Way too early to tell. The best I can say is that I know I like it better than TT5B, and I think I'll end up liking it better than Ill Communication (too much hardcore and basically just inferior to CYH). I'll probably go back and forth on Hot Sauce and Hello Nasty as number 4 behind the first three records, depending on what kind of mood I'm in.

The thing I love about this record is that it just screams Beastie Boys. No one else could make a record that sounds like HSC.

It's number two for me at the moment, and it's also pulled The Mix Up up the ranking for me now, since that album birthed the quality playing on this one. So Hello Nasty is at the bottom of my list.

If you appreciate the BBoys musical talents, you have to rank it high. Although MCA says his rhymes age like wine, I'd say that is more true of their prowess with their instruments. So in that regard it is above them all. But CYH and IC were really complete albums from head to toe that they have to be 1a and 1b. I'll give it up to the Dust Bros and the lyrics on PB by saying it is 2 because they did some sick shit on that album. But then I'd go HSC, HN, LTI, and then TTFB. Honestly though, I'm leaning more towards PB and HSC as 2a and 2b but we'll see after 100 times around the juke box. I don't think you can include the mix up in this analysis bc it isn't a hip hop album so it's like apples and oranges.

I don't think that's it at all. Although the album is nasty, the BBoys have evolved to be so much more musically than a album of frat rhymes put to ripped off rock riffs. I rode on the school bus for years with LTI in my cassette player in the eighties. But I prefer listening to sick raps like So Whatcha Want and Pass the Mic mixed between trippy songs like Lighten Up and Something's Got to Give. The different styles really make them a more interesting and enjoyable musical journey. And that is also why HSC is so much better than TTFB.

Eh, I disagree. That Rick Rubin produced Def Jam style on LTI, Radio, and Raising Hell is some of the best hip hop ever made. Those also happen to be three of the best hip hop albums ever made.

1. PB always and forever, PB tops any art anyone's ever done (that includes you, Picasso!)
2. CYH everything about CYH was perfect to me, from the music (nothing short of groundbreaking) to the tour (saw them 4 times that summer) to their sense of humor and fashion...dusted perfection
3. LTI one of 80s hip-hop's gold standards and still impressive with each listen
4. IC the polished CYH; will always have a slight touch of meh because of the Seriousland direction they took in its aftermath
5. TT5B the W disses and 'we can change the world' moments are corny/stale, but only take up about 15% of the record; most of the shit on this is still superb
6. HSC2 for now; will prob overtake TT5B
7. TMU surprisingly potent
8. HN after all these years, still disappointing and bloated, though good for those 7 or 9 hip-hop classics

"Just a Test" – 2:12
"Body Movin'" – 3:03

"Putting Shame in Your Game" – 3:37
"Three MC's and One DJ" – 2:50
"The Grasshopper Unit (Keep Movin')" – 3:01
"The Negotiation Limerick File" – 2:46
"Electrify" – 2:22
"Unite" – 3:31

That removes 34:25 of stuff I don't need.

Brother McDuff

love it or hate it, you have to admit that HN was the bboys at full stride. they had solidified both their musical identity and status with the previous record, they were experimenting with more sounds and styles than ever, they had nothing left to prove (though that youthful fire was still burning strong), more time was being dedicated to their live shows, and the overall 'quality' of the productions were as sophisticated as they'd ever been. the songs were as fully realized and polished as they could be. dense and shiny, though still maintaining that bboy dirt.

to say they were at their 'peak' would be far too bold and arguable, but like I said, whether it's your cup of tea or not no one can deny that their collective artisitic and professional mind was running on all cylinders at this point, if not the most it ever has.

I can totally understand that - you're pretty much describing PB for me.

I think that in '98, after having been wowed over and over by them through the years (starting with PB; really, who in 1988 - if they were even thinking about the BBoys - expected them ever to top LTI?), I ended up just getting greedy and expecting them to keep giving me exactly what I needed. Turns out HM wasn't that. That's my problem though, not theirs (well it is kind of theirs, haha, I can't pretend I don't think I know better than they do - one of the pitfalls of obsessive fandom).

Yeah, thats a flaw with Hello Nasty. There were too many throwaway tracks that could have easily been b-sides or thrown out altogether. The reason I put it ahead of Ill Communication is because the best tracks are amazing, better than the best tracks on IC.

Check Your Head for the win, though. Its a perfect album.

HSC

CYH is supposed to be my 2nd favourite, but I only listen to around half of it these days. Too many years, too many spins; I can always throw it on for a good time. That won't ever change.

The new album has led me to get out my beasties back catalogue, whip the dust of those mother fuckers and reappraise them. I have to say I hold To The Five quite high in my beasties canon, its a fab album, doesnt try to hard, catchy beats and good rhymes.

Also The Mix Up, the album which has to be the least bashed beasties album for me turns out to be quite a rewarding spin.

The beasties can do no wrong. That is all.

I can say now I think its going ahead of Hello Nasty for me. Like someone said earlier, or maybe in another thread, Hello Nasty has a lot of incredible moments and a lot of tracks that I just skip outright. Thats not the case with the Hot Sauce. This might be their best since Check Your Head.

I think it goes something like this:

Check Your Head
Hello Nasty
Hot Sauce Committee Pt 2

I was having a hard time deciding if I like it more or less than Paul's Boutique, but then as I was making the list, I realized that I listen to The Mix Up so much, that it actually also might be above Paul's Boutique, though PB is clearly a more important and milestone album.
