Thanks Ben and Dan for the footage. Really cool project. Looks like your family were good sports about it too. Did you have to bribe them? :D
Always thought G-Son studios is to Beastie Boys fans what Abbey Road studios is to Beatles fans.
Would have been amazing to be back there in 94.
Dan did you end getting any of that rare beastie memorabilia when you were there back in 94?

Wow nice job man, thanks for putting this together. I was living in the LA area mid 90's, but never made it out here. I was lucky enough to make it to the XLarge store around 94 (i was about 17 at the time) and feeling like i reached the holy grail. Wall to wall adidas, suede pumas, grand royal gear, Ricky Powell books, record store upstairs with Ill Communication on vinyl.
Beastie Boys are so identifiable with New York but this all seems so much more significant. I know a couple other fans too who made the trip years later, and all seem to have that Mecca type experience.
There doesnt seem to be much footage of that whole era from G-Son but you did a nice job putting it all together here. Your family was real cool about taking a disney detour too. Hoping to get out there real soon myself. Thanks.(y)

yeah, their allegiance to NY is so strong that many don't realize just how significant LA was to their development. NY may have been where they established their tastes and career, but I honestly feel that LA is where they "became who they were gonna be" so to say. Paul's Boutique through (1/2 of) Ill Communication was when they locked in on their sound more than ever. The bulk of their best records had a solid foot (if not both) firmly planted in LA.
I'd say no other specific location, even within the boroughs, could bear any sort of 'Mecca' title more fittingly than the Atwater stomping ground.

I didn’t see this before yesterday and I tweeted it to a lot of fans to check it out. I love stuff like this. And I agree about L.A. PB is my second favorite album or should I say super duper close to LTI. I really really think that album did help define and develop them as musicians. Every time I watch something on PB era it’s all about the music and experimentation.
And I know we didn’t get tours and big things like that but it seems it turned out perfect because it was a great time just to really have a chance to hone in on their skills and develop all of these new sounds which then bled into their next albums.
I wish I were older to have actually gone to a lot of this stuff. Those who have though thanks for sharing!!

Hey Everybody ,
Thanks for the Compliments on the Atwater Years Video. There were actually 8 of us on the trip - but my wife , sister , niece & nephew declined to be in the video. My 2 little boys & my Dad were really good sports about the whole thing though. I don't think the other family members really understood what the G-Son Studios fuss was all about. That's OK though we all really had a good time on the trip. When I got back and started piecing everything together I never envisioned how fun the project would be. I had so many ideas of what I thought would be cool to see on video , and it just started coming together. Then I remembered a video that Dan ( Thunder D ) had sent me 17 years ago and I had to include that. His original video is actually almost 1 hour long , but I trimmed it down just a bit ( and called it Extra Bonus Footage ). All the other footage came from my archives from Beastie tapes and dvd's that I have been collecting for the last 20 - 24 years. I often wonder if the Beastie Boys will ever see the Video and check out this tribute that I made to them. But we will never know !

It is pretty interesting to think about their first record fully back to NY (Hello Nasty) being much more fast-paced and volatile, much like their surroundings.
This was a great project, and I had fun watching. Really does make you appreciate just how important LA was to those guys for a long time. Check Your Head was 100% LA and 100% my favorite Beasties album.

Thanks to Ben for putting this together and Im glad some of my footage is still making the rounds. Still need to dust off that vhs tape and transfer to dvd. Also good to see some of us "old farts" are still in the game all these years later.
Peace and Respect,
Thunder d!

Yo I remember like this past year the g-Son studios for sale on craigslist or something. The ad all mentioned the B-boys time spent there. Anyone else see that? Maybe someone on these boards bought it :D

G'day Porkys1982!
Can I say: THANK YOU for all your videos! I am holidays at the moment and I have just finished watching ALL your Vimeo vids. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed them! Coverage of the boys is pretty poor in Australia, so I hadn't ever seen a lot of what you uploaded. We didn't even have MTV until, like, 10 years ago! It is so cool that people like you taped that stuff for all those years, so that we can all see it now! It must have taken you absolutely ages to edit it all but you have done a fantastic job. You COULD have just let those vids sit on your shelf but instead you took the time to share them with all of us out here in Beastieland. I just thought somebody should give you props!
THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU!
My favourite one was the Atwater years video that you mention on this thread - it absolutely "flipped my wig back" (as Yauch would say!). What I want to know is:
1) how did Thunder D get inside there in 1994?
2) and how did YOU get inside there last year?
Did you guys have some super secret password that made the doors fly open?
We gotta get you two to go to NYC and make some videos there! (Does anyone know if Three Monkeys has reopened after the fire?)
Once again, THANKYOU for all the time you took putting those vids together. You are a credit to our entire organisation!
Love from, MsPacMan723
xoxo
PS. Thunder D – if you read this: I think the Beasties would really love to see your video. They’d probably get all nostalgic. Thankyou for sharing!

No Problem MsPacMan , You Are So Welcome. It Is A Pleasure To Share The Beastie Boys Videos From My Collection. I Don't Know If I Will Ever Go To New York To Make A Video. Atwater Village Was Easy, Because I Only Live 6-7 Hours Away From There.
Going Back To " Beastie Boys ... The Atwater Years " Video, I Must Say I Had A Ton Of Fun Making That One. It Was So Cool To Be Able to Check Out What Used To Be G-Son Studios , & To Have My Kids There With Me Was The Untimate. Also Thunder D's Contribution Was The Icing On The Cake.
MsPacMan Thanks For The Kind Words , & I Am So Glad That You Are Enjoying The Videos.
