Died down or not (and it really depends where you're looking - if it's here, then you're miles off), it remains that three white dudes on the wrong side of 40 who don't even have the capacity to utilise one of their core strenghs (touring) have made a solid case for the best hip-hop album of 2011. The same dudes whose own fans have variously shitted on their lyricism, production abilities and age in the game. The same dudes who have been the biggest group on Earth a couple of times already. Pretty impressive.
The buzz for the next one should be interesting.

I honestly consider this album to be one of the Beastie's best. I say "one of the best" because once you get to a certain point, they're all so good that they can't be rated above one another.
Saying that, I haven't seen any buzz over here about it except for my few friends who are casual listeners. I've looked in so many CD shops and have only seen it in one, at which point I promptly purchased it :P Mind you, this was a week or two after the release, so they had ample time... Also, the release in Ireland was supposedly April 28th, so I expected them to actually promote it here, seeing as it had a separate release date and all... Oh wells...

In this digital age I don't think radio matters anymore. Back in the day it did because it was all we really had to be able to get a first listen to new music. So despite the fact that I don't hear Beastie Boys on my radio all my friends who are not even in the fandom bought or downloaded the album and absolutely love it.
They did good with what they had meaning FFYR and the other cool promos they released. Without the band I think it was pretty successful and it really only makes people anticipate their come-back that much more. So yeah it's died down in a sense but I look at it as a tease and it's got people's attention so when they can come back together things will be back on track. :p

I think it's interesting that HSCP2 debuted at #1 on the iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap chart, fell when Wiz Khalifa's, Nicki Minaj's and the MMG albums were released in turn, but is back at #1 again. Maybe this viral/slow-burn approach is the way to go, and/or maybe the album's just that strong.
On another note, while I am glad Mike and Adam have for the most part been talking like adults in interviews, I can see how being so forthcoming can take away from the art's mystique.

There wasn't any real buzz over here in the UK, not a lot of people know that an album was ever released, let alone the Make Some Noise single.
I heard it maybe once on radio1 and that was it. Do you think the buzz will ramp up, or is that it until the next release.
Also you got to remember that the first single is always the one which gets promoted and shown on music channels. I have a feeling that Don't Play no Game will be kind of like blink and you'll miss it release and promotion. (y)

So what if the buzz has died down, and what does it matter if the album isn't earth shattering or gets played on the radio over and over again. It's a great album and if it was all fucked over with autotune or a whole new sound that wasn't related to what we know and love it wouldn't mean the same to me. I love that this album sounds a bit more like an older beastie sound, i love that sound. I can't wait to hear it played out live and when Yauch is well enough and dates are announced the buzz will come back if that's what people need. I didn't read through the first page of this thread yet so i may well be echoing what others have just said. And it didn't make it to the top 40...big deal, in my mind they're just not that commercial. Any shows will be sold out. If you want to listen to the same fluff repeatedly on commercial radio go and do it. I'm just really proud to be a beastie fan.

do you even hear the bullshit that "cracks" the top 40 these days?
it probably speaks more to the record that the top 40 zombies didn't eat it all up. I'll admit some good shit gets it's time in the sun on the charts (I'm not one of those stubborn radio cynics), but it's few and far between at this point, and it's hardly the measure of an album's quality anymore. hardly.
you couldn't even imagine the heat the beasties would have brought on themselves if they had seriously tried to fuck with that autotune fad. not only would they have lost some hard-earned respect, but they'd fulfill that "old guys trying to be hip" prophecy that so many people are so eager to pin on them.

OH MAN! lol The Beastie Boys make what THEY want. Why would they use autotune anyway? How does fake singing relate to Beastie Boys. I mean they have sung like twice in their songs before but do you really think they like autotune but are afraid to use it. Could be. We don't know that, but we do know that there is no pressure to have a certain sound or style in their music. Why should they experiment with autotune(Evil in it's most concentrated form) when they didn't decide to. Don't expect any of their shit to sound like anything. You can have your own ideas on what you'd prefer but you can't just say they "could have" as if it was somewhat an obligation.
"Everyone's doing it". You just committed a crime my friend. The point isn't to do what everyone else is doing or even the opposite of what everyone else is doing. The point is to do what YOU are doing regardless of what that may be. Say they really got into autotune and made a love album where they sing to random girls that don't exist when they already have wives than that would be their own thing. Even though it would seem like a bitch sell out move. That could just be what they like to make. The majority however just want to make money and be popular. That's why "everyone else is doing it".

Good thing about the Beasties is that they have already made a huge impact on the industry with consistent hits and so while it sucks they don’t get played on the radio they aren’t alone! There are a lot of great bands who have been around awhile and still sell out stadiums. The music industry in my opinion is a joke and so is the radio. It’s just like MTV marketing to the kids who usually are the ones who have time to sit around and request their favorite songs. BB’s will be fine!
Also we have to remember some fans are of different ages and have grown up around different music so I can see why some might think they should do auto-tune or whatever. Nothing wrong with them wanting to see a band they love get noticed or appreciated on the radio, but it wouldn’t work because Beasties are musicians. What I mean is that I think they wouldn’t have anything to work with. Most rap songs on the radio have these really simple club sounding beats. How could Mike, Adam and Adam work with crap like that? They would have finished the album in six months and already finished a tour if they produced mainstream music. The fact that they spend a lot of time making beats is why I fucking love them so much.
Give me layers layers layers, that is music.

This is my favourite thread in Beastie General for a long time, some really spot on comments and some mind-bogglingly stupid ones. Natasha Beddingfield...Akon, Chris Brown,etc...exactly the most bollocks music EVER that if the Beasties even slightly attempted to change their sound to emulate (for money ffs) then i'd walk away disgusted. Some of these opinions have got to be a joke.

yup.....you want a hit, you have to be current. if not, you dont get noticed. its as simple as that. either that or do something no one else is doing and create something new. the beasties were on the forefront for cutting edge music.
lol! someone tell me this guy is not serious!

lets state some facts:
the buzz died down.
no "blockbuster" hits or top 40 material.
the album was good, sounds a bit dated tho.
the album seems like it was for the fans.

lets state some facts:
the buzz died down. To be fair, there wasn't so much to be buzzing about in the first place, since, you know, one of the band members is still undergoing treatment for cancer. The band wanted to put the album out, so they put it out. Nothing more to say really.
no "blockbuster" hits or top 40 material. Hmm, probably a good thing, especially given your definitions of blockbuster material earlier. Not sure how you could flip this into a real negative, since the band is caking off hits from the 80s and 90s already.
the album was good, sounds a bit dated tho. Says the man who bought George Lamond into the discussion. Hilarious.
the album seems like it was for the fans. Yep. You can leave whenever you want.

exactly as what I said originally.

which proves my point.

George's fans arent complaining why his new music isnt on the radio nor why he isnt touring.

I never said I wasnt a fan, just have my eyes and ears adjusted to the world and not only to 1 group. Lady GaGa's latest album was more popular and her album is a bomb.
