Just heard Right Right Now Now playing in the background of a new commercial for The Hangover 2. Didn't expect to hear the boys on my tv! Noice(y)

Ok, so this kind of annoys me. Not so much the use of Beastie Boys songs in TV/film, but more-so because the band (especially MCA) have repeatedly stated they'd never licence their music out to film and tv yet continue to do so! Why say you'll never sell your music to producers and then let Sabotage be used in Star Trek?

I think you're reading into things.

"I might stick around or I might be a fad. But I won't sell my songs for no TV Ad."

I've never read or heard any of the band say that they wouldn't let their songs be played at a sporting event or be in a movie. If I'm wrong post the link.

Now, if you start hearing their songs for McDonalds or Walmart then you can call bullshit on them.

Otherwise... chill the fuck out.

Actually I'm fairly sure there's a quote in the book 'Beastie Boys: In Their Own Words' about this but my copy is at my parent's house. I remember people on the boards being pissed when, in 2005, 'Looking Down The Barrel of a Gun' was used by a network to advertise a TV show (I can't recall which one).

Well with those solid facts you got yourself a fine argument there! Case closed!

And, seriously... Who gives a fuck what the people on the boards have to say about when and who the B-Boys license their songs too?

It's not like they are shamelessly changing their songs to "You Gotta Fight For Your Right To Shop At Target!"

Star Trek was a no brainer. Did you see the Ch-Check It Out video? Did you see the hats they wore during the Pagent Tour? Have you checked out their lyrics? They are obviously Star Trek fans.

MCA's lyric could be interpreted a bunch a ways... Like I said, not selling out their songs to Walmart, McDonalds, yada yada...

Having their tunes played at a sports event or in a movie or movie trailer is another can of worms.

MCA also said that a Father had envy so he shot him in the head... Since, that never went down are you pissed about that too?

My point is that they say they don't want people to use their songs, but then they let them. Why would they let their songs be used to advertise a film but not on a TV ad?

I'm just saying. It's not as if I hold a grudge against them and refuse to buy their albums. I'm sorry you got so upset about all this.

Couldn't be bothered really.

I just think it's silly to hold someone to a vague song lyric that was made over 13 years go.

Or 7 years ago if you're referring to Triple Trouble.

honestly though, a TV ad is a ploy to sell something, a film is an artistic endeavor. enormous difference. until you unearth this so-called quote regarding the 'no-film' statement (which I highly doubt, seeing as the bboys have always been huge movie fans), all we have to go on is the "won't sell myself for no TV ad line". and further more, who gives a fuck? if they feel strongly enough about not letting someone use their shit then they won't. if they're down with it they will. shouldn't bother you in the least.

case closed.

"You Gotta Fight For Your Right To Shop At Target!"

LMAO. I would hate to ever hear a tv ad like that but the thought of that particular one is hilarious!

I agree, movies and tv commercials are two very different things. TV Commercial=selling out. Movies are just like Music, both are creative outlets. Sometimes they can influence each other and when that happens it just shows that certain songs or movies can do more than just provide entertainment at face value. The fact that the Boys have created inspiring music for decades, cool and unique short films, and also letting movies use BBoys music to inspire them make the Boys an even talented group than they already are.
