I know we’ve all been talking about the album and it’s future and Yauch’s health. The guys have made several comments in this interview about why Yauch hasn’t been present and how bad he wants to be fucking done with the cancer thing. HELL Yeah Yauch! (y)

Adam Horovitz was sitting on a balcony of the Chateau Marmont hotel in Los Angeles yesterday, contemplating the competing forces that motivate the Beastie Boys (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/artists/beastie-boys). "We think about music all the time and want to make records," Horovitz told Rolling Stone. "And we're also really lazy. So when desire and laziness clash, it just takes some time."

The latest result of that clash is Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, the Beasties' eighth studio album, released yesterday. While Horovitz – better known as Ad-Rock – smoked, his fellow Beastie Boy Mike Diamond (a.k.a. Mike D) ate chocolate mousse and explained the thinking behind the album. "We're not good at making plans," Diamond said. "But we do talk about ideas." Their goals for the album: vocals (2007's The Mix-Up was an instrumental album), shorter songs and "within any three-minute song, be willing to have it go six or seven different places before it ends."

"We don't have that many arguments," Horovitz said. "But lunch – the decision-making process takes forever."
Diamond sighed. "We labor a lot over the whole food thing."

Hot Sauce Committee Part Two was finished two years ago – but in 2009, the trio had started promoting the album in Europe when the third Beastie, Adam "MCA" Yauch, discovered he had cancer of the salivary gland. "That sent us all reeling," Diamond said, "both in terms of having your good friend and your bandmate diagnosed with cancer, and then also, oh, so our record isn't coming out. We'll just put this on hold and see where we're at in six months. And then 12 months."

The one silver lining: Stepping away from the album made them realize they weren't happy with the sound. They remixed the whole project with MC Solaar producer Philippe Zdar – and in the end, Diamond said, "We got to make a much better-sounding record."

Yauch was absent from yesterday's interview. "He's still doing treatment for cancer," Diamond explained. "Given the choice, he wouldn't be. He'd love to be freaking completely fucking done with it."

So the Beasties won't be touring anytime soon, but Yauch did write and direct the half-hour film (http://www.rollingstone.com/videos/new-and-hot/beastie-boys-fight-for-your-right-revisited-20110427)Fight for Your Right (Revisited) (http://www.rollingstone.com/videos/new-and-hot/beastie-boys-fight-for-your-right-revisited-20110427), which features Elijah Wood, Danny McBride and Seth Rogen as the Beasties circa 1986, and Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly and Jack Black as the Beasties of the future, challenging them to a dance competition. "Everybody gets really excited about Will Ferrell playing the cowbell in the video. But how badly did you want him and John Reilly to do shake-and-bake?" Horovitz said to Diamond. He shook his head, marveling. "Shake and bake."

So is there an age where the Beasties are too old to do what they're doing? The 44-year-old Horovitz snorted. "We passed that age awhile ago."

Cheers Jo, some really good stuff in that interview. I think:

"Given the choice, he wouldn't be. He'd love to be freaking completely fucking done with it."

...sums it all up. i am loving this album. But i think i'll love the day more when Yauch is completely fucking done with it. Get well soon MCA (y)

Yeah that’s why I made those mopey comments about how it’s bittersweet because Yauch can’t enjoy the release of his new album with his bandmates. And knowing how frustrated he is about it makes me sad. I would have rather the album just not come out till he was completely well but they have commitments and a record label breathing down their backs so I understand. But on the other hand he’s focusing completely on his health and that is how it should be because when he’s healthy again he can have his damn life back. It’s all I want! :o

Again - great find! Really good article, Angus Batey knows his shit. He did a biography on the band up til the release of Hello Nasty. It's a a decent read, he should do an updated version sometime.

I like the 'when' attitude towards Yauch getting better. He'll beat it. And I like how they're looking to the next record. It's also nice when you're a fan of a band and, without even being biased, you agree with or understand most of what they have to say.

Good shit.

great article from the guardian. I love when the beasties get real, and love it even more that it happens so infrequently. it's a real treat.

i go bananas whenever I hear the bboys refer to "the next record". i don't know if I'm just a cynic or bracing myself or what, but I'm always so fearful "is this gonna be the last one?". I need to get over that. these fuckers are made of music. they're never gonna stop. nonstop would be the word, I assume.

for a group known for reinventing themselves, just imagine how a brush with morality will affect their output.

much love MCA, take all the time you need. you're still in everybody's thoughts, daily. (y)

I agree it is a treat to read interviews like this. He’s definitely good! He knows how to ask the right questions in the right ways. Brilliant! Plus I just want to know THINGS are okay, so the comments on Yauch make me feel loads better. And you can tell how what happened really affected them and brought them all closer together, (if that’s even possible lol.) And I think another album will definitely happen. They seem to already miss being able to perform and so once Yauch is well we can just all continue with our lives. I feel like somebody pushed a great big pause button and I am patiently waiting for Yauch’s doctor to UNPAUSE it for us!
