize that the quality was as bad as it is..and this is good! I listened to it with my wife and kids this morning over computer speakers so didn't expect much then...or was really sure that it was just the mic capturing the box we were hearing. The whole thing is just fully raw.
Now I can spin this guilt free knowing that the full fidelity mix is going to be a million times better and just as much a treat.

Loving this record!
Love how each track seamlessly flows into the next one. The beats are all really different and 10x better than TTFB. The album has that great organic sound they've always brought. It sounds like something that would have came out between IC and HN - distorted vocals mixed with spacey, electro beats.
The whole record sounds really colorful and there's never a dull moment. Noisy as all hell and I love that.

Great podcast, as usual. I'd like to hear about the self-sampling from the band themselves, because they've only intimated that it was them playing and sampling that. It's never really seemed like they were old sessions, but somebody could be confused and it's not all from stuff they played in 2008.

I have actually heard some scratching and "electrical tweaking" sounds that are from CYH on these new HSC P2 songs.
they are used kinda like beds underneath the other tracks of the song at times and other times are more apparent in the song and im quite sure it is the same tracks used on CYH that were used or "sampled"
I will find them again when I listen today or tomorrow and identify them and post them so that you can compare the songs from CYH with the songs from HSC P2 that have the same tracks/loops in them.

its the scratching in " say it "
its through out the whole song BUT you hear it best during the chorus. give a listen to the chorus of 'say it". the scratching should sound familiar.

OKAY
listen to Jimmy James off CYH.
listen to the scratching in the beginning of the song before they start rapping
and at other points through out jimmy james
its scratching and cutting of electrical distortion
same used on "say it" or def. derivative/sample of it.
im going from memory right now cause cant listen but i also think one of the CYH singles had that on it.
any way maybe others will have input or different opinion.

It's the same scratch, likely done by MCA. I think your ears are tricking you on any other tip. But what do I know? One of the versions of So Watcha Want also had a similar cut. I would be interested in other people's opinions; I disagree to the point of not adding much value. Interesting thought though (y)

wait so you saying MCA repeated the same scratch melody ... on this new album ... but .. he did not use the actual audio from CYH ?
one thing is for sure which i was saying it is def. derivative sound/style from CYH and that id bet is pretty intentional
and in my opinion it is probably same audio used from DAT of CYH that they used and sounds different with different production used for this album.
i guess i could sample them in Logic and place the audio files next to each other to see if they have the same sound waves etc ...

It's the same scratch, not the same sample or same audio from CYH, similar atonal high pitch. Come on, man. Really?
It's derivative because it's just his/their style; Long Burn sample is given the same treatment, even the new synth on Too Many Rappers.
You could be right, I'm not going to speak in absolutes, but I have ears and I'm not hearing it. Similar, sure.
Here's a concept....most of us already dropped $90 on it. It's available to hear as streaming audio. What's the harm in wanting to capture if for personal enjoyment then? Not a damn thing. Now if you wanna make copies and sell it or post it all over torrent sites, that's another story.
Because not everyone in the world pre-ordered it. If it is available for FREE, a lot of people will not purchase it. PLUS not everyone is gonna feel this CD. Your making copies thing is dumb, who would make copies? All you would have to do is post a link and a million people could download it.
not because its new and fresh to my ears, this album is the best thing they've done since PB and CYH.
This is not better than "Hello Nasty".
Here's a concept, stfu and click logout. As pshabi said I already dropped 90. So before you call people who use Megaupload cheap why don't stop and think about how dumb you sound. The boys are streaming their own album so do you think it matters if people have an mp3 of that? No.
Again, read what I just wrote. And if the band wanted to make it available to download, they would have.
Nah I think it was playing off that box. Maybe controlled by whoever was running the camera angles. Don't think it was the Boys down there, could be wrong though.
I am sure it was playing THROUGH the box but the sound you hear is not from inside MSG. In an empty MSG, that would sound echo like crazy.
I burned it and I had a lot of driving around to do today so I had it in the car. The quality sounds like it was recorded through a beat box blaring fucking loud at MSG! It does NOT sound like a beat box... and again, I didn't say YOU were stealing it. I said it is stupid to upload it to megaupload because then it is FREE to everyone. How fair is that to you people that shelled out your paychecks for the box sets?

hey fair enough ... we don't have to agree i respect your opinion.
BUT to me the derivativeness is not because it's not just their style ...
this kinda of scratching is derivative of CYH ... just like the mic distortion is too.
for example when you hear it you don't really think of TT5B or LTI or even PB for that matter. thats what makes some of the songs derivative of CYH and IC to me.
I am also sure I am not the only one who thinks they did try to return to that sound on some of the tracks on this album ...
its not just one big coincidence ... even lee majors etc ... so what i am saying is that some songs do sound derivative of CYH and they would accomplish that by using similar beds and scratch samples and also similar break beat percussion & clearly similar mic distortion like on CYH . and even IC.
also there is another song that has mca vocals with same effect that was used on HN.
Seriously, this is the album Hello Nasty should have been. It actually is boggling my mind in real time that they could accomplish this right about now.
And Kevin I think it is coming out of that box, right into those there micrey-phones
It's absolutely not coming out of that box into those microphones. Have you ever been to MSG, that would sound like it was going through a long ass hallway. Regardless, extremely clever idea on the BBoys part..
"Hello Nasty" would have been the perfect Hip Hop album if they didn't add the weird shit on there... The beats on the first two tracks alone on that album killed almost everything that has come out after in Hip Hop period.

Now you've turned it into two different points.
It's obviously derivative or harks to a time past in some ways, but it has an identity on the whole pretty far removed from that era, superficial similarities aside. Lee Majors is evocative of that era, sure, but they never rapped on a live (sounding - Sir Skratchalot) track like that for instance.
To your original point, I don't hear the same exact DAT/Source shit from those albums at all as far as a bed for the songs, be it scratches, beats, whatever. That's what I gathered you were originally trying to argue.
This is much more like a culmination of everything they've done, and it's interesting people aren't exploring it in their minds as more than just distorted mics. To each their own, interesting perspective.

I don't think the album is derivative of CYH or IC. Yeah, they are sampling their own playing again, and yes there is the distortion on the mics. But overall it creates a different vibe in my mind. There's plenty of songs which sound pretty unique to HSC - Ok and Don't Play...for example. There are bound to be similarities in sound and types of samples, it's the same fucking people making the record. But it's too much of its own beast for me to be a premeditated attempt to 'return' to the sound of those early records. For me, and this an early assessment, it seems to encompass most of what they have done up to this point, but with an extremely focused and driven energy in terms of pushing forward. I also like the fact that there will not be another record - mainstream at least - which willl sound anything like HSC this year.

maybe some CYH outtake samples here or there, but just because they like to terminate fuzz-bass lines on the mixer and use distortion from the radioshack variety mic doesn't mean they can't do it again. it's not impossible or oftentimes even difficult to recreate tones and effects. to assume that they sampled CYH to the extent you're talking is foolish.
also, I'd imagine the sound we were hearing was in fact coming from that boombox. A) hyper-cardioid directional mics at such a point blank distance would help pacify alot of the reverb, as i assume these are. B) if the boombox was played at a nominal level it wouldn't be NEARLY as reverberant as say a full band over a PA blasting out into the Garden, as I imagine you're comparing this too. And C) what would be the point of renting out MSG and staging such a setup simply to use an alternate sound source in the end? the bboys are as practical as they come.

I'm pretty happy that it never got leaked before the live listening party. If it did I would have heard it all already and it wouldn't have been so special.

[QUOTE=Kid Presentable;1759224]Now you've turned it into two different points.
.
To your original point, I don't hear the same exact DAT/Source shit from those albums at all as far as a bed for the songs, be it scratches, beats, whatever. That's what I gathered you were originally trying to argue. [QUOTE=Kid Presentable;1759224]
well wait ...
i think this discussion began because another poster said that he heard on a podcast from key board money marks brother that they used samples and stuff from CYH era ...
All i was saying was i can kinda see that and had heard some scratching that seems like it is from CYH like the scratch bed in "Say it"
then as our discussion evolved and I replied to your comments I made other points about it not being a coincidence [ like "MCA doing all scratching so it sounds the same"] that certain things and sounds are similar to CYH on SOME songs!
[QUOTE=Brother McDuff;1759244]maybe some CYH outtake samples here or there, but just because they like to terminate fuzz-bass lines on the mixer and use distortion from the radioshack variety mic doesn't mean they can't do it again. it's not impossible or oftentimes even difficult to recreate tones and effects. to assume that they sampled CYH to the extent you're talking is foolish. okay that is all i said in the first place was that it did sound like that maybe some CYH samples or "outakes" were used or re used on "Say it" and maybe other songs
foolish ? - what "extent" I only said some songs. I made it clear that other songs have completely different and new styles.
to think that im saying just because "say it" is inspired by CYH styles means that I dont realize that the album has its own unique identity and evolution of styles is really jumping to conclusions and getting carried away maybe even acting a little foolish.
It is, bands don't soundcheck in full venues, and nah you're high.
Ok.. here is what I want you to do. Get a large radio and go to a building in your community that has a large hallway.. play TT5B CD loudly so that the speakers bounce.. stand about 100 feet away... tell me what you hear... and what do you mean bands don't soundcheck in full venues?
..and by the way, the whole CD is on mediafire and those places in edited form (no swears).

the microphones picking up the signal were inches away from the speakers. 100 feet would be a whole other story.

here's my theory: it's like saying "little mike d" in italian. knowing he has some italian friends and goes there semi-frequently.
i lived in italy for 6 years and people called me xavino (from xavi i.e. little xavi).

yo. im really feeling this track too. top 2 or 3 for sure.
drums/percussion/beat in this are so sweet ...
not to get into more speculation on here BUT lol
i think the part of the drum is sampled from Incredible Bongo Band - Apache
or just reminds me of it in some way ... which either way is fresh.
