i was curious if people who haven't read the books are enjoying it

i'm absolutely loving it, but i've read the books, so for me, the joy is seeing all the characters and locations come alive. i think they're doing an excellent job of capturing the feel of the books (which is rough because the books are fucking gruesome at times but HBO is being very faithful), so i'm excited to watch it every week.

are you having a hard time keeping track of the characters or the plot at all? the series has a lot of characters and in the books, i think it's a little easier to keep track of who people are and what's going on because you can remember everybody's name and read things at your own pace (said pace being much faster on the TV show because a) it's TV and b) they have to cram a ton of plot into a fixed amount of space).

i'm glad you're liking it without having the books as a base though, i like that people uninitiated with the series are enjoying it based on this. definitely read the books if you get a chance, it just goes on like this, the whole time

i think the casting has been fucking brilliant for the most part. arya in particular was an amazing find. she's pretty much exactly what i imagined that character looked like in my head, so to find her, and to have her be a child actor who can actually act well...it was quite a find, kudos to the casting people.

i thought about making a thread for this as well but kept forgetting. i'm glad we have one! i love this series.

a word to the wise for people who haven't read the books: avoid spoilers! just do it. don't read spoilers

I pretty much agree with every single thing Bob just wrote.

I'm super excited for the new book to come out.
It's been what... six or seven years?

at the end of the fourth book, there's a note from GRRM saying something to the effect of "i wrote such a huge book i had to split it in half" and, here i'm quoting because i'm holding it in my lap, "...all the rest of the characters you love or love to hate will be along next year (I devoutly hope) in A Dance with Dragons..."

signed, "George R.R. Martin, 2005"

.....yeah

anyway, back to game of thrones

i love it, especially the casting, as i just said, but i'm still holding my breath a little on some of the characters

i'm not sure about tywin yet - in the book he's this cold, emotionless, calculating, implacable character who's famous for never smiling, but in the scene from the last episode, he seemed almost gruff and excitable. i was a little surprised by that. though he looked almost exactly like i imagined. maybe not as well shaved. there was a nice touch that i'm hoping they did on purpose - he was skinning and gutting an animal, up to his elbows in its insides, but he barely had a drop of blood on him after it was done. that kind of speaks to his character, more than his voice did, anyway. i suppose he's only had one scene so far though.

i'm also wondering about the hound, sandor. he was one of my favorite characters in the books, but i pictured him as being so much more monstrous, with a very snarly voice. in the show, he's just kind of an english dude with a big burn wound on his face. maybe i played him up in my head. anyway he hasn't had many scenes yet, i'm still giving him time.

i'm happy with how gregor turned out. that was one of the more otherworldly characters, they cast him well. i'm looking forward to more scenes with him.

i'm also happy they made dany 18. she would have some extra fucked up scenes if she were as young as she was in the book. i think even GRRM has said in interviews, "i wish i'd made her 18 to begin with. i don't know what i was thinking"

i think the casting has been fucking brilliant for the most part.

I'm blown away by the calibre of the performances in this series, it's like the entire ensemble is brilliant from top to bottom, but Peter Dinklage as Tyrion is the real standout for me. He's nailed the character absolutely perfectly.

I read the books a few years ago, and of course I'm super psyched for the fifth one next month, but all my friends who have never read them are loving the series too. It really is fantastically well done. I hope it gets George RR Martin a much wider readership, and I hope that prompts him to finish the sixth book in less than half a damn decade.

to be honest i was kind of worried at first when i saw they cast him, because he seemed like such a...safe choice, i guess? it's like, when you need a little person, you cast peter dinklage, he's very ubiquitous. but i guess that's just because he's an excellent actor, he nailed tyrion.

i had for some reason pictured tyrion as being much uglier and much fatter, but i think it's just because they keep calling him "dwarf" and i can't not picture an actual dwarf when they do that. in retrospect, looking like a tiny nobleman is pretty much spot on i suppose.

thanks Bob, I've been watching the HBO OnDemand companions that feature each major house and one on the minor houses within the realm. I learned a lot and caught up from these

but honestly the show drew me in from the get go and I think they are telling the story and introducing characters in a way that isn't too heavy fisted on the exposition...

there are so many great scenes that set up the exposition for someone like me who hasn't read the books, like Greyjoy's character getting called out by everyone reminding him he was a lackey for the House of Stark.

the entire scene introducing King Baratheon, the Lannisters, and the Starks all lined up for the King sets everything up.

I have watched each episode multiple times each week and have started the series over from the beginning, it's that good.

and I'm starting to pick up on some things that I missed out when I didn't know a Tyron from a Tyrion, Mountain from a Hound, etc...

I agree about the actors- particularly Dinklage as Tyrion "Do I look plump to you?" Lannister as well as the little girl Arya. the kid who plays Bran is pretty good too. the characters are just fantastic.

yeah the spoilers on the other forums are killing me.

stannis baratheon hasn't been on the show yet, has he? i'm dying to see how he gets portrayed, i always found him to be one of the more interesting characters.

though i can't remember if he's actually in the first book at any point. maybe he just gets talked about.

Stannis isn't in the first book. The second one opens with his story though.

Then again, Tywin Lannister isn't in the first book either, is he?

i thought he came in towards the end...though it's been a long time since i've read it, i may be thinking of scenes in the second one.

tywin, that is

The Dinaric Alps are the fifth most rugged and extensively mountainous area of Europe. They are formed largely of secondary and tertiary sedimentary rocks of dolomite, limestone, sand and conglomerates formed by seas and lakes that had once covered the area.

What's really crazy is that they have the average tallest people in the world.

so yeah, for anyone who hasn't read the book, that last episode was why people were telling you "don't read spoilers!" i mean, you should continue to avoid them, for sure, but that was the big one, that was the moment that really sets the tone for this series. nobody's safe, everybody's crazy, you just don't know what's going to happen.

it's pretty rad from here

what do people think of the actor for stannis? we obviously haven't seen much of him yet but i dunno, i kind of had the guy playing davos in mind, to be honest (with a little less beard). but we'll see! i also expected craster to be much swarthier. like that creepy greasy janitor guy from harry potter (i think)

i liked how i was able to pick out dolorous edd before he could even finish his first line. the casting on this show really is amazing.

even though i'm caught up on the books and know pretty much exactly what's going to happen to everybody, i'm still on pins and needles waiting for the next episode, they did such a fantastic job bringing it to life

Turchinator

because I didn't read the books, my notions are that the cast as an ensemble is superb. I really like the Stark kids as I mentioned last season, they are getting even better this season.

as far as swarthy goes, I think Walder Frey would fit that bill, and Balon Greyjoy as well. I love the Theon storyline from last episode.

We Do Not Sow.

Bob have you seen the Craster Dentistry meme going around?
I'll dig it up if you haven't seen it yet

loving the new series but its impossible to talk about due to people being at different stages and also those pesky book readers who know the score and its frustrating for them not to say anything.

but i will try and talk about it anyway without spoiling....much.

I was genuinely shocked as to what happened in episode 2.

I am fairly sure i know who did it.

I think episode 3 (we get to see it in about 10 hours) will be a slow one after all the shenanigans in ep 2.

i'm not happy with what they had jaime do in the latest episode. i'm pretty sure that didn't happen in the book and now i think it kinda spoils his whole plot arc. in the book he goes from "brash lannister stooge" to "humbled and redeemed hero-type" (we see this journey in the show up till now so that's not a spoiler!), but i think that the whole "i just raped my sister in front of our incestual son's dead body" thing is going to make that journey hard to complete at this point! so i guess the show's jaime is going to be quite a different person, as if this series didn't have enough rapey villains in it already

i was very pleased with the final scene, though. dany just gets more hardcore by the day.

Bob

(SPOILERS FROM LAST NIGHT)

i feel like every time jaime was in a scene in last night's episode, the show was asking me to quietly forget about that one scene he was in in last week's episode

you can't just rape your sister and still expect me to like you jaime, somebody should address that!

was the rape scene in last week's episode a deleted scene that accidentally made its way into the show or something? did an intern screw up? was that not supposed to be there?

was going to talk about this but i thought you had read books so now i am not sure what i have to say is relevant.

also, as someone who caught up by watching first three series on dvd in about a month, watching it on the telly is shit.

I have to put up with breaks and then a picture of a deconstructed Volvo and a voice asking "what makes a quality production?". I'll tell you what, no fuckin adverts

i read the books but jaime definitely wasn't a rapist in them.

honestly i forgot about that scene with him and cersei in joffrey's tomb entirely, but the blogs are telling me it was a weirdly tender moment of consensual (incestual) sex and i believe them. there was no good reason to turn it into a rape scene and honestly it kind of throws off jaime's entire character arc, but the show seems to be pretending that it doesn't, and it's putting me off.

i still like the show but that was definitely a terrible, terrible scene

I meant that as i hadnt read the books I didnt know if there might have been an end product to that scene, a living breathing end product.

But now i think about it, if you think about it, the first time we saw them having sex, it all kicked off a major part of the story and then they were separated for a long time so maybe this was to signify another turn in the story (as they clearly have different feelings for each other now). I dont know, but yes it was a bit disturbing.

Episode 5 is tonight for me. I think its going to build the Jon Snow/Bran/Crasters story until the end of the series where its all going to kick off and probably have some white walkers involved

also, i keeping spotting cast members in other shit now.

No end game in sight. Actors will start dying if they're not careful. Dario looks like he works on the help desk.

YoungRemy

they need to worry about the author finishing the source material before he dies rather than the actors.

they have been recasting roles between seasons since the first season aired, it can become a bit confusing with all the multiple plotlines and characters and then they introduce a new actor and we have to piece together "oh that's the Hound's brother" or the new Daario as you mentioned

but if you were wondering if it means it's not any good, no, it doesn't mean that.

Daenerys' storyline is hot garbage to me, now.

At least something is finally happening in King's Landing, and Stannis is back around. Those developments, along with Theon, made this my most preferred episode in the season. And it's been a pretty average season outside of Joffrey getting it (which was super heavy handed).

It's important we criticise TV shows because ever since Breaking Bad finished, things like "Best show ever" have been thrown at nearly every other show. And that's no way to live.

Our subjective experience of things prevents us from truly understanding them. TV shows are big right now, but there are so many limitations to the format. And, TV is evil, too.

I have heard that next episode is on a par with the Red wedding episode. very excited. someone major is going to die methinks.
