View Full Version : 3rd Bass vs. Beasties - ironic bit of trivia. . .

so i thought this was sort of interesting and ironic, in light of the 3rd Bass vs. Beastie Boys beef of the early 90s: Nas appears on the latest Beasties album (no doubt a fun/cool collaboration, but also a not-so-subtle feather in the Beasties' hat in terms of hip-hop "cred").
for those that don't know (i certainly didn't until a couple days ago after doing a little research), MC Serch of 3rd Bass featured Nas on his own solo album in '92 (almost 20 years before HSCP2), got Nas his first record deal, and was executive producer on Nas' first album "Illmatic" (widely regarded as a stone cold hip-hop classic, launching Nas' career and status as on of the greatest MCs of all time).
did MC Serch get the last laugh?
Who's still releasing hit records in 2011?

Also, I heard Nas and Search had a falling out. Search did him wrong somewhere down the line. I'm not sure of the exact story but Nas ended up hating his guts.

Serch and Large Professor had a problem, Nas got stuck in the middle.
Both have mended fences a long ass time ago.

Slightly off topic but Serch guested on a recent Kurious track with MF DOOM called Benetton. Good song.

i'll never diss 3rd Bass...they were in thick back in the day...they battled with the best (and perhaps lost), they put on legends and they remain fathers of the art.

I don't mind them either. They put out some good stuff.

3rd Bass was a great group. Cactus album is a hip hop classic. To this day Steppin to the AM is the best non-Beastie Boys white boy hip hop record of all time.

Speaking of Pete Nice, I far prefer him to Serch in terms of MC'ing. I was too small to dig them when they were at their peak, but retro-active listening made me a far bigger Pete Nice fan than Serch fan.
Although I will say the suit and cane routine he did was mad corny. He could still spit, though. PLUS he's a huuuuge baseball fan and a true historian, and for that alone he gets mad respect in my book. He even wrote a few books about baseball, one of which was stellar.

i have no 3rd bass in the collection today...
i liked 3rd bass when I had them in the collection. but i sold their cd for like $2 one day... never sold a Beastie Boys cd
here is my math...
Vanilla Ice is is better than 3rd bass
Beastie Boys are better than Vinalla Ice
so Beastie Boys are better than 3rd Bass.....

I saw 3rd Bass when Pop Goes The Weasel was big. Show was under 30 minutes, but they did bring along cardboard standees of Hammer and Vanilla which they took down with Wiffle bats, so "good show".

I agree. I liked Pete Nice more. They both had dope skills in terms of word play and urban social commentary. Although they made a lot of mistakes in my opinion. Their presentation was corny as hell, Serch being the most annoying in videos. They were using tired cliches and trying way too hard. The Cactus Album did sound ill though. They obviously had a different complex style of mc'ing compared to the Beasties.
I feel the Beasties had different strengths as mc's, as in uniqueness, clever rhymes, stories, and humour. They were fun to listen to and made people laugh. The Beasties also were being who they were and not trying to be something they were not. In terms of stage presence, even to this day there are very few hiphop acts that can compete with the Beasties in live performance.
I saw in a recent interview Search saying one of his biggest mistakes was beefing with the Beasties. He respects them as sees them as good people who love hiphop and love music.

Holy shit!!
That is a huge statement considering that Vanilla Ice is widely regarded as a joke. You've got some balls. I respect your honesty. Bravo. (y)

No doubt, "homeboy".
What a pointless thread. Anyone who is a hip-hop fan knows this. Anyone who isn't doesn't care.

By the way, everybody who is hating on 3rd Bass in this thread (just because they beefed with the Beastie Boys 25 years ago and presumably wouldn't even have heard of them otherwise) is a pathetic sheep. You should all be ashamed.

go to a packed dance club today and play 3rd bass then play Vinalla Ice
what happens ... Ice Ice Baby packs the floor, 3rd Bass gets a few people out...
Finnally you can still break out Intergalatic and the place becomes standing room only...

I would like to just say that I am not one of those lame ass "fuck lil wayne. real hip hop!!! co-flow blahblahblah" people. but considering your statement, is ice ice baby a jam? sure it is, guilty pleasure or not. but the people getting down at a club to ice ice baby is not exactly the target crowd 3rd bass ever appealed to or tried appealing to.
3rd bass was good. its a shame people hate just cuz they had a silly misguided beef with the band. Its funny cuz when anyone says anything remotely dissing the band the boards come up with any type of defense for the band and I feel those silly defenses can be used for 3rd bass as well. but whatever I love both groups.

Haha, you're right on about the corny factor. When MCA likened Serch to Janet Jackson for doing those wack ass dances in all of the 3rd Bass videos he was right on the money.

Last time I saw MC Serch it was on some shitty VH1 show in search for rappers. I didnt know he had anything to do with iLLMATiC, which is kinda cool, but not even into the Beastie Boy realm by any means.

Wow, interesting take on it. I'd put 3rd Bass over Vanilla Ice any day, just in terms of raw ability & their true love for hip hop. Anyways, here's my take on the 3:
Vanilla Ice = Entertainer
3rd Bass = MC's
Beastie Boys = Musicians/Artists

^ Nail on the head. They're not really comparable.
3rd Bass = Pop goes the weasel
Beastie Boys = Pop your balloon
Vanilla Ice = Pop music

Ok....I read this thread and got a little sucked in. I was not going to post but here goes.....(I'll keep it brief). The Cactus Album is arguably one of the best rap albums of it's time I stress it's time because, not until Palu's Boutique had we ever heard sampling to that degree. Yeah, I know about the whole dis match between the two bands. And I must say that "Sons of Third Bass" the opening track on "...Cactus" was brilliant! And I'm a true die hard Beastie Fan! I'm 40 years old and was there from the start. Have seen countless shows, slapped hands with them on stage and met them backstage (1993). Anyway, Search has given it up to the Beastie's long ago. He said in an interview that had he know how cool they were, he would have never said those things. Don't get wrong MCA's comeback on Professor Booty was very good. The Cactus album remains and always will remain in my collection because it's just a good record and fun to listen to. it's diverse and way ahead of it's time. So regardless of your favorites good music is still good music. Peace, I got a million ideas that I ain't even rocked yet.
