View Full Version : I HAVE ACQUIRED THE COMPACT DISC!

I have held it in these very hands...
There's a Tsutaya (Kind of like the Japanese HMV or Blockbuster Video) on the ground floor of my office building, I just went down there and picked up the disc. There was a largish display with a nice big photo of Adam, Adam and Mike dressed as Japanese chefs, proffering a tray of noodles.
I can't upload pics because I am at the office and it would tarnish my professional demeanor. Maybe later.
The packaging is really nice...there's a carboard sleeve, from which you remove the gatefold. The gatefold folds out to eight panels, covered front and back with those pen illustrations of various heads. Mike D is one of the heads. Tucked away in the gatefold are a poster of the heads, with the lyrics on the back, a sticker of the cover artwork, and of course the CD, which comes in a polythene sleeve. Overall the packaging is very nice; simple and stylish.

yeah, that's strange. the MMM credit missing is obvious, but Money Mark? I feel like it was well publicized that he had been working with them. maybe im thinking of TMU. wasn't he the one that said the sessions were like Check Your Head, or was that in reference to TMU also? I may be getting my chornology confused.

Well at first I thought the 'there's a bird in here, that's my DJ....' and 'my DJ's so nasty he needs a sneeze guard' lyrics in Lee Majors must be in reference to Mike, but apparently not? Obviously, there's no lack of funky keys on the album that could conceivably have involved Mark, but again, no mention?
I'm pretty sure they've both been mentioned in interviews during the HSC era at some point, so I'm sure everything's cool.
Maybe they're just covering tour duties while they concentrate on their own stuff or something, but I couldn't help but notice that the two longest-serving/most integrated musicians outside of the trio were missing.

I was just listening to the album while reading the lyrics scans and i've noticed that the lyrics from the cd cover are wrong in a spot for MCA's 1st verse on Too Many Rappers. Anybody notice this?
have mc's over my house and fix em brunch
Lyrics from CD Scans: Invite MC's over my house and fix em brunch
So pass me the sword.. i'll start swingin'
just randomly choppin' on a crazy ass mission
Lyrics from CD Scans: Now pass me the sword...ill start swingin'
Precision slicin' on an exact mission.

Maybe they were written that way but rapped differently when recording unless they themselved didn't give the lyrics to whoever typed it. Lyrics always seem to be written differently then rapped with them at least. On my PB remastered CD there are random parts in some songs that are not even said when written or are just different.

yeah, I've found it's pretty common to find little differences here and there between the written and recorded lyrics on bboy records. happens more often than not, actually.
i kinda like the idiosyncrasies though, it adds just a pinch more excitement when following the lyrics with liners in hand.

i'm grateful for Ricky's contributions to the beastie boys legacy, there's no doubt he was a notable benefactor at one point, but I have to say I never cared for him much as a character. he always just seemed like your stereotypical a-hole new yorker (no offense to new yorkers in the least, he just embodies the mold of that specific, negative, ny stereotype).
i'm really not surprised that they didn't include him, for I'd say he kinda represents that rugged, biting persona the bboys have been trying to shed for almost 20 years now.
that's just me though. :o

and that's exactly how his slide show presentation came off...pretty much insulted the crowd and insuated that we were all hicks and rednecks because it's Virginia....maybe he though this was West Virginia?? Purposely changed his shoes into some white Puma clydes that he got from the man himself, proceeded to spill rum and coke on them.
I respect his legacy and the fact that he documented all the stuff that was happening in the hip-hop world in the mid 80's. If you saw him doing his comedian stuff opening for Beastie Boys on the CYH tour just imagine that for an hour backed by photos. He said some ill shit like Def Jam era stuff..Run DMC + Beastie Boys pics were cool. He had some random photos of girls he's met along the way and made comments like "she was on my dick" several times, "she a pretty tight pussy", etc. I felt sorry for the girl that looked a few years younger than bought her kids there but I wanted to be like you do know this Ricky Powell right?
I'm glad he's not associated with them anymore either...I immediately played "Song For The Man" when I got in my car after the debacle.
So where did he go off on the fact that he's not in FFYR? Link please.

Well I had a feeling the guys didn't want to associate with him anymore after watching that one interview last year where he talked about the Beasties running in his room while he was with some female. He focused a lot on those old days which is cool but his behaviour was so insane. It's like dude can you not say one foul thing. Mike and Adam wouldn't let their kids around that. I don't know but when the interviewer asked him about his relationship with them he said he sometimes runs into them on streets and it's pretty much hi and bye. And then he said that the guys have wives and kids and he's still well... damn now that I think about it I guess if the Beasties hadn't changed they'd be exactly like Ricky Powell! Ricky's a perfect example of Yauch's future BB's in the filmio.
