I bot it the day it came out. I was a porter at a Belk Hudson's. Porter is a $50 word for a delivery boy. I drove to the record store across town on my lunch break and dropped acid on the way
I listened to the first side on the ride back...About 30 minutes.
I clocked back in and clocked out 2 hours later. Peaking. Little did I know I'd be in for the treat when I put the key in the ignition to be sound blasted with 5 Piece Chicken Dinner then Looking Down the Barrel and Oh My Goddd!!! Car Thief! Best Trip Ever!
Went to my trip buddies house and we put his speaker out in the hall and I remember Shadrach! He wasn't down but my drunk bud was as we watched boxing.
Dope Time! I'll Never Forget It!

I feel like the Mayor of Idiotsville for reminiscing about shit that had nothing to do with this interview that I hold in high regard.
Thank you for putting this up
The interviewer was somewhat of a cnut but the B-Boys Preservered: I Was Entertained, Thoroughly Amused, and Intrigued. Good Jorb.
Mike D was obviously the spokesman for the group at that time. I did like how Ad yawned at the boring questions when the interviewer tried to get controversial.
Where the hell was this is in '89? All I remember in '89 was an almost disappointed, definitely confused, Ed & Dr. Dre looking like WTF after premiering "Hey Ladies"
Months later Fab5 showed the same ill contempt before playing the "Looking Down the Barrel" video on a Saturday Yo.
This is the history I remember of my favorite BBoy LP.

I'd love to see that video bc as I remember I was at my buds house in the early summer '89 and we saw the premier to "Hey Ladies" and we and Ed Lover/Dr. Dre were like WTF after the video.
I don't want to be a lunatic type Michele Bachmann history revisionist.
I earned my lunatic stripes long before her and for much more colorful reasons.(lb)

I like how the Capitol president acknowledges the album's legitimacy by saying that MC Hammer gives his approval.
What a crazy afternoon. Paul's Boutique is an initial flop and a couple years later MC Hammer blows up and shows the world what "real" hip-hop is.

I was laughing so hard when they said that! this video is great...man the Beasties were so lit during the interview...can barely focus their attention! "Who do you want to go on tour with?" Adrock: "Engelbert Humperdinck." (y)

Great clip.
My favorite part was when they were handed the album and Yauch unfolded it and the interviewer chick was like "hold it out so the viewers can see it." and he doesn't then she says "no one at home can see it" and then Yauch says "yeah. I'm just going out on a selfish tip this afternoon." and he still doesn't hold it up. LOL

I am still shocked that this album flopped. It's rare for an album with so much promotion to do as poor as this one did. With music, people will typically buy what ever is shoved down their throat. And for it to be so well received critically makes it even more puzzling.

Ad- Rock couldn't stay still through an interview if his life depended on it! He was hilarious. Some of it sounds like inside jokes when they laugh about certain things. I freakin love that. :o

In the long term I don't think it can be considered a flop, its more then got its just deserts, will stay at the top of fans and critics charts for a very long time, much longer then practically any other rap album, and its initial lack of success only adds to the legacy.

Agreed. It's funny that the suit called it the sgt. Pepper of hip hop...hit it right on the head before it was even released.

I think Paul’s Boutique was way way head of it’s time and I think that’s why folks were a little taken back by it. I don’t think they really understood the change and transition the Beasties were making as a band, and that they were redefining music until much later. I was too young at the time but that’s just my theory.

music show "rapido" with a french presenter from 1989(they did one in 92 as well).
very cool show with Antoine De Caunes, Titles by Jean Baptiste Mondino
http://youtu.be/RDX7ecKp-vM
can't find the Beasties interview though
One of the greatest opening credits for a TV show was the very creative and ground-breaking one for the music programme "Rapido" that ran from 1988 to 1992 on French channel Canal+ and UK channel BBC2 (among others). The weekly, half-an-hour show was hosted by Antoine de Caunes and featured reports from up and coming new bands linked together with Antoine's dry wit (and a purposefully very strong French accent for the English-speaking viewers!).
