So happy for the band. Link (http://hiphopboost.com/beastie-boys-to-sell-110k-in-first-week/) to first week sales news.

Yes yes ya'll. They deserve this! I bet it will brighten their day. :) And if record sales are really that low then it shows that Beasties still are a force to be reckoned with!

"For The Beastie Boys, it’s a strong return to form, yet also a demonstration of the music industry’s general sales decline. The group’s last rap album, 2004′s To The 5 Boroughs, was less well received, but sold 360,000 copies in its first week and eventually went platinum"

Thats crazy. A third what TT5B did in it's first week!?!

I wonder how they count the preorders on this....i would think its one digi, one CD and one album...so with my best buy CD I hope that I've got 4 on it!

This IS good news!

Everyones numbers are down these days, I don't think it says anything about the strength of the album or popularity of the "Boys". From what I can tell 110,000 albums is now a MASSIVE number to sell in a first week and tons of albums have debuted in Billboards #1 with less than 100k.

I was just surprissed at how much numbers are down in the industry even from TT5B days. Shit's crazy.

I'm betting the vast majority of first week sales happen on release day (tu in us) & pre-order. Probably going to be pretty right on.

The music industry has changed drastically in the 7 years since TT5B. Earlier this year, Cake's Showroom of Compassion debuted at #1 with only 44,000 copies sold, which pretty much sums up how bad it's gotten. Selling over 100,000 copies is a good thing in this day and age and the Beasties are definitely doing really well considering they're not making pop music and are older than most other artists in the top 10.

Well not just the record industry - but people's accessibility. There are disasters all over the world right now and I'm sure people aren't wondering what the latest release of the week is.

TT5B was a massive response to 9/11 for many fans, it was a huge morale booster type of release.

I believe the Beastie's relevancy goes well beyond Cake's and honestly Cake's latest release was a bore so I understand those numbers.

got to also take into account the semi lack of promotion for this. yeah they did the msg thing and had the dope video.

but everything got released so late and they didn't really do any appearances, tt5b had them doing that letterman street rap and all that other stuff . not to mention MSN is not a great 'single'. its a plenty good song, but its not like an intergalactic in that regard.

110,000 is low but thats comparing numbers to the way they used to be. verrrry few artists go platinum anymore.

this is the albums that have sold over 100,000 albums in 1 week so far this year...

1. Adele---21 (debut week, 3/12/2011 BB issue): 351,649
2. Britney Spears---Femme Fatale (debut week, 4/16/2011 BB issue): 276,446
3. Chris Brown---F.A.M.E. (debut week, 4/9/2011 BB issue): 270,381
4. Foo Fighters---Wasting Light (debut week---4/30/2010 issue): 234,527
5. Lupe Fiasco---Lasers (debut week, 3/26/2011 BB issue): 204,168
6. Wiz Khalifa---Rolling Papers (debut week, 4/16/2011 BB issue): 197,307
7. Adele---21 (week 2, 3/19/2011 BB issue): 167,950
8. Jennifer Hudson---I Remember Me (debut week, 4/9/2011 BB issue): 164,786
9. Justin Bieber---Never Say Never-Remixes (debut week, 3/5/2011 BB issue): 161,272
10. Adele---21 (week 9, 5/7/2010 BB issue): 153,000
11. Various---NOW 37 (debut week, 2/26/2011 BB issue): 150,796
12. Mumford & Sons---Sigh No More (week 48, 3/5/2011 BB issue): 132,793
13. Adele---21 (week 3, 3/26/2011 BB issue): 132,719
14. Adele---21 (week 10, 5/14/2010 BB issue): 124,000
15. Justin Bieber---Never Say Never-Remixes (week 2, 3/12/2011 BB issue): 101,811

so the beastie boys would bump biebers remix album and take the 15th highest selling week for an album so far this year. thats all genres all albums by the way.

Even though I know this empirically, it's another thing to see it manifest itself, with my favorite band no less!

As far as the Cake debut, it's not the quality of the album that matters in that example, so much as that only 44k in sales gave them a #1 album. Its a different world, and I guess not even the Beastie Boys can do a damn thing about it...

Do they count just physical CDs brought, or does it include CDs, iTunes, digital downloads? I'm a little bit confused.

You gotta admit, for an album handicapped by a noticeable lack of promotion and the ongoing health problems of one of the band members, debuting at #2 on the Billboard 200 is pretty impressive. I'll admit it now: I was afraid that the album sales would be much, much lower.

Having said that, I feel like this album won't be the one that introduces the Beastie Boys to a whole new generation of fans like To The 5 Boroughs did. Those Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, Lil' Wayne listening kids will go about their merry ways with no knowledge of this album's existence. You can't get really pissed off, though. The Beastie Boys just haven't been in places where the kids would see them.

Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 is an album for the loyal fans and the loyal fans only.

JoLovesMCA
05-06-2011, 03:06 PM
I think part 1 could have reached the kids today IF the Beasties had their band. I mean right now they don't have that! They can't do anything but make a few radio appearances and say yeah here it is hope ya like it! So yeah considering that I think the numbers are great too! The music have taken it pretty far so it shows they are undeniably loved by many. So yes this part 2 is for the real fans to enjoy but when Yauch gets better I know they’ll bring in loads of new fans and that is something to look forward to!

for guys that have been rapping since 1983 they put out an album that did something only 10 other artists have done all year. sell over 100k in a week. in 2011, 28 years after they first picked up mics.

all the other artists on that list did it selling predominantly pop music. all of them had their albums shaped by their record labels. something i can well and truly say the beastie boys did not.

the beastie boys sold a lot of albums in a genre that is particularly harsh on its elder generation in terms of album sales. i bet you could add up all the album sales from every other rapper from the 80s last album and it would not amount to what the bboys just sold in one week.

factoring in all the other reasons already said i think they have something to be proud of.

Just wanted to say you are totally right! Just read the news that JLO outsold the BB's but again it goes back to what you said. Plus with no promotion really? I mean imagine how it's gonna be when MCA is back and they can all three show their lovely faces together! :o

Whatever JLO I don't hate you but I am sure yours was an easy one to make. Also on that article I read (link below) they talk more about how poorly the music industry is doing. I mean I knew that but to keep hearing that is so sad!

She's pretty good. Not my cup of tea but one of those artists where she is just picking up hundreds of thousands of new fans every week. Tough to go against someone like that when you have been around for thirty years and aren't really promoting the album too heavily.

I know Adele holds the number one spot but the units sold looks so close so that to me says she’s not that FAR ahead of the BB’s.. Why is she number one on this list I linked but Beasties have a higher number? Can somebody explain?

Oh okay yeah it has to be a typo. I seriously believe that if the guys were able to perform, do a show together etc… they would have taken the number one spot. It’s why I am not too down about it because we don’t know what it could have been like with all three members of the band you know? Anyway I am still really happy the music is just basically speaking for itself! That Adele chic is on every damn show and radio on the planet right now.

I did go ahead and listen to her. She can sing for sure but she sounds like the other chics before her, Amy Winehouse etc… It’s not like I hadn’t heard that before. But anyway I can’t complain too much because she is talented. I am just being nice lol.

Those are not the final numbers. They're still counting the numbers and are only 53% finished. You have to wait until it says "final". The final numbers are usually posted at the end of Tuesday.

Plus they are still in the top ten all around the world.(y)
